Captain – Chapter 231 – The Way Out

“Morton Prison.”

Without any hesitation, Berney revealed the final destination, then licked his dry lips and added: “In his letter, the lord instructed me to take you there. During this process, this information would reach Young Master Howard and Governor Naren through some more secretive… channels.”

Though she had already guessed it, when she heard that the carriage was indeed heading toward that hellish prison, Roy’s pupils still involuntarily contracted, her blood seemingly frozen in an instant.

But in the next moment, surging anger transformed into magma, breaking through the dark, lightless ice. The young woman’s body suddenly tensed, her dark golden pupils gleaming brightly in the reflection of the oil lamp, radiating a terrifying glow like that of a fierce beast.

After a long while, the Captain finally relaxed again.

She opened a bottle of black rum, tilted her head back and gulped down several mouthfuls. After taking a few rapid breaths, the flames ignited in her heart were completely extinguished.

“You should be grateful, Colonel. If one day, upon stepping down from the carriage, what met my eyes was that infernal place, I would definitely kill you… this Captain keeps her word.”

Feeling the somewhat cloying sweetness of the alcohol, Roy paused momentarily and said expressionlessly.

The Captain’s declaration, or rather threat, dropped the atmosphere to freezing point. Apart from the still intense thunder and rain, there were no other sounds in the small tavern.

After a long silence, Berney, as if trying to break the impasse, pretended to casually take a sip of wine, then smiled unnaturally and said: “So it seems I made the right choice?”

“Perhaps.”

Roy responded flatly, then stared at the man before her for a long time before asking somewhat puzzledly: “I’m curious, Colonel Berney. If I’m not mistaken, someone like you should value your life greatly. If so, why insist on wading into these troubled waters?”

Ten years ago, Berney was just a young man not yet twenty, yet he already held the position of warden at Morton Prison. This was obviously not due to his own abilities; after all, from all perspectives, he didn’t seem like the type skilled in managing criminals or knowledgeable about torture instruments.

Even when branding her with the seal back then, the young man had trembled more violently than she had.

If that was the case, it could only be explained by his family background, and judging from the Colonel’s wastrel demeanor, Roy could easily draw a conclusion—he came from a noble family that, while not illustrious, was at least not in decline.

Logically speaking, such a nobleman’s son raised in a greenhouse should not have the courage to participate in treasonous affairs.

“It’s not that I wanted to wade in; it’s that by the time I realized, there was no way out for me.”

Hearing the young woman’s question, the Colonel said bitterly: “When the Governor’s secret letter was presented to me, I simply didn’t have the courage to refuse. Earlier I said I wanted to deviate from his will, but the truth is, now I don’t even have the courage to face him, let alone betray him.”

“So… you never actually planned to cooperate with me?”

Hearing this, Roy raised her eyebrows slightly, her tone quite dissatisfied.

“Yes, I just wanted to save my own life, and see if I could rely on you to show my value to the Governor again.”

The Captain’s question seemed to thoroughly trigger the fear and anxiety in the young man’s heart, making him blurt out his difficulties and plans all at once, as if facing a lifeline.

After speaking, he seemed drained of all energy, leaning against the chair back like an empty puppet, waiting for the final judgment of fate.

“Why?”

But even after waiting for a long time, he didn’t receive any outburst from the pirate captain, not even some harsh words—only a question with no discernible emotion.

“What?” Berney asked bewilderedly.

“I mean, why did you change your mind again and decide to tell me all this?”

Hearing the young woman’s somewhat impatient words, the Colonel was silent for a moment, then explained: “You said that when you see that prison, you would definitely kill me. I thought perhaps your reaction is exactly what the lord is expecting to see, or rather, what he has orchestrated.”

“If so, haven’t I already been abandoned?”

Hearing this, Roy let out a light “hmm” of surprise, and said with some amazement: “To be able to consider this far, your mind is indeed not bad. But why can’t I see it at all in your usual behavior?”

Seeing the Colonel’s face twitch slightly, the Captain smiled mischievously, as if she had successfully played a prank: “You guessed correctly, Colonel. You’ve been abandoned, completely and utterly abandoned. Regardless of whether this conspiracy succeeds or not, your fate has already been determined, and that is to become a pitiful sacrifice.”

“That man dressed like a servant earlier is Robert’s confidant. The reason he put shackles on me and hid the key among you and your subordinates was to make me kill all of you.”

Observing the young man’s wooden expression, Roy lowered her voice and asked: “Besides that, do you know what else he said?”

“What?” Berney’s voice was somewhat hoarse.

“In order to make me change my mind, that Governor who strongly supported you is willing to place your fate in my hands, no longer concerning himself with your life or death.”

Like a devil’s whisper, the Captain described the desperate situation the other was in with utmost detail: “Furthermore, as you said, he’s sending me to Morton Prison to drive me insane. But even if I restrain my impulses, do you think you’ll escape calamity?”

“No, he’s also forcing our Young Master Howard to go mad, forcing my crew to go mad, forcing them to tear off their disguise and use the most direct and violent means to rescue me.”

“Of course, Governor Naren won’t stand by watching his child plunge into a sea of fire. So before my First Mate goes mad, he will use the strongest means to counterattack, and you… will naturally become the first sacrifice to his anger.”

Clapping her hands, awakening the Colonel from various terrifying visions, the Captain smiled and said: “So, you see, it seems you have no way out, Colonel.”

Hearing these words, Berney not only didn’t show an expression of despair but his eyes began to flicker intensely. He looked at the young woman’s fair face and said in a slightly hoarse voice: “Captain Roy, you’ve told me so much, it shouldn’t just be for revenge, right?”

“Correct. Everything I’ve said is based on the premise that the situation is irreversible. But in reality, you do still have a way out, and that is… your only path to survival.”

Raising her hand slightly to the Colonel, Roy’s smile disappeared as she said calmly: “As for whether you can grasp it, that depends on how the Colonel chooses.”

Pursing his lips, the Colonel asked solemnly: “What do you want me to do?”

“You don’t need to do anything. Everything remains as is.”

The Captain lazily stretched, then nodded her chin at the young man, a hint of indifferent smile appearing at the corner of her mouth: “You just need to tell me one thing, and that is…”

“Where is Robert now?”
