Captain – Chapter 53 – The Devil Dances on Knife’s Edge

The lion’s roar echoed through the rainy night.

The overwhelming pressure, like a storm, spread to every corner of Frans Island through the solemn messengers. However, the residence that was both the starting and ending point of this war had not yet been affected by the changes at the manor.

Dozens of pirates with scars on their bodies and fierce looks in their eyes broke through the rain curtain, gathering outside the building filled with the smell of death. They were just waiting for their captain’s order to storm the residence once more and completely eliminate those troublesome assassins.

In the central room on the second floor of the residence.

Roy and Duke Darren stood side by side, looking together through the window glass at that mass of dark figures.

“Including the previous sixteen, there are sixty-two people outside the house.”

Hearing the scout’s report from behind, Darren looked at the eager captain and frowned, asking: “You really want to jump down… from here?”

“Death’s scythe descends from heaven, isn’t that what the holy book says?”

After completing her final check, Roy patted the curved sword hanging at her waist forcefully and smiled: “Besides, Rex and I are old friends. Having not seen each other for so long, how could I not catch up?”

One-eyed Rex, the captain of the Orca, was the nemesis of the Golden-Eyed Devil mentioned by Darren.

Perhaps having confidence in the captain’s combat prowess, Darren no longer tried to persuade her to sneak out through the side door of the residence. Instead, he smiled and shook his head, walking out of the room with the assassin, leaving only a most ordinary farewell.

“Then goodbye, dear Captain.”

Roy turned her head to watch this old duke leave. She knew well that this parting would inevitably be forever, with no possibility of meeting again.

This Duke was indeed as rumored: optimistic and kind. No wonder he was beloved by the Auran people.

Roy thought silently, then suppressed all these superfluous thoughts and turned her attention back to the restless pirates.

Looking at those fierce-faced, burly figures, the captain seemed to smell the coarse tobacco on them even across such a distance. A feeling of utmost familiarity arose spontaneously, her body trembling slightly, her flowing blood seeming to cheer and rejoice.

Rejoicing at the return of the Golden-Eyed Devil!

Roy controlled her breathing rate as much as possible, while at the same time, more than fifty pirates had begun to walk slowly toward the residence. Only the captain of the Orca, wearing a black eye patch and a blood-red captain’s coat, remained standing in place, with just one First Mate and eight guards left by his side.

The time from the pirates’ action to entering the residence was extremely brief, but to Roy it seemed to have lasted half a century.

Until the clear sound of clashing swords came from downstairs, Roy awoke as if from a dream, leaped onto the window sill, and delivered a fierce blow with her elbow.

“Crash!”

Even amid the intense sound of rain, the sound of breaking glass was still distinct.

The one-eyed pirate captain looked up following the scattered fragments and immediately saw the agile figure leaping down from the eaves.

The person’s golden hair danced in the downpour, and those dark golden eyes were like magma about to extinguish yet still burning. That eye color had once been deeply imprinted in the one-eyed captain’s heart, for it symbolized the most formidable opponent in his pirate career.

As if stung by a scorpion, the one-eyed pirate instinctively retreated, but when he saw clearly the person who had rolled to the ground, he found it was a stunningly beautiful young woman.

Just a woman after all…

The one-eyed captain secretly mocked himself for overreacting. Everyone knew that the famous Captain Roy had perished in the boundless whirlpool along with the empire’s First Fleet. The great captain had even held a farewell ceremony for this. How could such a dead person crawl back from hell?

Moreover, Captain Roy was a genuine man.

“Finish her off.”

Having figured this out, the one-eyed captain was no longer interested in the young woman who looked extremely similar to his late adversary. Expressionlessly, he waved his hand to order, and four of the eight guards immediately moved to surround Roy as she charged toward them with her body slightly tilted.

The First Mate standing beside the one-eyed captain also saw Roy’s face clearly at this time. His heart stirred, and he advised: “Captain, I think this woman looks quite good. Why don’t we…”

Without guessing, one could know the First Mate’s thoughts. The one-eyed captain glared at him fiercely: “That old man said not to leave a single survivor. If we’re found harboring this woman afterward, how can I continue to sail the seas?”

