Captain – Chapter 569 – Let’s Try It
Captain – Chapter 569 – Let’s Try It
Accompanied by sharp “creaking” sounds, the Taranhof, having completed repairs and barely able to operate, turned its bow and sailed toward the edge of the Death Silence Triangle.
Of course, to be safe, the route they chose had a significant deviation from the direction the Mermaid had left, to reduce the probability of encountering the giant serpent.
In case it had lost track of that mermaid and turned back.
Two days passed in the blink of an eye.
Although by the end of the first day, lightning had already begun flashing across the dim sky, and the originally “gentle” cold wind and rain had intensified with thunder, stirring up boundless huge waves on the sea, the journey was still relatively smooth.
The warship patched like a quilt, though it swayed violently in the storm, was unexpectedly resilient and didn’t need to worry about suddenly falling apart.
Under the pitch-black, churning sea surface, there were no dozen suns suddenly rising.
The storm had arrived, yet it was extraordinarily quiet.
Like a thrilling yet utterly ordinary rainstorm in the pirates’ journey, compared to battling mountain-like monsters, this was as gentle as a lullaby.
Barring any accidents, in less than a day they would be able to leave this dead zone.
But whether in life or sailing, things couldn’t always go smoothly. On the second night after departure, this tranquility was finally broken.
Accompanied by the warning howls of the water ghosts, the three of Richi left their dreams and came together to the deck, following their gestures to approach the side rail and look down.
Although the sea surface under the stormy night was deep as ink, relying on their exceptional eyesight, the three could barely make out those dark shadows drifting from the north.
Among them were drowned pirates, incomplete remains, and broken, charred wooden planks, looking as if a fierce naval battle had taken place here.

The three exchanged glances, an ominous feeling rising in their hearts.
“Fish a few up.”
After a moment of silence, Richi turned slightly and ordered the water ghosts gathered behind him.
“Thump!”
Soon, several relatively intact corpses with pale, swollen faces appeared on the deck.
After half-kneeling to observe for a while, Caine stood up and looked toward the other two, his expression somewhat grim: “Two of them are from the Mermaid.”
With speculation confirmed, Richi couldn’t help but frown and deduce: “Then the rest must be from the Ghost Scythe. After abandoning ship, they should have all boarded the Mermaid.”
After the young man finished speaking, Vivian, standing beside him, received the approximate death count through feedback from the water ghosts: “Within a one-mile radius to the north, there are a total of sixty-eight corpses, and most died from artillery fire.”
“This was most likely an ambush, by humans.”
After hearing the girl’s analysis, Caine’s expression remained calm, but his hands hanging at his sides gradually clenched. He looked at those two familiar faces filled with terror and added with forced calm: “It shouldn’t have been long since this happened.”
Drawing this conclusion through observation of these remains wasn’t difficult.
“You mean the attackers might still be nearby?”
Glancing at the young man’s clenched fists, Richi shook his head and waved for the water ghosts to throw these corpses overboard while looking into his eyes: “Don’t be naive. No one would be stupid enough to stay in place waiting for someone to come looking.”

Even an ordinary merchant ship could run nearly a hundred nautical miles within a few hours.
Let alone warships that dared attack the Mermaid and attempt to force the Golden-Eyed Devil into a dead end? Even if they miraculously knew the other party’s escape route, with the current Taranhof alone, there was absolutely no possibility of catching up.
“Besides, those in this world who dare to target her are either the Great Captain’s confidants or that devil’s followers. How could they leave flaws so easily?”
“We should still…”
The young man’s thinking wasn’t wrong. Logically, after a sneak attack succeeded, the attackers would either pursue or flee, and the possibility of remaining in neighboring waters was extremely small.
But it seemed Caine hadn’t considered this possibility at all. His pupils flashed slightly as he interrupted: “No, there’s a high probability they’re still lingering around here.”
“Or more precisely, still acting as patrol guards at the boundary of the Death Silence Triangle.”
Having his words suddenly cut off, the young man sighed lightly and instinctively wanted to refute, but after a brief thought, he held back the somewhat sharp words that had reached his lips.
Seeing the other lost in thought, Caine continued: “From any perspective, this was indeed an ambush, but its purpose might not necessarily have been to swallow the Mermaid whole. It’s also possible… they wanted to deliver it to that serpent’s mouth.”
“You mean using one tiger to devour the wolf?”
After listening, Richi was silent for a moment before murmuring this phrase.
“Yes, think about it. No matter who came, as long as their goal is to eliminate the captain, then this is the choice most likely to succeed with the least risk.”
Making way for the water ghosts carrying the remains, the young man turned sideways, looking toward the north where dark shadows kept drifting, and said in a deep voice: “And all they need to do is find the Mermaid’s inevitable route, then set up a wall there.”
“That’s all.”

Taking a few steps forward to stand beside Caine, the young man squinted and continued his reasoning: “If that’s truly the case, then this movable wall would need to follow the Mermaid from afar, ensuring it could only run closer and closer to the center of the web.”
“So it should be moving north along the boundary, though I don’t know how far it’s gone.”
“I’ll grant your reasoning makes sense.”
Feeling the young man’s gaze, Richi also turned to look at him: “But this is just one possibility. There are too many problems we simply can’t find answers to, and you know there are risks in going north.”
To this, Caine remained silent in agreement.
Just how the other party had determined the Mermaid’s movements and managed to complete this surprise attack under the already awakened captain’s nose was an almost unsolvable puzzle.
Moreover, whether the other party would continue pursuing according to his thinking to build this iron wall was more based on his speculation without solid evidence.
Additionally, as the young man said, rashly going north carried too great a risk, because if the Mermaid was there, then that specter must be there too.
Very likely they would crash into the giant serpent’s embrace before finding the attackers.
“I think even if those people are devil followers, that monster doesn’t necessarily recognize them, so they might not dare pursue deeply and might only stop at the outer edge.”
“That way we’d have a chance. Let’s try it.”
Despite being doused with cold water, Caine still wasn’t willing to give up and said these words.
Even Vivian, who had listened to the entire conversation, couldn’t quite understand what the young man meant by “try,” not knowing what exactly he wanted to try.

Was he still insisting they go north?
Even more surprising to the girl was that after hearing his words, Richi actually nodded after a moment of contemplation, holding up one finger: “Just try this once.”
What “once”? To pursue or not pursue—how could there be multiple times?
“What exactly are you planning?”
Watching Caine walk toward the bow as if understanding completely, Vivian furrowed her brow and asked in confusion, then finally learned the answer from the young man.
“Just being mindful of limits.”
Richi watched that retreating figure, seeing him stop before the crouching giant dragon and begin communicating, then continued: “Those guys who ambushed the Mermaid—we’ll only look for them once, starting from our current position.”
“Let that little… big guy fly north for a bit. If we can find them and the position isn’t too deep, we’ll help Captain Roy and them knock down this broken wall.”
“And get a better ship while we’re at it.”
Accompanied by intense wind pressure, the giant dragon soared into the sky, quickly disappearing into the black mist of the horizon. Even with Vivian’s eyesight, she could no longer trace it.
Simply the most perfect scout.
After watching the giant dragon disappear, the young man withdrew his gaze and looked at the approaching Caine.
“And if we can’t find them, everything stays the same.”
