Captain – Chapter 47 – The Culprit

Captain Roy could change her attitude at the drop of a hat, faster than turning a page.

This was a widely circulated rumor in the Eastern Seas back then, and only when actually facing this legendary pirate did the Black Raven Society’s dignitaries discover it wasn’t an exaggeration.

This rogue captain’s ability to change face was even more powerful than the mercurial Elder!

“Don’t let blood be shed, Captain! Look, we can pay more—five times, no, ten times! Ten times the price! Could we just let bygones be bygones?”

Witnessing this scene, Sand Fox, who had been drinking nearby, was so frightened that he dropped his glass. The expensive crystal shattered on the ground, fragments and amber-colored wine spilling everywhere. He hurriedly stood up, retreating while nervously trying to negotiate.

He had witnessed the prowess of this fierce tiger when enraged—that blade-splitting doors and cutting canes with a speed and power that even the Lone Wolf of their organization would fall short of.

If this dangerous pirate were allowed to attack, how could anyone in this secret chamber survive?

“Oh, ten times? Did you say that?”

Roy’s eyes brightened slightly, as if seeing an ocean of flowing gold coins. She stepped forward and grabbed Sand Fox by the collar, her gaze full of ferocity and threat.

Seeing that wolf-like stare, Sand Fox nearly fainted. He hurriedly cried out: “Yes… yes! Could you please let go of me first? I wasn’t the one who set the fire!”

While shouting, Sand Fox suddenly felt intense regret, because it seemed the captain hadn’t set a ransom price yet—couldn’t she now demand an astronomical sum?

Just as Sand Fox was lamenting with a woeful face, someone interrupted this absurd and laughable scene.

“The revenge proposal was approved by the founder, and the person who planned and executed it… was me, Captain Roy.”

A sinister laugh came from across the table. The captain released Sand Fox, who remained pale with fear, and turned to look at the shadowy youth dressed as a slave master: “Oh? And who might you be?”

“Mountain Demon.”

The youth codenamed Mountain Demon supported himself on the round wooden table as he stood up, circling around the table’s edge to Roy’s front, flashing a set of white teeth: “Captain, our Black Raven Society has never had the habit of paying to save our lives. Usually, it’s others begging us for mercy. Moreover, revenge was the founder’s will, a proposal supported by the entire Black Raven Society. If you want to avenge that lucky little runt who survived, you’d better consider carefully…”

“Whether it’s worth offending the Black Raven Society for the sake of a sworn enemy!”

“Sworn enemy?”

Roy looked at him in bewilderment: “You mean Caine?”

“Yes, the Empire’s youngest admiral today, commander of the First Fleet—Caine Howard.”

Mountain Demon spread his arms, with an exaggerated expression: “Surely you know that the First Fleet was dispatched specifically to eradicate the Mermaid.”

Roy frowned at this figure who circled around her, gradually lowering her hand from the curved saber: “And then?”

Seemingly satisfied with the captain’s reaction, Mountain Demon narrowed his eyes slightly: “And then? Do you realize what you’ve done? With your selfless help, even with the organization deploying most of its assassins, the chances of successfully assassinating Federo remain slim.”

“Thanks for the compliment.”

Roy’s tone was completely flat, but her hand, which Mountain Demon had assumed was lowered because the captain had changed her mind, was now tightly clenched into a fist.

Mountain Demon’s eye twitched a few times: “Although you’ve indeed played an important role in this war, Captain, I’m not praising you. Rather, I’m curious if you understand the consequences of the organization’s failure?”

“What consequences could there be? Lose a batch of assassins, compensate me with a large sum, then flee Frans Island with your tail between your legs like stray dogs. Surely you’re not going to tell me there’s only one escape route from this secret chamber.”

Roy recounted emotionlessly, as if it all had nothing to do with her.

“Yes, we can retreat, but what about you?”

Angered by the captain’s nonchalant attitude, Mountain Demon gritted his teeth and said in a sinister voice: “You don’t think that after discovering your identity, the governor would just let you leave?”

Though she despised this executioner’s tone, Roy had to admit he was right. If Federo truly knew her identity, he would absolutely not leave her any path to survival, even if she had directly or indirectly saved his life.

“Once this assassination fails, given old Federo’s nature, he will immediately seal all exits from this base to the outside world. Those wolf-like navy men have probably already approached the outskirts of the town. At this rate, we’ll soon be trapped like fish in a barrel.”

Mountain Demon subtly retreated half a step. By now, he was less than a meter from the stone door, and his gradually lowering hand had one on the gun handle at his waist.

The executioner’s movement was so slight that even Roy didn’t notice. She only instinctively felt that the atmosphere in the room was somewhat strange. Whether it was the intensely reactive Mountain Demon or the silent Elder, everything seemed to be developing in a bizarre direction.

“Yes, Captain.”

Just as Roy was confused, the youth’s voice emerged at the right moment, soft and gentle like a soul-captivating magical sound: “He is the traitor.”

At the words “traitor,” Mountain Demon’s entire body suddenly tensed. He swiftly drew the short pistol he had been gripping, pointing it directly at those dark golden pupils.

Get out of the way quickly, you damned pirate.

Mountain Demon thought coldly. Given Roy’s reflexes, no matter how unexpected his move was, she should be able to dodge. And once she dodged…

At some point, Roy had already positioned herself between the youth and Mountain Demon. If she instinctively crouched to avoid the shot, the charged lead bullet in the pistol would certainly pass through the gap in the crystal chandelier, directly hitting the youth’s forehead.

Mountain Demon had absolute confidence in his calculations, for he had patiently and agonizingly planned for this moment for ten years.

After ten years of preparation, he knew every angle of the crystal chandelier’s structure like the back of his hand. How could this shot possibly miss?

But what Mountain Demon hadn’t anticipated was that he would be met not with the empty space left after Roy’s dodge, but with a fair fist.

“Bang!”

Despite the intense pain and dizziness pervading his mind, Mountain Demon still pulled the trigger on his pistol. However, that shot, accompanied by spattering blood, merely passed through the captain’s golden hair, slanting into the crystal chandelier, causing a burst of sparks and Sand Fox’s panicked scream.

Knowing he had missed, Mountain Demon threw away the pistol. One hand covering his broken nose, the other fiercely striking a certain inconspicuous protrusion on the stone door.

The requirements for entering a Black Raven Society base were extremely strict, but leaving was incredibly convenient and quick—partly to facilitate emergency relocations, and partly indicating that those who could enter the base were all trusted core members. This design now facilitated Mountain Demon’s escape.

But when Mountain Demon turned his head, he saw another fist.

That fist was larger than Roy’s by quite a bit, though its force was actually somewhat less. Still, landing squarely on the side of someone’s face, it packed plenty of destructive power, even sending Mountain Demon flying backward, crashing heavily into the round wooden table, toppling all the crystal glasses and spilling wine.

“So, what exactly is a Mountain Demon?” Roy mumbled, sidestepping Mountain Demon as he crashed toward her.

“A monkey, a fierce and combative monkey.”

A familiar voice came from behind the stone door, causing the captain to instantly widen her eyes, looking toward it in utter disbelief.
