Captain – Chapter 268 – The True Purpose
Captain – Chapter 268 – The True Purpose
“Are you really so certain, Uncle Robert?”
Seeing that the Governor had seen through her thoughts, Roy’s face instead took on a smile. She asked softly: “Or rather, regardless of whether I had such intentions or not, you would definitely have stopped me anyway?”
“Is it because you’re reluctant to lose your sunk costs in me, or is it anger from having your mask removed and lies exposed, or perhaps… you foresaw this situation and never intended to let me leave from the very beginning?”
Walking a few steps closer to Robert, observing his noncommittal expression, the Captain sighed rather regretfully: “Whatever the reason, I am extremely disappointed in you, utterly disappointed.”
Hearing this, the man seemed no longer willing to continue the charade with the young woman. He laughed coldly and asked mockingly: “Child, this is clearly a situation you created with your own hands, yet now you blame me?”
“Moreover, isn’t finding an opportunity to vent your hatred and anger exactly what you wanted?”
“I suppose so,” Roy nodded slightly in agreement, then asked rather perplexedly: “But what I don’t understand is, why would you give me such an opportunity? This… opportunity I don’t truly want.”
“I don’t believe you couldn’t see through my probing, and you clearly had chances to prevent all this from happening, but in the end, why did you still choose to shatter that already crack-filled thin ice between us?”
“Could it be that you so desperately want to expose those ugly, embarrassing truths to the light of day?”
As if hearing a joke, the Governor laughed silently: “Prevent? Child, since you entered, you’ve shown no intention of reconciling with me. Even the facts I stated were probably just laughable lies in your eyes, weren’t they?”

“Even though I told you the truth, offered my apologies, and was willing to do everything in my power to make it up to you, you never considered making peace with me. Did you give me a chance to prevent this then?”
“Later, you even used my feelings for you as leverage, trying to make me give up the power I hold and the pursuit of my lifetime with just a few words.”
“You knew perfectly well this was impossible, yet you still did it. Did you give me a chance to prevent this then?”
Robert’s tone grew stronger, like an oncoming storm threatening to sink the young woman like a lone raft into the depths of the sea.
“None at all.”
Finally, the man’s voice dropped again, saying words that cut to the heart: “If that’s the case, wasn’t this scene predetermined from the moment of our reunion? So child, what right do you have to question me now?”
“You’re right.”
Faced with such questioning, all based on irrefutable facts—which would have left anyone of ordinary resolve speechless or even ashamed—the young woman simply smiled wickedly and honestly admitted it.
“In these respects, I truly never gave you the slightest chance, but you cannot deny that methods to prevent this did exist.”

At this point, Roy sighed deeply: “Uncle Robert, with your caution and suspicion, now that you fully understand my intentions, I imagine you’ve dismissed everything I said earlier as lies, but I want to tell you…”
“Apart from some intentional and unintentional misdirection, there was only one lie among them.”
Hearing this, the Governor’s eyebrows rose involuntarily, somewhat surprised while also developing some interest in what that lie might be.
But to the man’s disappointment, the Captain didn’t immediately point out which statement was false, instead continuing on her own: “Besides that, whether it was the intelligence I gave you, the feelings I expressed to you, that ridiculous persuasion in your view, or my final request—all were as genuine as could be.”
After speaking, Roy stepped toward the thoughtful man, as if wanting to see his face more clearly and share her thoughts up close. But before she could take more than a few steps, a cold warning came from the Lieutenant Colonel behind her.
“Miss, if you take a few more steps forward, I will shoot.”
Glancing at the officer who had drawn his pistol and was slowly pointing it at her, the Captain’s eye twitched as she spread her hands and said: “Don’t be so tense, I mean no harm, at least not now.”
“Besides, the defensive forces around the Governor are as solid as a fortress. How could a weak young lady like me possibly find any opening?”
Looking at the soldiers standing up on the platform above the floor-to-ceiling window, and at those servants standing guard around Robert who remained expressionless with lowered heads after hearing the gun threat, Roy’s face showed a mixture of grievance and helplessness.

Yet that expression, which should have evoked sympathy, appearing on that exquisitely beautiful face, only made people feel… a strange sort of irritation, as if she were using this show of weakness to mock something.
Turning her attention back to the silent man, the young woman put aside her insincere expression and said seriously: “So you see, I truly had your best interests at heart when I hoped you would set aside these external matters and return to being a leisurely nobleman. That way, we might still have a chance to meet again in the future.”
“Perhaps even decades from now, when you’re in your twilight years, I might have truly let go of the past and be willing to come accompany you, care for you through your final days, just like a real child would.”
Seeing the slight impatience on the Governor’s face, Roy coughed lightly and somewhat awkwardly changed her tone: “Of course, that’s all impossible now, isn’t it? As for the opportunity I mentioned earlier…”
“You could have simply not spoken. That way, I could have taken your silence as acceptance of my request, as if our matters had been peacefully resolved, because at least it would prove that you still had some feelings for me, that you truly loved me.”
“But unfortunately, now it seems…”
“Enough.”
Seeing that the Captain seemed intent on endlessly derailing the topic, Robert finally couldn’t bear it anymore. He coldly interrupted: “I’ve heard enough of your complaints, child. Why don’t we talk about that lie you mentioned earlier—which statement was it exactly?”
“That way, I might still be in the mood to chat with you a while longer. Otherwise…”

“Bang.”
Imitating the sound of a gunshot, Roy chuckled and said: “My head would bloom like a flower, right, Uncle Robert? No, I should call you Governor now, because I think you probably don’t want to acknowledge me as your child anymore, do you?”
Seeing the man’s face growing increasingly dark, almost as if covered by a heavy layer of storm clouds, the Captain quickly gestured with her hand and smiled apologetically: “Alright, alright, no more jokes. I’ll tell you right away which statement was the lie.”
No one noticed that as the young woman pressed her hand, her left hand made an extremely subtle gesture.
This was meant for Cold Raven, which was perched on the small window of the floor-to-ceiling window behind Robert. The reason she had walked forward those few steps was to let the little one see more clearly.
Catching a glimpse of the black shadow disappearing from the windowsill, Roy secretly breathed a sigh of relief, and the smile on her face grew brighter.
She stared at the Governor, whose expression had slightly softened, and said in a tone devoid of any threatening intent: “The only thing I lied to you about was the true purpose of my visit.”
“I did indeed come to see you, but not to hear your explanation, nor to make that impossible persuasion, but to…”
“Take your life.”
