Captain – Chapter 740 – Waiting for You to Kill Me

That wisp of light did not fade away, but hovered in the air not far from the man.

To be precise, less than three meters from his fingertips.

Yet in that man’s eyes, he and that wisp of light, that cold and beautiful world, seemed separated by an invisible barrier—thin as gauze yet impossible to break through.

The starry sky was so close, so beautiful, yet so ethereal, like a soap bubble that could be seen but not touched, sorrowful and hopeless. Thus the roaring finally stopped.

Stopped as if resigned to fate.

The man’s outstretched, trembling hand fell back, and he slumped back into his throne in defeat.

He leaned forward, elbows on his knees, letting his disheveled hair and rainwater flowing down from his hat brim half-conceal his eyes, hiding the confusion within them.

Though his frame remained as imposing as before, though the Pirate King’s attire he wore was still noble, in the wind, rain, and shadows, he appeared so desolate.

And like a reflection of his despair, the brilliant throne grew dusty, and the surrounding lava died down.

The devil feared by all the world now seemed lonely and pitiful.

But this did not mean he was no longer dangerous.

Quite the opposite—now he was more powerful than at any moment in all of history.

The earlier eruption of great power that had forcibly pushed back the approaching night and lightning to the old seas, making the two struggle to resist and unable even to turn back in mourning, was proof of this.

Though the light had not fallen, those collapsing, invisible glass fragments had also frozen in mid-air due to the deity’s departure and the night becoming bright as day.

Like chains about to break but not yet broken, using their last strength to confine him here.

But in fact, the seal had ultimately shattered.

Even if it could temporarily block the devil’s departure, it could no longer limit his unleashed great power.

Except for his divine status remaining incomplete, the authority to command natural disasters and make thoughts reality not yet descended…

He was a god.

Even if the most remarkable pirates of the previous and current generations joined forces, even if the Lady had not left and the old man remained, even if that eastern one tore up agreements and came personally…

In terms of solitary mortal combat, it would be impossible to defeat him.

Even if the entire world pressed against him with unstoppable sharpness, killing him would not be so easy.

Facing such a situation, he could well take the initiative, using fierce attack instead of defense. Even if those great ones could withstand it, the people who came with them would die first.

Not one would be left.

If he lacked such ability, there would not have been that great compromise hundreds of years ago.

Of course, he had another safer choice that could guarantee victory—trying to break those remaining chains and simply leave, flying away.

Presumably no one could keep him, and after that, he would have ample time for revenge.

Making everyone live under his shadow once again.

Both choices were good ones, at least they would tip the scales of victory toward him.

But after the starlight drifted back and the roaring ceased, that man had made no move from beginning to end, showing no interest even in making the present world fleet pay a price.

As if everything had lost meaning.

Indeed, anyone who had planned for a thousand years and endured to the end, only to discover that the path they sought was severed and they would never have another chance to realize their unfinished vision, would likely be as lost as he was, shrouded in deep despair and powerlessness.

Never mind fighting or revenge—even the desire to survive faded in the emptiness.

This was why he remained silent and indifferent even though he knew that black blade was approaching.

But the reunion the two were about to have, that fateful battle spanning a thousand years through ancient and modern times, could not possibly end so boringly in the devil’s self-destruction.

Because after calming down, analyzing the course of events and all the causes and effects, and “touching” the other shore in despair, the man suddenly understood the truth.

Then he was surprised and wildly joyful, his body trembling slightly as he began to laugh softly in a somewhat psychotic manner.

The soft laughter echoed in the shadows, seeming particularly sinister.

But soon, the coldness and self-mockery in the laughter disappeared, replaced by violence and madness, freely venting the enormous joy of recovery.

As the laughter grew louder and more terrifying, the man’s previously hunched body straightened again.

Returning to imposing grandeur, mountain-like grandeur.

And the dusty throne and extinguished lava also successively recovered their brilliance and shot skyward due to the deafening laughter, the gloomy “prison” turning blood red like hell itself.

After who knows how long, the laughter faded, leaving only the man’s satisfied and contemptuous cold words.

“So… it was just a deception after all.”

The devil lazily leaned back on his throne, gazing up at the starry sky, his dark gold pupils burning fiercely, radiating light more intense than stars, moon, or lava.

“Merely leaving, a little trick of cause and effect tracing—how long can that hold me back, Lady? And that chosen one of yours, who only knows how to keep promises but knows nothing of the beauty of the other shore, lacking even the courage to pursue the ultimate end—that ignorant one, that coward.”

“You lack the courage to face me, yet you place all pressure and hope on those children, thinking this can defeat me? How pathetic and laughable.”

After suppressing his laughter, the devil returned to calm, though his face no longer showed frivolity but complete indifference. He gazed at the starry sky, coldly mocking those two who had departed.

Whether he truly thought this way or was trying to cover up that unprecedented loss of composure.

Covering it up for himself to see.

“But I must admit, this trap is not bad—at least I can’t leave for now.” The man muttered to himself, looking toward the light hovering nearby.

That was the reason he could not leave.

He could not immediately go to the other shore, nor could he simply depart and temporarily avoid the present world’s sharp edge.

The former was naturally due to the trap set by the Lady and the sleeping old man, while the latter was because if he left, it would be equivalent to refusing the other shore that had extended an olive branch to him and, despite hesitation, still would not withdraw it but continued to observe.

That would truly sever the path.

The door to another world would absolutely never open twice for the same person.

Therefore, even though it was extremely dangerous, the devil would not leave. No one could restrict him—in fact, it was precisely his vision that nailed him to this place.

Presumably those two had calculated this point as well, which was why they violated the old covenant and acted decisively.

“Very well then. I will personally show you that all of this is futile.”

“I will kill those people, making all your and your follower’s expectations come to nothing. After that, I will come—I will still ascend to that supreme place.”

As the quiet words fell, the devil glanced once more at the starry sky.

Though he did not know which star the departed deity had become, she was surely among them.

Though she should have shed all emotions by now and no longer care about such things.

After finishing his soliloquy, the man on the throne withdrew his gaze and slowly sat up straight. His expression was no longer indifferent but gradually took on a rare violence.

No longer like an old-time gentleman, he had transformed back into that cold-blooded, murderous devil who would exterminate entire clans at will, back into the one who ruled over seas of blood, the true…

Pirate King, Captain Edward Roy.

He gazed at the dense forest directly before him, heavy with tree shadows, as if he could already see that figure rushing toward him, hear those increasingly clear, approaching footsteps.

Feel the blazing fire of revenge and the scent of death spread by the black blade drawing near.

Very near.

So the man drew a light breath, then slowly exhaled, the coldness in his pupils growing more intense.

He smiled like a devil and proclaimed like a king.

“Then come, child…”

“I’m waiting for you.”
