Chapter 211: Desire
Andong, who had learned his lesson and left the city early, was able to see the full extent of the strange phenomenon. It was grand and unstoppable.
Sean sat quietly not far away, recording everything before him. Bran was right; recording was the meaning of his existence. When he picked up pen and paper again, he felt peace. Neither danger nor serenity could shake him anymore. He was merely an observer, a recorder. Life and death would be frozen under his pen.
Sean’s calmness formed a stark contrast to the panic around him. Drawn by this, Andong walked behind Sean and watched the words flow from his pen. His mind gradually grew calm.
He saw a detachment from worldly affairs in Sean. This old scholar had already let go of everything and was now enjoying his remaining years to the fullest. This gave Andong a moment of clarity. “You met him?”
Sean kept writing and replied casually, “You could say so.”
“He knows everything?”
“Yes, I didn’t hide anything.”
Andong sighed. “Is this his revenge?”
“You and I are not worth mentioning.” Sean stopped writing, shaking his head with a wry smile, and pointed at the scene before them. “If this can be considered revenge, then it’s truly our luck.”
Andong frowned. “Apart from revenge, I can’t think of any other reason.”
Sean couldn’t help but laugh. “You hold great power and are used to making people fear you through punishment. But among the winds and clouds of this world, which storm was started by you? You are just an insignificant mortal.”
Sean’s words were too unreasonable. Andong’s expression changed completely, but he could do nothing. This old man had already given up on himself and only sought to live happily.
At this moment, the crown on Andong’s head and the royal power in his hands seemed insignificant. If he stayed any longer, this old fellow might say something more treasonous. Andong had no choice but to leave awkwardly.
Although the conversation with Sean was unpleasant, he learned that this was not Bran’s means of revenge. But so what? Andong still couldn’t find a way out of his predicament because he had no idea what Bran wanted to do.
Andong was worried. He looked at the surrounding lords and ministers, hoping they could solve his problems. But everyone avoided his gaze, whether intentionally or not.
Someone had already seen the wisp of gray smoke rising from the mountaintop yesterday, so Andong had already sent people to search there. He went with goodwill, hoping to talk and figure out Bran’s purpose.
The mountaintop was not large, nor was it good for hiding, but no trace of anyone was found there.
Bran! Andong cursed this bastard in his heart again. What kind of thing was it to act so quietly like this?
“Maybe we can let them try.” Someone hesitantly proposed an uncertain suggestion.
“Who?”
“Lui, and Jenny.”
“Them?” Andong shook his head. “Every person who went up there today was stronger than them.”
“Your Majesty, this is not about status or strength. It’s about whether that person wants to meet. We have repeatedly questioned what happened at the inn. Those people might have returned alive precisely because of the child Lui.” With a sigh, the person continued, “As for Jenny, it’s just to show our attitude.”
Andong was silent for a long time before sighing and saying, “Let them try tomorrow. I believe he won’t make things difficult for Jenny.”
…
The next day, Jenny and Lui arrived at the mountaintop carrying everyone’s hopes. They looked around, hoping to find something.
After turning her head a few times, Jenny secretly breathed a sigh of relief. She knew those people meant no good—a bunch of old scoundrels. But she had no power to resist. Even her father hadn’t spoken up for her. What else could she do?
Seeing the empty mountaintop, she returned to her carefree self and pretended to shout, “Is anyone here?”
After a long moment, she shouted again, “No one! Then we’re leaving.”
Then she tried to pull Lui away to escape, but unfortunately, she couldn’t move her. This made her a little anxious. She pulled slightly harder and pleaded, “Let’s go!”
“But, our mission…” Lui said uncertainly. “And I have some things I want to ask him.”
“There’s no one here. Ask him next time you meet.” Jenny just wanted to leave quickly. She had completed the task. If she ran back now, those old scoundrels wouldn’t say anything more.
Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. A voice sounded beside her ear. “Aren’t you a person?”
“No!” Jenny blurted out, then froze and didn’t dare move. But her eyes began darting around, trying to find the speaker.
The voice ignored her and turned to Lui. “What do you want to ask me?”
Lui felt strange. The voice was right beside her ear, but no figure appeared before her. She mustered her courage and said, “I bring greetings from His Majesty. We will do everything we can to help you.”
Beside her, Jenny unconsciously snorted through her nose, expressing the credibility of this statement with her actions.
“What do you want to ask me?” The voice sounded in Lui’s ear again. “Don’t mention your Majesty again. I’m not interested in him.”
Lui was clearly not used to this contempt for royal authority. Her reaction was a bit slow. After a while, she said, “Do you plan to destroy this city?”
“No. I hadn’t thought about it until you asked.”
The answer was so unexpected that she didn’t dare ask further.
After thinking for a moment, Lui continued, “Regarding our three clans, have you discovered anything?”
“Yes, we are indeed of the same origin, or distant relatives.”
Jenny’s eyes darted around, her curiosity piqued. “What are you talking about?”
Lui whispered to her about the conversation when they first met Bran. This made Jenny’s eyes light up. She couldn’t help but ask, “We are the same clan?”
“Perhaps, but we’ve been separated for too long and have developed many differences.”
Jenny tried to get closer. “No matter how long, we’re still the same clan, right?”
Bran chuckled lightly. “We no longer see each other as such, so we are no longer the same.”
Jenny looked wistful. “Recognition? I recognize you! I heard a young girl alone with a sword challenged the Demon Clan’s camp. Who would have thought she was one of my clansmen?”
Then she said shamelessly, “Since we’re all the same clan, you won’t harm us, right?”
