Chapter 42: First Taste of Fame

Lin Yan drove the ox cart out of the Shen family's home. Shen Qingci had gone to the Government Office to handle the funeral arrangements for his family, and the two had agreed to return together in three days. Taking advantage of this time, he planned to bid farewell to Zhou Wanqing and Mei Ruoying, and buy some local specialties in the city along the way.

Lin Yan first went to the market in the east of the city. He bought two bags of rice, a bag of flour, a few pounds of salted meat, and picked out some long-lasting vegetables.

Next, he visited the house on Xikou Street. Zhou Wanqing wasn't there; only Mei Ruoying was alone in the courtyard, sun-drying medicinal herbs. She was still dressed in black, with a black-sheathed longsword hanging at her waist, but the disguise on her face was gone. Standing in the sunlight, she almost seemed to be glowing.

Seeing Lin Yan, she set down her bamboo drying tray and came forward to greet him.
