Chapter 619: Delicious! (Two-in-One)
Chapter 619: Delicious! (Two-in-One)
Beneath the gloomy sky, Yan Jing watched the Son of Chaos leave without pursuing him.
Killing the Son of Chaos would likely destroy the balance of this game.
The Son of Chaos was the hope of the entire Chaos faction.
At least, its public hope.
If something happened to the Son of Chaos...
Chaos would be forced to take action, whether it wanted to or not.
As a First Level Domain, if your strongest inheritor died, could you really just sit back and do nothing?
For the sake of appearances, they would have to act even if they didn't want to!
Not only would they have to act, they would have to make a good showing of it.
It was highly likely that a Demigod Realm expert would intervene.
This was not a situation Yan Jing wanted to see.
At least... not right now.
He needed to wait until he had the strength and confidence to handle a Demigod Realm expert.
"It's been a while, Officer."
Yan Jing walked toward the corner. Lu Miao stood there, clutching her right arm.
The shockwave from that recent strike had injured it.
She looked at Yan Jing, a flicker of complexity flashing across her eternally icy face.
He had grown stronger again.
Even though her luck had been absolutely heaven-defying—encountering a massive opportunity and inexplicably soaring from the Eighth Tier to the Tenth Tier during this recent Old Sin City mutation—she couldn't even fully block the residual might of his single strike.
"It's been a while."
Lu Miao took a deep breath.
"The token is already in your hands. If you want to gather tokens from other locations, you can go find An Ze. The type of token he holds is different from mine."
"Thank you."
Yan Jing nodded.
Of course he knew which locations held which types of tokens. More accurately, he had personally arranged who was stationed where.
But he had no intention of going right now.
"Is there a coffee shop nearby? Officer, how about I buy you a cup of coffee?"
After Yan Jing spoke, he looked at the stunned Lu Miao and smiled.
"Charge, charge, charge!"
The sound of Mao Si's charging bugle call rang in Chen Nian's ears once again.
Beneath his mask, a wry smile formed involuntarily on his lips.
Out of everyone he had ever met, the one who loved nagging the most was that old man.
But compared to Mao Si, that was simply child's play.
The two of them had just cleared a simple game and were preparing to head to the next one.
In just that short span of time, Mao Si had shouted "charge, charge, charge" at least eight times.
"Mr. Cat, aren't you tired?"
Chen Nian asked softly.
Yan Jing put his hands on his hips and laughed out loud.
"You have to keep a young mindset, Mr. Chen. Don't be as lifeless and dreary as my Pops."
As he spoke, Yan Jing glanced around, worried that his Papa Rat might overhear him.
Chen Nian remained noncommittal, reaching out to point into the distance.
"How about... we go check out that game?"
He figured this was the best way to get some peace and quiet.
Yan Jing looked in the direction Chen Nian pointed. It was the ground floor of a bakery, where a peculiar-looking boy sat inside.
"Alright, that's the one."
"Charge, charge, charge!"
Yan Jing said it for the ninth time.
The two of them walked into the bakery.
"Welcome!"
The boy stood up; he was only slightly taller than the counter.
But upon seeing Chen Nian, the boy froze for a moment.
"Mr.... Chen?"
The boy was a little uncertain. His interactions with Chen Nian back then hadn't been particularly deep, but because Chen Nian was always lingering by his boss's side and dressed quite uniquely, he had left a deep impression on him.
Chen Nian nodded and smiled.
"Hello, Mr. Eye."
"You can just call me One-Eye," One-Eye said, looking a little embarrassed to hear Chen Nian address him like that.
Even though there was no standard age of adulthood in the Sun-Swallowing Tower, being called "Mister" was indeed a first for him.
"Have a seat, have a seat. The game requires exactly five people. Now that the two of you are here, the game should start right away."
One-Eye pointed at five seats lined up in front of the table. An Old Man wearing a colorful robe sat in the far right seat. His hair was stark white, but his vibrant robes made him quite eye-catching.
Yan Jing jumped down from Chen Nian's shoulder and took the center seat.
"Can we order?"
Yan Jing looked at the menu on the table.
One-Eye awkwardly wiped his forehead.
"Actually, I'm not the owner of this shop. This is just a scenario setting."
"Alright... what a pity..."
Yan Jing crossed his two paws, his fingers twitching slightly.
"Then do you have alcohol?"
The moment the word 'alcohol' was spoken, Chen Nian and One-Eye both looked at Yan Jing.
Yan Jing blinked.
"Is that not allowed?"
"No, we just don't have any."
One-Eye pursed his lips.
He could have outright refused, but it seemed this coincidence struck a chord with a certain memory of his. He nodded and said, "Actually, I'm a waiter at a bar, but I only know how to mix one kind of drink. The boss usually handles the mixing, and I only fill in occasionally when she skips work. And as for the ingredients..."
He looked behind him at a box left by some unknown person, his expression turning a bit strange.
"It seems we actually do have them."
