Captain – Chapter 70 – Enzo of the Night Curtain
Captain – Chapter 70 – Enzo of the Night Curtain
The captain wasn’t just making things up.
The legend about the mysterious white fog circulated among pirates was something she had not only heard sung by troubadours in Yadris taverns, but had also personally participated in a voyage to seek the source of the white fog.
That was many years ago.
At that time, Roy was just a small sailor on a pirate ship. Because of his diligent work and sociability, he gained the captain’s favor, which gave him the opportunity to board the Ghost Scythe’s deck along with the ship’s core members, accompanying the already legendary Captain Enzo on a sea exploration.
Led by Enzo of the Night Curtain, and at the call of two other legendary pirates, that exploratory journey attracted more than ten renowned pirate captains from both sides of the ocean, as well as nearly a thousand elite members skilled in various forms of combat.
Such a luxurious lineup, with the advantage of surprise, would have been more than enough to capture the heavily guarded Hipalia Grand Port of the Federation.
But after planning by the group of captains, to prevent complications and reduce the possibility of being discovered by the Empire and Federation, only three pirate ships led by the Ghost Scythe were deployed for this mission.
They deliberately chose a sunny day with calm winds and waves, and set off from Dauya Port in the Southern Islands, heading north along the unclaimed Canis Island chain. After nearly two months of sailing, the strange white fog finally appeared.
Just like Roy’s current situation, the three pirate ships back then were heavily shrouded in white fog. Neither sunlight nor the Ghost Scythe’s whale oil-fueled searchlights could penetrate the mist, nor provide people with even the slightest visibility.

But even under these circumstances, Captain Enzo remained calm and confident. He ordered the sailors to reduce the sails and slow down, and personally steered the Ghost Scythe, leading the other two pirate ships to zigzag east and west, exploring this mysterious area not found on sea charts like fish swimming freely in the ocean.
Roy admitted that the Night Curtain of the Western Seas was indeed very powerful, but obviously, no matter how brilliant and godlike Captain Enzo was, he was just an ordinary person, not a transcendent being like Ancestor Edward.
So at that time, the young Roy had always been puzzled about how this captain could guide everyone like a bright lamp, avoiding countless obstacles both visible and hidden.
After some secret plotting, he took advantage of the cover of night and, with his agile movements, passed through the warning line formed by the fighting squad members, approaching the Ghost Scythe’s bridge where he witnessed the truth of this secret.
It was a strangely shaped pendant, carved from moonstone, presenting a terrifying skull shape. From its hollow and deep eye sockets flowed ethereal pale blue light, guiding the direction for the captain who held it.
That was also the guiding object Roy later used to find Devil’s Island.
Even now, Roy still couldn’t forget the scenes from that time.
Captain Enzo held the helm with one hand and the pendant with the other. Without turning his head, in a deep yet pleasant voice, he revealed the whereabouts of a little wildcat who, due to intense curiosity, refused to sleep and was currently hiding on the extended platform at the stern: “It’s so late, why are you still wandering around?”

Having learned the truth, Roy curled up on the platform, hugging his slender arms, shivering in the slightly cold sea breeze. He was planning to find an opportunity to sneak back to the sailor’s rest area when this sudden remark startled him and almost made him fall into the sea.
The young boy grabbed the railing at the stern, secretly poking his head out, still harboring a glimmer of hope that this great captain hadn’t discovered him but was just lovingly scolding a lover.
But that was ultimately just wishful thinking. Under normal circumstances, women were absolutely forbidden on pirate ships.
“Stop poking your head around, come here.”
Enzo still didn’t turn his head, yet it was as if he had a magical eye on the back of his head, capable of discovering anyone who was spying on him.
Back then, Roy of course didn’t know how he had been discovered. Only after experiencing a series of heart-stopping battles and assassinations, finally becoming the rightful captain of the Mermaid and gaining the reputation of a legendary pirate, did she understand that this wasn’t some mystic art, but rather the terrifyingly strong intuition of a pirate captain.
Hope completely shattered, Roy climbed over the railing with a bitter face, carefully approaching behind Enzo, gazing at the captain’s not-so-broad back with a pitiful look.
To prevent making noise during his night movement, the young boy wasn’t even wearing shoes at that time and was grimacing from the frost-covered ground that froze his feet, looking quite amusing.

After calling out this sneaky little figure, Enzo suddenly fell silent. He stared at the pale blue light flickering in the eye sockets of the pendant, a hint of surprise appearing in his eyes.
This pendant also came from a story whose origin couldn’t be traced. According to legend, it possessed a magical power that could penetrate hearts and lead people to find what they most desired. Of course, each person had only one chance to use it in their lifetime.
By all accounts, such a treasure should absolutely not malfunction like a compass, which was precisely what puzzled the captain.
Roy didn’t know what was going on in the captain’s mind before him, only thinking that he had been bluffing earlier and was now considering how to deal with his violation of ship rules. He felt both regretful and afraid.
The error he committed, speaking conservatively, was violating the schedule and trespassing in a forbidden area; speaking more seriously, it could be suspected as an assassination attempt on the captain, which would result in walking the plank to feed the sharks!
After an unknown period, just when the young boy was so suppressed and tense that he could hardly breathe, Enzo sighed softly, put the moonstone skull into his bosom, and released the helm at the same time, slightly turning his head to look at him.
Even in the dim environment shrouded by white fog, Roy could still clearly see the captain’s eyes.
What a pair of pupils they were! As beautiful as amethysts, as dazzling as the North Star, just like the goddess’s enchanting box from legends, filled with deadly attraction.

Roy stared blankly at those eyes, completely forgetting fear and uneasiness. It seemed that the moment he saw those deep purple pupils, he knew that such a powerful and charismatic captain would not take his small transgression to heart.
“Sneaking out is one thing, not even knowing to wear shoes is another.”
Sure enough, upon seeing this underage little figure, Captain Enzo just smiled helplessly, then reached out to hold Roy by the waist, placing him on the railing beside the helm. He then took off his own black coat and gently draped it over the young boy.
Roy clutched the collar of the coat, obediently sitting toward the outside of the railing, then turned back, looking at this pirate legend who dominated the Western Seas with curiosity and admiration, and spoke first: “Cap… Captain, I was just curious.”
Easily guessing the young boy’s thoughts, Enzo patted his small head and smiled: “Curious about why I know this white fog so well? Don’t worry, I won’t blame you, but you must remember, sometimes excessively strong curiosity can cost one’s life.”
“I understand, I definitely won’t dare next time.” Roy said this with his mouth, but his gaze flickered slightly, clearly not taking the captain’s words to heart.
Enzo of course noticed his little thoughts, secretly smiling bitterly for a while, then asked a question that surprised Roy so much he couldn’t close his mouth.
“I remember you, you were brought aboard by Ilias, are you… surnamed Roy?”