The First Mate repeatedly agreed, but his gaze still lingered on that exquisite face. But the next moment, the greed and regret in his eyes completely disappeared, replaced by shock and terror.

“Clang!”

The curved sword etched with wave patterns was unsheathed. Everyone perceived a silver moon flashing by, and the two guards who charged first among the escorts retreated with screams, their hands that had been holding weapons completely severed at the root, bright red blood gushing out like a waterfall, unstoppable.

Before the remaining two could react, two ghastly wounds appeared on their chests, faintly revealing the white bones and organs within. They made “gurg-gurg” sounds from their throats as they fell backward.

In just one breath, the young woman had dispatched four guards who had come to block her way. It was only at this moment that the four men chatting beside the one-eyed captain reacted, their faces grave as they shielded the First Mate and the captain behind them.

“Rex!”

Seeing four capable subordinates perish, the one-eyed captain couldn’t help but frown. And when he heard the slightly high-pitched voice call out that name, the calmness in his eyes was finally broken, gradually churning up emotions named absurdity and bewilderment.

The one-eyed captain looked at the young woman who was slightly tilting her head, saw the composed smile on her face, and that sense of familiarity grew stronger. He pushed aside the guards, gripped the hilt of his sword, stepped forward, and demanded in a sonorous and powerful voice: “Who exactly are you?”

“Who I am is not important. What’s important is…”

Roy flicked her curved sword, shaking off the blood droplets on it to the ground, then walked step by step toward the wary pirates.

“Who gave you the courage to block this captain’s way!”

As she finished speaking, Roy leaped into the air, delivering a direct slash at the one-eyed captain.

In this instant, Rex seemed to return to many years ago on the sea. That was the first meeting between the Mermaid and the Orca, and also his first encounter with that legend of the Eastern Seas. And the first words that Roy, still a youth who had just accepted the position of captain not long ago, said were…

“I don’t care who you are. What’s important is who gave you the courage to block this captain’s way!”

At this moment, all truths became clear, even if that truth was incredibly shocking.

“Roy!”

Rex roared as he drew the silver sword from its scabbard, clashing fiercely with the incoming curved blade.

Accompanied by sparks flying in all directions, the one-eyed captain felt as if he had been hit head-on by a huge rock. He began to retreat uncontrollably, knocking down the panic-stricken First Mate, and the two created a rhythm of urgent notes on the water-filled street.

Hearing the footsteps rapidly approaching from behind, Roy parried forward with her curved sword, forcing Rex back a few steps, then turned to face the enemy.

Having understood the identity of the newcomer from the captain’s roar, those guards swung their swords with some trepidation. Naturally, they were no match for this fierce tiger escaped from its cage. In just a few exchanges, they were knocked to the ground, moaning in pain and unable to rise.

“Why? Aren’t you already dead?”

After dispatching the four guards, Roy turned to parry the one-eyed captain’s offensive, excitement and ferocity flashing in her dark golden pupils: “Even if everyone else in the world died, this captain would not die.”

The First Mate who had been knocked to the ground saw that the situation was unfavorable. He crawled up from the wet, cold ground, intending to go into the residence to report, but was shot down by Roy with a backhand shot, twitching a few times before going still.

“A flintlock? Good stuff,” Rex praised.

Putting away the short pistol, Roy said proudly: “I got this from the Auran military with great difficulty. Of course it’s good stuff.”

The one-eyed captain couldn’t stand her smug look: “Speaking of the infamous Captain Roy, how have you become a woman now?”

“A woman? You’re the woman! Your whole family are women! No, soon I’ll make you a dead man who can’t speak.”

Roy, like a cat with its fur standing on end, fiercely shouted.

Although these two pirate captains were enemies, amid their laughing and cursing, they seemed like the most familiar of friends. However, that warm atmosphere was quickly torn to shreds by the downpour and the flash of blades.

Laughing while cursing, laughing while cutting people down, never crying with a dejected face due to danger or despair.

This is what true pirates are.
