Captain – Chapter 489 – Words of Regret

The girl’s journey continued, but the devil’s figure was no longer by her side.

After hearing the captain’s declaration of war, the devil knew that his words to that old friend had reached her ears without missing a single word, and had become her support in some way.

So he put away his tricks, silently departed, and returned to his throne on the lonely island.

As if he would remain silent, coldly observing until the end.

That was what Roy thought.

But what she didn’t expect was that after leaving the captain’s cabin of the Mermaid and walking through several pages in the old dream, the devil’s voice sounded in her ears once more. His tone had returned to its frivolity, and he only spoke of trivial matters, as if they had never had any conflict.

As if they were truly harmonious ancestor and descendant.

When the captain was in a small tavern in Elvet, seeking the feeling of old times, she finally lost patience with the devil’s aimless chatter about “wine” for what seemed like the hundredth time.

The girl put down the wine glass she had raised to her lips and asked irritably: “Look, ancestor, you should know that no matter how many times you try to get close to me, our relationship won’t improve.”

The implication was clear—stop wasting your breath.

“Oh, I certainly know that.”

Seemingly unsurprised by her impatience, the devil answered without hesitation even though he had been interrupted. He said with exceptional “sincerity”: “I merely want to talk with you more, truly, because as I’ve told you before, you are my most perfect child.”

That was a conversation they’d had long ago, on the Satin.

Roy thought silently. Although it had only been a few short months since she left that ice-encased ship, wandering and searching through this great dream felt as though she had lived through thousands of years.

It truly felt like a lifetime ago.

The devil’s explanation didn’t end there. He continued speaking smoothly, expressing views that made her uncomfortable yet were difficult to refute: “I’m not saying we’re the same kind, but child, you cannot deny that in this world, we are the people closest to each other, in every aspect.”

Nearly perfect bodies, unimaginable power, unsolvable fates, and this dream…

Everything was so similar.

“So what? No matter what, I will never become someone like you.”

Hearing the girl’s blunt words, the devil smiled indifferently: “What kind of person you become doesn’t matter to me at all, child. I told you, I just want to talk with you.”

“Soon there won’t be any chance to do so.”

The voice floated from an unknown source. Somehow, the devil, dressed in a brand new formal attire, was now sitting across the wooden table, picking up the wine bottle to refill her glass slightly.

Soon there won’t be any chance.

These words were interesting, containing regret and threat among almost all negative implications.

Roy knew these weren’t pleasant words, but she didn’t understand the hidden meaning behind the man’s statement or what he was referring to. So despite her slight displeasure, she didn’t interrupt him, quietly waiting for what would come next.

Unlike his First Mate, the devil didn’t enjoy keeping secrets, because he was accustomed to controlling everything.

Even if his “prey” knew some secrets, it wouldn’t affect the big picture. He had such confidence, which is why in the icy sea, at the beginning of the dream, he was willing to answer her questions.

This time was no different.

“You should feel it by now, Elizabeth. At our level, many emotions and feelings can no longer affect us, just like the drunkenness you seek.”

“Only one thing is different, and that is loneliness.”

Pouring himself some wine, the devil took a small sip and said wistfully: “Loneliness is truly a marvelous thing. Even deities, who exist as rules and are eternally undying, are sometimes troubled by it. That’s why there are so-called ‘descents’ or ‘miracles.'”

“Time is too long with no end, so they need feedback to reduce this feeling.”

“The same applies to us, of course.”

Looking at the expressionless girl who increasingly resembled a block of ice, the devil smiled and said: “There are many ways to dispel loneliness, not just through love and companionship. For me, exploring unknown seas and admiring unseen wonders is the best remedy.”

“But unfortunately, after that despicable… or as you might call it, great betrayal, I was forever trapped in one corner, never again having the chance to pursue my romantic adventures.”

“So loneliness gradually grew, like an insect, gnawing at my heart bit by bit. Even familiar scenes viewed through my descendants’ eyes became a form of torture.”

“No one could speak with me, no one was worthy of conversing with me, because we existed in different realms. They could never understand what the world I saw was like.”

“Until you appeared.”

When the devil said this, Roy almost doubted if there was something wrong with her eyes, because in his dark golden pupils, she saw very genuine affection.

Like the indulgence an elder shows to their most beloved descendant.

“I poured countless efforts into you, reshaped your bloodline, wove your destiny, and finally, step by step, brought you before me. And to gain your forgiveness, I was even willing to promise you the entire world. Do you know why?”

Knowing this wasn’t a question but merely a lead-in, Roy maintained her silence, waiting patiently.

“Because from the very beginning, I knew you would be my last and most perfect masterpiece left in this world. You are, in the truest sense, my most orthodox descendant and spiritual continuation.”

“My child…”

Slowly putting down his wine glass, the devil called to her tenderly, reaching out his hand to gently caress her cheek.

Perhaps sensing that the man’s words and expressions at this moment were entirely sincere, Roy didn’t dodge or strike his hand away as she had done when they first met in the dream.

She only looked at him with slight bewilderment, not understanding what meaning his words still held now.

Didn’t he think it was already too late?

As if he could see through the girl’s thoughts, the devil sighed softly, withdrew his hand, and his mood suddenly became very faint: “There is no meaning, neither in these words nor in anything else in this world.”

“Do you think it truly matters to me whether you wake up, or whether you forget everything and disperse all emotion? Why did I let you enter the dream early and do these meaningless things?”

“I simply didn’t want to destroy you, to ruin this jewel into which I had poured endless effort.”

“Can you understand this feeling?”

He didn’t wait for the girl’s answer, because everything that had happened along the way had already shown that even if she could understand, she would never change her choice. She was as stubborn as his beloved from many years ago. Therefore, the devil merely smiled casually and stood up, supporting himself on the table.

“Whether you want to know or not, I must tell you that you’ve reached this point because of my restraint. But due to certain… betrayals I cannot tolerate, it ends here.”

“Continue walking toward the end, Elizabeth. Don’t worry, I won’t try to persuade you anymore.”

The devil slowly backed away, his form becoming like a mist, passing through the drinking patrons and tables filled with empty bottles, gradually fading and blurring until he completely vanished.

Only his final parting words remained, filled with regret.

“As you said, everything is left to fate.”
