Captain – Chapter 30 – Scorpion Lion

The terrified expression on the lieutenant’s face was only exposed in the moonlight for an instant before being shrouded by the dark veil again. He staggered forward, extending his other uninjured hand, trying to pick up the silver knife that was just within reach.

But before he could bend down, Roy had already gripped his outstretched wrist with her bleeding hand while raising her left hand to protect her eyes.

With a “puff” sound.

In an instant, a small black dagger pierced through her palm, thrusting directly toward the captain’s dark golden pupils. Due to the dagger’s insufficient length and the obstruction, this lethal dark blade finally stopped half an inch from Roy’s eyes, unable to proceed further.

This almost negligible distance became the dividing line between heaven and hell.

Roy gave the lieutenant no more chance to resist. She cleanly and efficiently crushed the wrist she was holding, while simultaneously delivering a powerful kick to his abdomen, forcefully sending this sturdy military man flying several meters away. He crashed heavily onto the hard stone surface outside the attic, unable to get up again.

“The Great Captain once told me, the rats that crawl out of that hole are all a bunch of emotionless freaks. They absolutely cannot have feelings like fear or compassion. If they appear to, it must be an act.”

Roy expressionlessly pulled out the black dagger that had pierced her palm, seemingly feeling not the slightest pain. She walked toward the lieutenant who was still struggling but couldn’t stand up. Each of her steps seemed to fall on the beat of a funeral dirge, eerie and terrifying.

“No scent. Are you an assassin of the Black Raven Society?”

Hearing those footsteps that seemed to knock against his heart, hearing the devil-like murmuring inquiry, the lieutenant finally stopped struggling. He slightly raised his head to see the increasingly approaching figure, breathing with difficulty: “Who… exactly are you?”

Anyone who could be associated with the Great Captain, who was like a towering mountain, must not be an ordinary person. This was the warning written at the very top of the Black Raven Society executioners’ guidelines.

In the founder of the Black Raven Society’s view, if the Great Captain of the Southern Islands ever developed a desire for power and territory, he would surely be an even more terrifying powerful ruler than the Imperial Emperor.

Ignoring the lieutenant’s inquiry, Roy continued her speculation: “No, that’s not right. You’re not an assassin. If you were one of those killing machines who like to coat their daggers with poison, I wouldn’t be standing here talking to you now. Moreover, how could an assassin do well as a military mole?”

“Am I right, Mr. Executioner?”

Seeing the young woman standing beside him, no longer needing to strain his neck to look up, the lieutenant’s head fell limply back onto the ground. A faint smile with indiscernible emotion appeared on his face: “Guessed correctly. It seems you, madam, are very familiar with our Black Raven Society.”

“Of course, after all, when dealing with dangerous rats like you, no amount of precaution is excessive.” Roy knelt on one knee beside the lieutenant, bending down to look at that pale face that was continuously dripping with sweat due to pain, and said in a low voice: “So, may I ask your code name?”

Although the Black Raven Society was a relatively loose organization, its class differentiation was as rigorous and detailed as the Auran Empire. Apart from external allies as hired guests, the Black Raven Society had a total of four ranks: scout, assassin, executioner, and elder.

Scouts and assassins, as the names suggest, served as the eyes and blades of this massive organization, monitoring or eliminating enemies designated by the organization.

Executioners were considered the true power tier of the Black Raven Society. To obtain this rank, one had to possess extreme ability in some aspect. To this day, the Black Raven Society had only eight executioners, and they were all given code names by that mysterious founder that closely resembled their abilities.

The lieutenant before her had admitted his identity as an executioner, so naturally, he also had his code name. Therefore, Roy was very curious to know which great figure of the Black Raven Society this executioner was—the one who had planned tonight’s assassination attempt but accidentally fell into her hands.

“Scorpion Lion,” the lieutenant said calmly, without any intention of concealment.

Upon hearing this, Roy’s eyes narrowed slightly. It seemed the other party also understood the current situation clearly. Having already fallen into her hands, in this fortress surrounded by soldiers, he absolutely had no possibility of escaping alive.

What she hadn’t expected was that this lieutenant before her was actually the third-ranked executioner among the Black Raven Society’s executioners—the Scorpion Lion.

Scorpion Lion was a creature from mythology, possessing simultaneously the stealth of a bat, the venomousness of a scorpion, and the mighty strength of a lion. It aptly described this lieutenant’s patience, endurance, and combat ability far surpassing ordinary soldiers as he lurked within the military.

Being able to stab a lethal dagger with a hand whose bones had been broken, one could imagine what kind of willpower this lieutenant possessed.

If she hadn’t been by Caine’s side, such a deadly figure could indeed have easily killed the officer who lacked combat prowess, and then safely retreated under the cover of darkness. But unfortunately…

“I must admit, in terms of timing and method of attack, you indeed calculated to perfection. If it hadn’t been me here today, your plan might truly have been deemed perfect,” Roy said with her head slightly lowered, her words without the slightest ripple.

“Yet I still have a question. Even with such a flawless plan, according to the mindset of you executioners, you would absolutely not personally undertake the action. So why, why did you risk exposing your identity to personally come and kill us?”

“Actually, it’s very simple. Because if the organization’s assassins took action, it would definitely alarm the imperial military. But I’m different. I… no, Lieutenant Lester has an excellent excuse for betrayal, because he himself… is a person from the Federation,” the lieutenant coughed a few times and said lightly, as if the person in his words wasn’t himself.

“I see. Thank you for satisfying my curiosity.”

Roy didn’t ask anything more, because she knew this person wouldn’t reveal any more secrets, and those previous words were just some irrelevant past events.

In the past, there was a soldier named Lester on Frans Island. He was a spy who had infiltrated the imperial military through countless resources and relationships mobilized by the Federation, having passed rigorous examinations. He had originally thought he could report confidential information about Auran back to the Federation, but unexpectedly, he himself became a lamb in the eyes of a third party first.

So after a switcheroo, that spy from the Federation disappeared, replaced by a Black Raven Society executioner named Scorpion Lion.

In decades of military service, Scorpion Lion successfully rose to the position of lieutenant, becoming the Black Raven Society’s most lethal Damocles sword within the imperial military.

No one knew how many top-secret military reports this executioner had transmitted to the Black Raven Society during that long period, or what kind of impact it had caused to the empire. Perhaps the fire that occurred on Frans Island more than a decade ago was by his hand.

Understanding all this, Roy raised the dagger in her hand and thrust it straight toward the lieutenant’s chest, but stopped midway due to a call.

“Wait, Captain.”
