Captain – Chapter 704 – Proof

“Let me make this clear first—I’m not certain either.”

Just as Wyatt and the other survivors from the Ghost Scythe were first shocked then excited by Roy’s opening words, with some barely able to restrain themselves from standing up, her next sentence fell like a bucket of cold water over their heads.

It brought them back to their senses while also drawing their attention to the word “possibly” in her statement.

Possibly still alive also meant possibly just empty hope.

But whether it was the important figures from the former Mermaid who reacted first, or Wyatt and the others who had calmed down, none showed disappointment on their faces.

They simply watched Roy quietly, knowing that if she said this, there must be more to follow.

And for someone already dead and people whose hearts had already died, any news and possibility was good, even if it only provided one more thread of hope.

Feeling the expectation and fervor in those gazes, even Roy felt some pressure. After taking a deep breath, she began to speak: “Not long ago, just a few days after we sailed into Storm Corner and dealt with that stupid serpent…”

“I encountered Enzo through certain means.”

Watching the people who, though growing confused, still listened intently without wanting to miss a single word, the captain naturally knew this explanation was far too vague.

Even though the pirates knew that both she and Enzo were extraordinary people with supernatural powers, they still found it hard to believe such an explanation of meeting without any buildup.

In their minds, if that curtain of night still existed in this world and had met with Captain Roy, then why not simply appear directly and join this expedition?

And if he was already gone, then the meeting made even less sense.

How could you possibly see a dead person, unless… he had become a real ghost?

Taking in the pirates’ shifting gazes, the young woman knew their minds were in turmoil. Without some evidence, it would be impossible to make them believe.

Explaining would be even more troublesome, since even she didn’t know what that situation truly was.

Was it a reunion in dreams, or words left by obsession?

No one could know until reaching the end.

And since speculation was useless, she might as well present proof directly.

With this thought, Roy reached into her coat, taking out the crystal skull from a hidden pocket, and tapped it against the table to draw everyone’s attention back.

“I know you’re all confused, but in fact, even today, I can’t figure it out either. Even when I met Enzo that time, I asked him what his current situation was, and the answer I got…”

“Was that he didn’t know either.”

“Didn’t know where he was, didn’t know if he was alive or already dead.”

After pausing briefly to let the crew digest this explanation that seemed like something from a Holy Church story, Roy didn’t keep them in suspense and directly showed them the pendant.

At the same time, she described the situation from just before her parting with Enzo.

“Think of it as a dream. Before we parted, in the final moments of that dream, Enzo gave this to me and told me the only thing he knew.”

“He said that as long as I walked this path, I would see the scenery he had witnessed, and as long as I followed the night, I could find him and reach the end.”

“And the so-called night is right here.”

The young woman’s voice gradually lowered, becoming almost dreamlike by the end.

And just as her words fell, the people watching the crystal skull clearly saw a faint luminescence light up in its deep eye sockets.

Everyone present, except for the recently returned Gerard, had participated in that meeting in the Great Triangle and knew the young woman had already used her opportunity.

Therefore, it was Caine who had been responsible for using the pendant to find those two twisted paths.

So the luminescence arising in the skull’s eye sockets was naturally not its innate property meant to guide Roy, but should be her handiwork, meant to…

As if worried they were seeing things, except for a few people including Richi, the pirates in the room rubbed their eyes one after another, then looked even more intently at the pendant.

Some were left speechless with shock, others’ eyes reddened.

Because they saw that against the backdrop of that painting-like luminescence, a wisp of night was gently drifting, gradually emerging from the eye socket and swaying without wind.

After a brief moment of instability, though it still swayed gently, it pointed steadily in one direction.

After an unknown amount of time, everyone came back to their senses. Roy had put away the pendant.

“Yes, just as you’re all thinking.”

Looking at everyone’s thoughtful expressions, the young woman said calmly: “Before we encountered those eastern people, the direction we were sailing was determined by that night.”

“And if I was once uncertain whether the direction it pointed to, and the end Enzo spoke of, referred to that ship of the dead or the devil’s lonely island…”

“Then now, the answer is quite obvious.”

Roy didn’t continue, but everyone present already understood.

The night pointed toward the nameless island, and if what Enzo said was true…

Then he was there too.

Although the captain had already said she didn’t know if Enzo was alive or dead, in Wyatt and the others’ eyes, he was naturally still alive, because while they had witnessed that tragically beautiful scene where night and fire intertwined, they didn’t know that the night ring had shattered.

And if the black ring still existed and the night endured, then the person who could command them must still be there.

But there were still too many mysteries.

For instance, even if he could escape from the giant serpent’s mouth, how could he avoid the sea of fire?

Moreover, even if he successfully escaped and was drifting alone at sea, how could he possibly survive?

Questions kept arising, causing the initially excited feelings of Wyatt and the others to gradually cool and subside, because no matter how they looked at it, this was completely unreasonable.

Could the captain really have… become a ghost?

Just as the atmosphere was gradually cooling and Roy was lowering her eyelids, planning to temporarily move past the topic and say they’d see when they neared the end, a voice suddenly rang out.

Right beside her.

“I might know that child’s possible situation, but I need more proof.”

Looking at her father who had suddenly spoken, the young woman was startled, then gradually brightened, thinking yes, he might know situations she was unfamiliar with.

After all, he was Captain Gerard.

The legendary figure who was omnipotent in the pirates’ eyes, quite possibly knowing older secrets.

“What proof do you need?”

So without needing to think much, Roy immediately asked him.

“About that child’s matter, he only told me the general outline. I need to know all the details, starting from when you left the far north and felt someone was watching.”

Gerard looked toward Caine and said in a deep voice: “Until you left the Great Triangle.”

Hearing this, Roy’s eyes flickered slightly, knowing that with her father’s understanding of the former Great Captain, he should have already detected from the first mate’s partial account that agreement… or rather wager with the devil, and saw deeper into it than she did.

Could this… really be a hidden scheme? But she couldn’t find any feasible logic.

Because any conspiracy or design couldn’t possibly deceive the devil.

Moreover, that night, Enzo truly had no reason to survive, so how could there be any arrangement?

Remembering when she fell from heaven, those gentle night curtains that supported her and finally completely dissipated, thinking of Enzo’s farewell-like comforting whispers before entering the dream, Roy thought silently, increasingly feeling this was absolutely impossible.

Even the hope she had harbored that the night curtain still existed quietly faded away.

But a moment later, the young woman still nodded to Caine, saying in an emotionless tone: “You tell it. Tell him, and tell everyone as well…”

“Everything. The whole story from beginning to end.”
