Captain – Chapter 528 – Gentleman

Without realizing it, the young woman had stepped onto the main avenue.

Though the scenery of heaven was extraordinarily magnificent, Captain Roy was not someone without experience—she had seen the moonlit glaciers of the far north and the world’s end, all equally breathtaking.

Therefore, when she took her first step, she had already come to her senses and began curiously examining this city. She was somewhat surprised to discover that while the buildings here were extremely ancient, the era they seemed to represent… appeared to connect with the present world.

As she walked earlier, Roy had seen establishments along the street that didn’t fit the characteristics of the era—bars and even jewelry shops that were completely at odds with the architectural style.

What she couldn’t understand was whether these soul-like people truly needed such things.

Roy suspected they couldn’t even touch physical objects.

She came to this conclusion because earlier, she had tried to make contact with these people, but no matter what she did, all she received in return was indifference.

They seemed completely unable to see her.

Moreover, and more crucially, when she inadvertently collided with an oncoming passerby, not only did she feel no impact, but she watched helplessly as that person passed straight through her body.

As if they weren’t in the same world.

This made the young woman breathe a sigh of relief while also feeling somewhat helpless.

After all, judging from her earlier attempts, these beings posed no threat to her, but likewise, she had no way to learn about this city through them.

She could only rely on her own exploration to seek out Aegis, hidden somewhere unknown.

Though they can’t touch me, these fellows still seem able to interact with the world.

Withdrawing her gaze from the transparent floor-to-ceiling windows of a tavern, Roy thought with a slight frown. She had clearly seen people inside the tavern naturally drinking wine.

There were even people toasting with wedding cups!

What kind of strange place was this?

Muttering to herself, Roy pondered for a long time, but the confusion in her heart only grew stronger.

With white clouds as foundation and celestial stairs as guide.

At a glance, all the buildings gleamed pure white, and the residents were all soul-like “angels”—everything was as sacred as the heaven described in mythology.

But what about the taverns, jewelry shops, and even libraries? Not to mention these modern facilities, and these “angels” were so ordinary.

Not ordinary in form or existence, but in the lives they were living.

Some were drinking, some were in love, and most outrageously, there were even people running around selling newspapers!

Could it be that heaven also kept up with the times, and “angels” also had to struggle for their livelihood?

This was truly absurd.

Sighing softly, Roy finally realized that while this place was called heaven, it probably had nothing to do with the paradise of mythology—it was more like a foreign land.

It just seemed more beautiful compared to the Death Silence Triangle and other sinister places.

Just as the young woman was hanging her head slightly, making these irrelevant judgments while having no thoughts about finding the divine artifact or breaking the deadlock, she suddenly stumbled.

Her steps halted abruptly. After a moment of bewilderment, Roy suddenly turned sideways and looked back.

That was the path she had come from. On the spacious street, “angels” strolled leisurely, and phantom-like carriages shuttled back and forth from time to time.

The scene was no different from before, and the captain couldn’t find any anomalies she was looking for.

But…

She was certain she hadn’t felt wrong.

When she had been looking down in thought earlier, she had clearly… clearly been bumped into by someone!

Whether intentional or accidental, that feeling of impact was real—like a hurried person passing by and accidentally brushing shoulders with her.

Had she suddenly become able to touch these people?

Looking at the pedestrians approaching, the captain raised an eyebrow slightly and reached out to test, discovering this wasn’t the case—she still couldn’t touch these phantom-like people.

Then there was only one possibility.

In this sky city, besides her, there were other… people from the present world.

Is this a test? And who are you?

Without feeling confused for long, Roy became serious almost instantly, developing intense wariness toward this “kindred spirit” of unknown allegiance and purpose.

Is it… you?

Thinking of a certain possibility, Roy instinctively reached for the curved blade at her waist, but then reconsidered—if it was him, even the sharpest blade would be useless. She let her hand fall back to her side, took a deep breath, and turned back around.

But she hadn’t expected the answer to be revealed so quickly.

So quickly that even she felt somewhat dazed.

A flamboyant gentleman wearing a black tailcoat, top hat, and carrying a black wooden cane had somehow quietly appeared in front of her.

“Good afternoon, Miss.”

Feeling the young woman’s gaze upon him, the man tipped his top hat and smiled, saying as sunlight fell on his face, making his eyes even brighter.

Brilliant as fire.

“I wonder if I might have the honor, at this beautiful time, to invite you to join me for…”

“Afternoon tea?”

Seeing the young woman had no reaction and only stared at him like a leopard after coming to her senses, her pupils flashing with cold light, the “gentleman” shrugged, put his top hat back on, placed both hands on his cane, and smiled undiminished, undeterred in his invitation.

Looking at that familiar face she would recognize even if it turned to ash, and those deep, noble dark golden eyes, Roy took several deep breaths before barely suppressing her hostility.

She still didn’t respond, sizing up the person before her, only her pale brows furrowing even tighter, not knowing what medicine he was selling in his gourd with such a…

Nonsensical invitation.

Though only about ten days had passed since the end of the great dream, seeing the person before her again, the captain felt as if a lifetime had passed—both because of the time experienced in that dream, and because after their separation in that world, he had already regarded her as a mortal enemy.

Yes, the gentleman before her was the devil.

This was an expected encounter.

“What’s wrong, no appetite?”

Tilting his head, the devil seemed puzzled by her reaction and reached out as if to pat her head.

Seeing this, Roy instinctively stepped back half a pace to avoid it, then watched as the man smiled nonchalantly and withdrew his hand, the confusion in her eyes deepening.

She didn’t understand what this was—had he changed his mind, or had he become shameless to the extreme?

Didn’t you say you would regard me as a mortal enemy, ancestor?

Her gaze flickering slightly, out of caution, the captain didn’t immediately pierce through this facade but instead lowered her eyelids and said with feigned grievance: “Ancestor, what do you mean by this? Don’t think that just because you invite me for tea, I’ll forgive you.”

This statement was ambiguous and could be interpreted in multiple ways if one wanted to.

She would just see how the person before her would respond.

“Forgive?”

The devil raised an eyebrow, first seeming somewhat puzzled, then suddenly remembering something and raising his hand with apparent realization: “Oh, I understand. Is it because…”

“I bullied you before?”

This was very interesting—clearly talking about himself, yet speaking as if referring to a stranger.

Roy keenly caught the anomaly. Her eyes turned slightly, then she naturally raised her eyebrows with a look of surprise and asked: “Before… what do you mean?”

This was acting, but also not really, because she truly couldn’t see clearly what the situation was.

Couldn’t see clearly what game the devil was playing.

“Literally—before you came here.”

Raising his chin to indicate the young woman should follow, the devil walked casually while saying: “It’s somewhat troublesome to explain clearly. You can just think of me and the… other me who bullied you as two different people. But more precisely…”

“I probably don’t count as him.”

The gentleman smiled, turning slightly to tap his cane while explaining nonchalantly: “I can only be considered a record, no different from the text carved on the stone tablets you’ve seen along the way. The only difference is…”

“Those are inanimate objects, while I possess consciousness.”
