Captain – Chapter 269 – The Raven’s Call Like Evening Bells

The hall fell completely silent.

No one expected that, under the current circumstances, the young woman would still be able to speak such words without changing her expression.

Faced with this declaration that clashed so starkly with her light tone, even someone as composed as the Governor was momentarily stunned. Even after regaining his composure, he still asked somewhat uncertainly: “What did you say?”

Roy smiled as she explained: “Simply put, I came here to assassinate you, Governor.”

Hearing this, the man finally awoke as if from a dream. He coldly asked: “Are you sure you’re not joking, child?”

The Captain tilted her head slightly and said: “Governor, I am an adult now. I believe… I can take responsibility for my own words, can’t I?”

After being repeatedly provoked, Robert took a deep breath, suppressing the rage and killing intent in his heart, and asked expressionlessly: “Are you trying to provoke me, child? That is very dangerous and unwise in your current situation.”

“No, I’m merely stating a fact.”

Roy spread her hands, her face full of helplessness: “Didn’t you want to know earlier which statement of mine was false? I’ve told you now, but why do you seem so unsatisfied?”

Raising her hand to stop the man from speaking, the Captain’s expression of helplessness quickly vanished, replaced by a mocking smile: “I know what you want to ask, what you want to persuade me of. Perhaps you still think that even if our emotional ties are broken, there might still be a possibility for cooperation between us…”

“Based on the power you hold, based on what you believe you’ve grasped, the leverage you think will make me hesitate.”

Her form of address suddenly changed, and Roy’s words became sharp and forceful. She laughed coldly: “But I tell you, that’s absolutely impossible.”

“Since negotiations have failed, regardless of what you think, this Captain has never had the habit of letting enemies go.”

With his last hopes shattered and his patience exhausted, the Governor laughed from extreme anger. Using a contemptuous yet composed tone, he slowly asked: “Then I want to ask, in this desperate situation, surrounded by enemies, what can you rely on to kill me…”

“Yourself, Elizabeth?”

“Exactly right.”

The Captain snapped her fingers, smiling in response.

Then, under the watchful eyes of countless alert gazes, the young woman placed her left hand behind her back, elegantly moved her right hand in a circle before placing it in front of her left chest, and then slightly bent forward, performing a standard gentleman’s bow.

“By the greatest in this world…”

After completing the bow, Roy slightly raised her head, her dark golden eyes gleaming brilliantly, her soft recitation like a devil’s whisper.

“Captain Elizabeth Roy.”

As if responding to the Golden-Eyed Devil’s murmur, brilliant lightning flashed in the next moment, shining through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating everything in the hall with a snow-white clarity, revealing every detail.

Amid the thunderous roar that followed and the increasingly rapid sounds of rain, sharp raven cries tore through the sky, lingering without dispersing, like one toll after another of evening bells, striking the hearts of everyone present.

Soon after the raven’s cry, countless muffled yet powerful booms arose, followed immediately by a series of rapidly approaching, shrill and terrifying whistling sounds through the air!

Everything happened so quickly, so unexpectedly, that when the Lieutenant Colonel was the first to react, he had no opportunity to give warning, nor time to pull the trigger.

Under the cover of night, black cannonballs easily destroyed the vulnerable low wall behind the residence, then poured down like rapid raindrops onto this building that could be called a work of art.

Pale yellow walls collapsed one after another, azure roofs caved in section by section. The entire building shook violently, as if it might topple over at any moment, burying all its beauty and luxury.

Although cannonballs flew into the main hall as well, thanks to the support of marble pillars and the compression-resistant structure, the hall did not vanish in this round of artillery fire, maintaining relative integrity.

Cannonballs shattered the floor-to-ceiling windows, scattering sharp glass fragments everywhere, then triggered violent explosions throughout the hall.

Countless crystal chandeliers were extinguished by the violent tremors, some even breaking at their connection points and plummeting straight down. The warm light that had illuminated the hall as bright as day completely dimmed, until finally, the entire hall fell into heavy darkness.

Chaos spread unrestrained in the darkness.

The sharp sound of shattering glass, the howling of wind and rain pouring in, the agonized screams of soldiers hit by cannonballs or caught in explosions, the frantic roars of officers, and the disorderly gunfire—all sounds mixed together, making it impossible to discern the situation.

“Boom!”

A sudden loud noise came from behind. After holding out for so long, the platform above the floor-to-ceiling windows finally gave way, collapsing and falling.

Those specially selected soldiers with godlike marksmanship were either injured in the fall, or worse, directly buried under the bricks and stones, never to make another sound.

Breathing heavily, Robert forced himself to calm down, trying to assess the situation around him while stepping backward until he knocked over the round table covered with debris, barely stopping his retreat.

After a brief observation, he saw several servants who were rapidly approaching him, risking being hit by falling stones. He finally breathed a slight sigh of relief, seeing that these assassins left by Tomb Bat to protect his safety had not all perished in the explosion.

But shortly after the Governor’s sense of security returned, he suddenly remembered the young woman, recalled those dark golden eyes that had stared at him like a fierce tiger before the artillery fire began, and his heart, which had just calmed somewhat, accelerated again.

Where was she? Had she already escaped in the chaos, or was she still in this hall, hidden in the darkness seeking an opportunity, or perhaps…

Already in front of him?

Countless thoughts flashed through his mind as Robert struggled to stand straight in the shaking environment. His gaze swept across the chaotic hall, searching for the young woman’s figure by the light of the fires started by fallen crystal chandeliers and the brief flashes of explosions.

But no matter how he searched, he could not find her.

Thinking that her earlier words were merely threats and that she had already escaped under the cover of artillery fire, the man’s gaze flickered slightly. While somewhat disappointed, he also felt as if a huge stone had been lifted from his heart.

Perhaps unwilling to admit it, or perhaps even the Governor himself hadn’t realized, but the scene of Roy bowing and announcing her identity had made such a powerful impact on him, making him truly understand the significance of the Golden-Eyed Devil.

Robert steadied his breathing, contemplating how this storm that would sweep across the entire Empire should begin and end, given the current situation.

But before he could reach any conclusion, just like when the great show began earlier, another lightning bolt tore through the rainy night, illuminating the tragic scene in the hall, and completely shattering the calm and relief in his heart.

At the blood-stained front door where flames were rising, stood the young woman with slightly disheveled hair and some blood on her face, quietly. Around her lay several cold corpses.

Robert even recognized the person she was stepping on, who was trembling as he tried to pull out the curved knife from his chest—it was the Lieutenant Colonel who had threatened her earlier.

As if hearing the grating sound of the blade piercing skin, the Governor watched as the young woman pulled out the curved knife and then deftly thrust it into the officer’s throat, ending his life completely.

His pupils contracted involuntarily, and the Governor’s face turned somewhat pale, because after dispatching the Lieutenant Colonel, the young woman slowly turned her head, casting her emotionless gaze upon him.

Then, she drew the short pistol from her waist and pointed it at him from a distance.

There was no negotiation, nor the slightest hesitation. Just as Robert’s lips trembled, about to say something, the muzzle of that pistol—which he had once called a weapon forged for generals—suddenly blossomed with exquisite fire.

It was a silent declaration, and more so, a determination to sever the past.