"It's fine. I want to try it."
Yan Jing said softly.
He crossed his paws and rested them on the table. In that instant, his entire demeanor seemed to change. The playful, bantering vibe inherent to Mao Si vanished completely. Chen Nian stared blankly at Yan Jing, spacing out for a moment.
"Okay, okay, please wait a moment."
Soon, One-Eye finished mixing a glass of alcohol and set it in front of Yan Jing.
"Enjoy."
One-Eye stretched out his hand and began wiping the table.
Yan Jing picked up the glass and took a light sip.
"Very good."
Yan Jing smiled.
"Thank you."
"I'm glad you like it."
Before his voice had even faded, the glass door outside snapped open.
Two figures walked in.
"Found him."
The two who entered were a man and a woman. The man had slicked-back hair and wore a trench coat, while the woman had a high ponytail and wore a long overcoat. Their facial features bore some resemblance to each other, but apart from that, they shared one other common trait.
They were far too perfect.
The two walked expressionlessly toward the table.
"Hello, you two."
One-Eye hadn't quite slipped out of his waiter persona yet, proactively greeting them.
But they didn't reply.
Or rather, they acted as if they hadn't seen One-Eye at all, their gazes locking onto Chen Nian.
"It's been a while, Fifth Brother."
Chen Nian's face remained calm.
"It's been a while, Eldest Brother, Eldest Sister."
"Mm."
Chen Qiuran nodded and smiled.
"I saw you hanging around this lower lifeform the whole time earlier, so I really couldn't find a chance to come chat with you."
"It couldn't be helped. You know your eldest brother is a germaphobe."
Chen Nian's face was calm.
"He is my friend, not some lower lifeform."
"Friend?"
Chen Qiuran burst into laughter, looking at Chen Xing beside him.
"Did you hear what this kid just said?"
Chen Xing's expression was cold.
"Let's just start."
Compared to Chen Qiuran, she wasn't even willing to speak a word to Chen Nian.
To her, the current Chen Nian was no different from a lower lifeform.
"Fine, fine. You really have no sense of fun."
Chen Qiuran chuckled and looked at Chen Nian.
"Fifth Brother, don't blame your eldest brother. Father said that we can't let you survive this time."
"You have to die in an accident."
"Otherwise, do you think this woman and I would ditch Second Brother just to come find you?"
Chen Nian remained unfazed.
"I know. I also have some things I'd like to say to Eldest Brother and Eldest Sister."
A dark gleam flashed through Chen Qiuran's eyes at those words. Then, he looked at One-Eye behind the table.
"Start."
Although One-Eye was very displeased with their attitude, he still nodded.
"We will begin."
Both his boss and the City Lord had instructed him earlier that, unless absolutely necessary, he shouldn't instigate conflict with these people.
"I'll now introduce the rules of this game."
"The game is called Bread Flavor."
"Next, I will mix several types out of five hundred different flours to make the bread. After tasting it, you must analyze its flavors."
"Whoever analyzes the most accurately will win this game."
"Interesting, very interesting."
Yan Jing seemed to snap out of his previous state and revert to his Mao Si persona. Hearing One-Eye's explanation, he began to exclaim loudly. Chen Xing frowned.
A second later, she raised her hand and slapped toward Yan Jing's right cheek.
To her, this cat was simply far too noisy.
Its chattering was getting on her nerves.
"Bang!!!"
Chen Xing's body flew backward, crashing directly into the pile of flour in the corner.
The entire bakery shook violently. If not for a barrier of light manifesting at the last moment, this single impact would have collapsed the whole building.
Chen Qiuran's pupils shrank.
He never expected that the one sent flying would actually be their family's resident tigress.
He looked at Yan Jing in the distance, only to see the palm of a giant beast materializing right behind that tiny cat's paw.
That palm was covered in a layer of dazzling golden fur and encircled by rings of pure energy. Just hanging quietly in the air, it exuded an indescribable, oppressive aura, as if it belonged to a titanic beast that absolutely could not be provoked.
Chen Qiuran took one look at it and found his breath catching for a second.
After a loud clatter, Chen Xing emerged from the messy debris.
She glared at Yan Jing, her eyes scarlet. That flawless face of hers now wore a look of near madness.
Being slapped in the face by a lower lifeform truly enraged her, and she wanted to retaliate immediately.
"You can try."
Yan Jing didn't even look at Chen Xing. He picked up his glass with one hand, took a sip, and narrowed his eyes.
"But you'll die. Don't say your Grandpa Cat didn't warn you."
The moment those words fell, an indescribably terrifying pressure suddenly erupted from Yan Jing's body.
A booming explosion seemed to echo simultaneously within everyone's hearts.
That terrifying pressure continuously climbed, eventually cresting the horizon and vaulting above the clouds, transforming into a massive silhouette.
"Thump! Thump! Thump!"
It sounded as if ancient drumbeats were rolling in from somewhere afar.
