Chapter 304: News
Cursing the Pool of Foresight and the Prophet in his heart, Kano left the Sacred Mountain of the Dragon filled with regret and guilt.
Nita was right; he would walk towards death because it was the best release. Perhaps dying there wasn’t bad. He could get a glimpse of the reviving Desolate Continent before dying, witness another scene, and even leave his mark upon it.
Everyone died, right?
The current situation on the Desolate Continent was chaotic, yet Lily sat idle within Twinwing City.
At the border between the Bloody Plains and the Anya Kingdom, the Demon Clan’s camp remained intact. The dead transformed by Bran’s slaughter still wandered within it day after day. More and more dark energy gathered there, together with the lingering resentment from battles fought long ago.
Even bitter enemies couldn’t help feeling a twinge of pity when seeing the foe’s miserable state. Thus, this camp earned a new name – Rest. The fortress once built to block the Demon Clan, now because of this haunted area, gained another new name – Rest City.
Even in the blazing summer, the biting cold that pierced right to the core refused to lift within Rest City.
To facilitate communication with the Northlanders, Anya had stationed a new team of knights here.
Kurt stood helplessly on the city wall, gazing at the restless dead wandering over the Land of Rest.
After making a full circle, he was finally back here. Who would have thought the King would pardon them so easily and without any conditions? While hiding in Black Ridge, feeling each day drag like a year, the pardon documents had already spread everywhere.
Perhaps he had to be grateful to Bran. If Bran hadn’t gone stirring trouble in Lava City, angering everyone, the desertion incident might not have been resolved so readily. While compromises had been made among various parties, these private deals ultimately came to nothing.
He liked the name Rest City, because it originated from mouths like his, failures like him. From the moment they abandoned glory and duty and fled this place, they had died. Now, they were just a small group of soul-less walking corpses, drifting within this empty tomb.
That the Great Wizard Lily was stationed in Twinwing City was already known to everyone. The Anya Kingdom needed people with worldly experience to guard this place, needed someone who could act as a mouthpiece. So, Kurt and the others were dug up and thrown back here.
It wasn’t long after the turmoil in the southern sea spread across the Continent when a Northlander casually passed through that haunted land and approached the city. Kurt received him and made a small arrangement. A Snow Falcon would come every few days; urgent messages could be entrusted to it.
During casual talk, Kurt asked his question, “The dead… aren’t you scared of them?”
“They are servants of the Great Wizard, so servants of the Northlanders. Would you fear your own servants?”
Kurt had nothing to say, but it confirmed his suspicion – that haunted place was a barrier to stop outsiders from crossing the border.
Kurt had often been thinking lately: Stop whom? Anya People? If not for the movements on the Southern Coast, Kurt might have guessed the truth.
Time flew. Who could know what effects an unintentional action back then might bring? Bran, the one who started it all, had actually forgotten this place. His temperament hadn’t changed much. For him, the business here was long over. However, many others didn’t see it that way.
News about the Southern Coast became more frequent and detailed. Kurt began to ask himself: What if it wasn’t meant to stop Anya People? What were his shattered group of frightened birds worth stopping? Or, had the Great Wizard Bran already foreseen everything on the Southern Coast, foreseen their defeat and doom?
So Kurt took an unexpected action: he moved his family to Rest City. Kurt’s cowardice was known to all. If his breakdown hadn’t shaken the soldiers’ resolve first back then, the desertion within the city walls might not have happened so quickly. Thus, his abnormal move immediately drew his companions’ attention. Some began to frown deeply in thought; others had sudden realizations. Soon after, new families appeared in the city.
Now, various channels of news passed continuously through Kurt to Twinwing City, and the company of knights within the walls silently became his helpers.
The initial reports were normal. For example, the Amphibians of the Southern Coast frolicked there as if it were their own backyard. Their neighbors were also quite courteous, pulling back a hundred miles to avoid disturbing them. Yet those acting as if facing a formidable enemy were the countries hiding behind those ‘good’ neighbors.
But when secrets about the Anya Kingdom started appearing in the reports, it baffled Lily. A few days later, when Kurt’s humble request was placed before her, the truth became clear.
Kurt hoped to secure permission to build a small farm behind the Land of Rest to settle his family…
Unlike Bran’s indifference to the outside world, Lily at least possessed the famed boldness and directness of the Northlanders.
Standing on the wall, Kurt looked beyond the Land of Rest, his gaze falling on several large banners behind it. Those were Twinwing City’s banners, marking the farmland the Great Wizard Lily assigned to him.
Lily readily accepted Kurt’s pledge. She needed manpower, needed eyes and ears to help her understand this world more quickly.
Information about the Demon Clan was being gathered and organized through Yong’an City. The religious sect was spreading rapidly outward from Yong’an City, even starting to affect the few Demon Clan soldiers stationed around it.
Now, the West Coast was completely engulfed in thick fog. The Demon Clan set up layer upon layer of defenses outside the fog. But as the fog spread along the coast, their defensive lines grew thin. Scattered fighting occurred constantly…
Bran sent news again a short while ago, still in that tone of watching a show. The Dragon Riders on the East Coast remained anxious. Although the Amphibians had halted their advance, their unknown motive only made everyone more unsettled.
Only the Far North remained quiet. For Lily, and indeed for most on the Continent, that place remained unknown. Her younger sister should have already stepped into those lands, soon to disperse the cold fog shrouding it.
