Captain – Chapter 304 – An Unsolvable Question
Captain – Chapter 304 – An Unsolvable Question
Roy quietly observed the scholar, as if trying to detect any guilt or ill intentions on his face.
But even in the end, all she could see was deep emotion and genuine sorrow, as if he were silently mourning those beautiful creatures.
“Captain.”
After some time, Bivis finally withdrew his gaze and looked at the young woman earnestly: “You must understand one thing: Captain Edward was not a good person, in any sense of the word.”
“Everything he did, whether great or despicable, was based solely on his own likes and dislikes, stemming from his deepest desires.”
Hearing this, the captain murmured dreamily: “Desires?”
“Yes, boundless desires.”
Bivis knew this was a crucial moment. A glimmer of hope appeared in his eyes as he began listing the various pursuits that corresponded to the Pirate King’s actions.
“He gathered pirates and established the Southern Islands to gain power. He plundered wealth to erect a monument to himself that millions would admire and fear.”
“He met with the Lady and made a deal with her to obtain divine assistance, to sweep away the imperial navy and defeat Auran. This too had the flavor of power and money, but it wasn’t his true purpose. What he really wanted was to obtain that magical box.”

“After obtaining the box, using the pretext of eliminating the threat of deities, he persuaded other equally great individuals to join him in stripping away the Lady’s power and sealing it inside, before burying it on Satin Island, where sunlight would never reach.”
“But the truth was far from this.”
Bivis stepped forward, closing the distance between himself and the captain, speaking gravely: “The box was supposedly for sealing the Lady’s power, but in reality, it was merely his medium for stealing these powers. In darkness, unseen by anyone, Edward bathed in magical energy day and night, gradually transforming into…”
“A non-human devil.”
Hearing this, Roy’s dark golden eyes brightened slightly, as if understanding something.
If what the scholar said was true, then the devil’s ability to stir the sea with a wave of his hand and destroy the Auran Navy’s First Fleet came from the power of the box?
“Yes, while his power originated from the box, it had been transformed and no longer remained under the Lady’s control.”
Guessing Roy’s thoughts, Bivis nodded slightly and continued: “Over decades, using methods unknown, he separated the box’s power thread by thread, claiming it for himself. Eventually, even the Lady could no longer control these powers.”
“But there are no secrets that can remain hidden forever. Even deeply concealed in shadow, the truth was eventually discovered by people—by his former supporters, by… those he trusted most.”

At this point, the scholar’s tone became much lower.
He hadn’t personally witnessed everything that happened afterward, but recalling the scenes described by others, his heart still trembled involuntarily, producing a bone-chilling coldness.
Bivis’s voice faded, and the captain, who had been listening with great interest, frowned slightly in dissatisfaction and urged quietly: “And then?”
After a deep sigh, the scholar’s flat voice finally gained a touch of coldness: “By then, it had been decades since that war, that deception. Edward had already mastered most of the box’s great powers, becoming the person closest to godhood in the world.”
“So even though his actions completely contradicted his previously glorious goals, no one dared question anything. They simply distanced themselves from him. Only his most loyal crew remained, continuing to follow him as he sailed the seas.”
“During that period, he no longer concerned himself with worldly affairs, only searching for traces of the Lady, wanting to eliminate any future trouble. Meanwhile, fearing the loss of everything he had gained, he made many arrangements and committed unspeakable crimes.”
“The Acherousian Lighthouse was one such arrangement, as was the extinction of the siren race. Perhaps because of these actions, or perhaps influenced by the powers he possessed, his temperament became increasingly bizarre—unpredictable, dismissive of life, increasingly inhuman.”
“Thus he earned that title, becoming known as the most terrifying devil.”
Only now did Roy understand that the scholar had been calling Edward a devil not because of the undead state she had described, but because of this history.

“The story that follows lacks originality. As Captain Edward once said, the existence of an uncontrolled deity with extraordinary powers is a threat to everyone living in the world—a threat that must be eliminated.”
“Then came another series of old tales—cooperation, deals, betrayal—except this time, those great captains stood beside the Lady, joining her in placing curses and shackles upon that devil, sealing him forever on that nameless island.”
That must be what people called Devil’s Island.
Roy thought silently, then noticed the intense, sorrowful mockery on the scholar’s face, unsure whether it was directed at those stories or those people.
“As I said before, I have no evidence.”
After a long silence, Bivis spoke earnestly: “Also, I’m not hoping for you to help Lady Annisdora, because the devil was actually right—such mysterious, unknown existences with unimaginable powers are best kept away from the world, the further the better.”
Just like those departed gods.
Bivis thought privately, observing the slight bewilderment on the young woman’s face, and explained: “I only hope you remain vigilant against him. And if there’s any possibility of killing him, please don’t hesitate, for that would be the greatest gift to this world.”
“Bivis, you once said that Captain Edward made that oath with me to find release, and the only path to release was death… true death. Then why should I deviate from his wishes? Wouldn’t following through be exactly right?”

Roy didn’t agree, and after saying this, she simply watched the scholar quietly.
His story was astonishing, those secrets fascinating, but his words somewhat contradicted what he had said before.
For instance, Captain Edward didn’t become an immortal being because of the Lady’s curse—he was already a true devil before being sealed.
And the sealing of that devil wasn’t accomplished by the Lady’s power alone, but by her joining forces with those great captains.
And if they no longer supported the devil, what about those ghost fleets outside Devil’s Island? Surely the Lady hadn’t betrayed her allies?
There were many similar questions, such as Bivis’s mysterious identity that she had long suspected, or how he knew those stories that happened after he was cursed and trapped on the Victoria, unable to leave.
Who told you these things? The Lady?
Roy narrowed her eyes slightly. Her previous question was actually meant to make him provide all the answers. If he couldn’t even do that, then regardless of whether he had evidence or not…
She wouldn’t believe a single word he said.