"Thump! Thump! Thump!"
Everyone in the shop heard it clearly—it was the sound of their own racing heartbeats.
Terror... a terror that defied description.
The current Mao Si suffocated any thought of resistance.
It was like...
A Deity.
Every strand of fur and every inch of skin radiated a potent divinity.
"Thud."
Chen Xing dropped hard on her rear. That eternally cold face of hers was completely drained of color, and her legs were trembling involuntarily. Yan Jing looked on impassively.
"Hurry up. Are you making a move or not?"
He withdrew his Divine State, turning back from a Deity into a black cat.
But...
Chen Xing stood up, her heart still pounding with lingering fear, and shakily walked over to her seat and sat down.
Her whole body was already drenched in cold sweat.
Her eyes remained fixed in a dead stare at the wall of bread behind One-Eye, as if she still hadn't recovered from the pressure just now.
Indeed, at this moment, other than Yan Jing, no one could shake off that scene.
That was, until Yan Jing reached out and knocked on the table.
One-Eye finally jolted awake as if from a dream. He pulled out various types of bread flours from under the table and arranged them in front of everyone.
"This is the Invincible Universe Chili Bread Flour. Its spiciness rivals the Inner World's top three Anikede peppers—yes, the Anikede peppers from the Sea of Flavor."
"This is the Super Awesome Super Awesome Super Badass Beef-Flavored Bread Flour. The bread it makes will genuinely make you feel like there's a cow standing right in front of you."
"This is the Utterly Terrifying Make-You-Pee-Your-Pants Bread Flour. It contains the taste of pure fear..."
One-Eye introduced every single type of bread flour to the group one by one.
Once he finished introducing all five hundred flours, One-Eye packed them back under the table.
"I'm going to start baking the bread."
One-Eye's muffled voice sounded from underneath the table.
Then...
There was a flurry of clattering sounds, followed by a long wait—fermenting, kneading, and finally, tossing the dough into the oven.
The group—a whole bunch of Tenth Tier powerhouses—just sat there and waited through the entire bread-making process.
No one felt sleepy.
If they ever did feel drowsy, that terrifying, soul-shaking scene from earlier would automatically jump to the forefront of their minds, adding quite a bit of spice to this long wait.
"Everyone will taste ten types of bread."
One-Eye finally brought the freshly baked bread and set it in front of them.
"Please analyze their flavors one by one."
"I will assign scores based on your results."
"Who wants to go first?"
He looked at the group.
Yan Jing stared at the ten variously shaped pieces of bread in front of him without saying a word.
He thought these ten rolls of bread looked a bit like ten balls.
If these ten pieces of bread were to suddenly roll onto the floor right now...
He could just chase after them...
Chen Nian didn't speak either. He looked at his older brother and sister, lost in his own thoughts.
The same went for Chen Qiuran and Chen Xing. Neither of them spoke.
"I'll go first."
Finally, the Old Man on the far right spoke up. He picked up a piece of bread and took a bite.
"The first bread is made from the Ultimate Exaggerated Cannot-Be-More-Exaggerated Terrifyingly Sweet Flour, the Miss-It-And-You-Will-Never-Find-It-Again Invincible Floral Flour, and the Everyone-Will-Love-It Chocolate Paired with Raw Milk Flour..."
The names of the flours poured from his mouth one after another.
The difficulty of this game actually lay in the fact that none of them had ever tasted the flavor of these flours before.
They could only judge based on the names.
And although they could use weird energy fluctuations to capture the process of One-Eye making the bread, there was no way to know exactly which pieces had been distributed to them.
But...
The Old Man, of course, had his own methods.
Very soon, he finished rattling off all the flour types.
One-Eye nodded. He didn't say it was right, nor did he say it was wrong; he merely gestured for the next person to continue.
Chen Qiuran glanced at the still somewhat-dazed Chen Xing. Finally, he gritted his teeth, opened his mouth, and continued this boring game.
A game like this couldn't even be considered a challenge to Tenth Tier powerhouses like them.
Smell, x-ray vision, weird energy fluctuations...
They had far too many methods to determine exactly what this bread was made of.
Therefore, after Chen Qiuran finished answering, his heart remained incredibly calm.
He knew it was impossible for him to get it wrong.
Those flours were sitting right there, and the guy across from him was someone who remained only at the Eighth Tier even after experiencing the Old Sin City mutation. It was impossible for him to pull any tricks right under his nose.
And he had already guessed that the Old Man definitely wouldn't answer incorrectly either.
For that reason, he even deliberately sped up his speaking pace, guessing that the final outcome might be determined by the speed of their answers.
If forced to say, he felt there was only one possible way he could lose.
He involuntarily glanced at Yan Jing beside him.
That was if this guy actually possessed the strength he had just displayed, and directly made a move to beat him to death.
That was what he thought, and that was what he was guarding against.
Right up until...
Yan Jing took a bite of the bread and let out a sigh of admiration:
"This is delicious."
