Captain – Chapter 462 – A Dream Intertwined with Truth and Falsehood

“Is this an illusion, or a day you’ve extracted from the past?”

The ancestor-descendant pair walked on the quiet streets, the sound of their footsteps breaking through puddles rang clear. As they moved away from the pasture filled with countless sorrows, their question-and-answer naturally began.

Roy’s first question was simple, pointing directly at the reality of this world, seeking clues to break free from it.

“No, it’s more like a dream.”

Without hesitation, the devil gave an ambiguous answer.

He looked toward the end of the street, his dark golden pupils rippling slightly. Within them, one could vaguely see branches rapidly receding, ultimately revealing a pale gray iron gate. In the next moment, they arrived at the gate.

“A grand dream intertwined with truth and falsehood, with disordered time.”

Silently, the iron gate slowly opened, while the soldiers guarding its sides showed no reaction whatsoever.

Led by the devil like a child, walking through the iron gate, throughout the entire process, Roy kept her small head lowered. She knew exactly what this place was, for it was what she had once considered her second home.

Governor Robert’s mansion.

Gently squeezing the captain’s small hand, the man chuckled and reminded: “No need to be so shy. Look, who’s here?”

Hearing this, Roy’s gaze flickered slightly, and she reluctantly raised her head.

Coming toward them was a luxurious carriage bearing the Auran royal emblem, with an old butler by its side.

Seemingly noticing something unusual ahead, with the coachman’s call, the carriage slowly stopped. The soldiers guarding it approached with cold faces, surrounding these unexpected visitors who had suddenly appeared.

Before long, the two soldiers blocking the carriage moved aside, and the old butler came before them, scrutinizing them for a moment before politely asking: “Although you two haven’t been invited, why did you enter my master’s mansion privately? You should know this violates imperial law.”

“Please state your purpose, otherwise, we’ll have to inconvenience you both…”

“Sir, I apologize for this intrusion, but we have urgent matters and need to see your master.”

Interrupting the old butler’s warning, the devil held the umbrella with one hand and Roy with the other, slightly bowing to show respect: “I wonder if you, and the gentleman in the carriage, still remember this child?”

Looking at the child indicated by the man, the old butler frowned, feeling strangely familiar with him, yet in his memory, he had never seen him or anyone with similar features.

This feeling was so strong it was somewhat abnormal, as if a piece of the memory puzzle was missing.

Leaving only an empty void of black.

After a very brief judgment, the old butler was certain that he had always accompanied his master, and beside him, there had never been such a person. But to be cautious, the old man said “Just a moment” before turning to go to the carriage window to consult the governor, who was waiting indifferently.

The atmosphere in the rain became increasingly oppressive as time passed, almost suffocating.

Unconsciously, Roy’s breathing became much more rapid. Her gaze no longer avoided but looked directly at the carriage, waiting for that person to show himself, even though she was extremely reluctant to see him.

The old butler’s reaction earlier had been very clear—he didn’t remember, no, it was as if he had never seen her before. That couldn’t be described as merely forgetting; it was more like her figure…

Had been erased by an invisible hand, disappearing from every place where she should have existed.

This feeling was very strange, involuntarily chilling.

Therefore, although she still harbored a deep hatred for the governor and didn’t want to see him in any form, at this moment, she desperately hoped, even longed for… that person to recognize her.

Even if it meant treating her like an abandoned child again.

“Creak…”

The faint sound of a door opening penetrated the rain curtain and entered the captain’s ears. Those footsteps were like drumbeats, beating on her heart one by one.

Finally, that person came near them.

Looking at that familiar face, much younger than in her last memory, with almost no sense of vicissitude, Roy recognized that this was Governor Robert from ten years ago, when they first met.

But unfortunately…

“I believe I have not seen this child before.”

The man’s tone was still as before, using gentleness to mask indifference, his words as refreshing as a spring breeze, showing no sharpness: “Otherwise, with such remarkable features, I shouldn’t have no impression.”

Unfortunately, he couldn’t recognize her either.

Instinctively tightening her grip on the devil’s hand, the captain lightly bit her lip, not attempting to make any effort, nor questioning whether, in this so-called grand dream, the other party had not yet met her.

The devil bringing her here had already made everything clear.

At this point, Roy seemed to understand the true meaning of the “different scenery” her ancestor had mentioned earlier.

Could it be a past without herself, a world that had forgotten her, or rather, a world without her?

But what did this represent?

In confusion, Roy felt herself being led away again, getting further and further from the familiar governor, until she could no longer see the silhouette of the mansion in the rainy night. Yet she still held tightly to the devil’s hand.

As if fearing that even he would forget her.

That loneliness of being eternally forgotten was truly terrifying, as if all traces of existence had been erased.

“This is the path I wanted to show you, the thing I wanted to tell you.”

The man’s voice had deepened considerably, no longer carrying that methodical, persuasive feel from past negotiations, but simply narrating in a very plain manner, narrating the unforgettable scenery he had also experienced.

“This is a dream, child.”

As if in just a moment, the two had walked through the desolate west, stopping for several moments in front of a tightly closed farmhouse, listening to the frenzied barking of hunting dogs, the urgent footsteps of soldiers approaching and then receding, watching them search cluelessly for a person who didn’t exist.

Like watching an absurd and satirical play.

Continuing forward, the man spoke calmly: “And as I said earlier, this dream is intertwined with truth and falsehood, with disordered time. Though clearly not conforming to the logic the world should have, it’s extremely likely…”

“To become reality at some point.”

Thunder suddenly sounded, whether exploding in the gloomy horizon or appearing in Roy’s heart was unclear, making it difficult for her to calm her mind for a moment. She lowered her head somewhat helplessly, trembling uncontrollably.

It was a kind of instinctive fear originating from the depths of the heart, from the depths of unknown consciousness, present since human birth.

Because that possibility was too unreal, beyond human imagination.

Because that path was inherently…

An unspeakable taboo.

Noticing that the captain’s state was off, the devil gradually stopped, looking at the distant citadel, the corners of his mouth carrying an almost imperceptible smile: “So, shall we continue walking, child?”

Silence, absolute silence.

At this moment, this world called a “dream” seemed to have fallen into an abnormal stagnation, just like the response of the world during their last meeting in the far northern seas.

In the still world, the length of time was indiscernible. The only thing that could be distinguished was that smile at the corner of the man’s lips, gradually disappearing until only coldness and very faint bewilderment remained.

“Why…”

The devil murmured softly, unclear whether he was asking the boy who was slowly raising his head, or asking himself.

But he couldn’t finish his question; someone picked up where he left off.

“Why not?”

The captain mumbled as if in a dream, her eyes like a rekindled fierce fire, brilliant and radiant.
