Chapter 52: Chapter 52: The Library
Paul led them across the guild grounds. The library was on the other side of the F rank area, near the edge of the compound. It was a large building. Three stories tall. Made of dark stone with tall windows and a heavy wooden door.
Daniel looked at it. Then at Lyra. Her eyes were wide. Her hands were clasped together. She was almost vibrating with excitement.
"Calm down," Daniel said.
"I can’t," Lyra said. "I’ve been waiting for this my whole life."
Paul pushed open the door. They stepped inside.
The library was massive.
Rows and rows of bookshelves stretched across the room. They were tall. Taller than Daniel. Taller than Paul. They reached almost to the ceiling. Thousands of books lined the shelves. Leather-bound. Cloth-bound. Some old and worn. Some new and crisp.
The smell of paper and ink filled the air. It was quiet. Peaceful. A few adventurers sat at tables, reading. Others browsed the shelves, searching for something.
Lyra stopped walking. Her mouth fell open.
"It’s... it’s beautiful," she whispered.
Daniel looked at her. At her wide eyes. At her trembling hands. At the tears forming in the corners of her eyes.
"It’s just a library," he said.
"It’s not just a library." Lyra turned to him. "It’s everything. It’s all the stories I could never read. All the worlds I could never visit. All the knowledge I could never have."
Daniel nodded. He understood. Sort of.
Paul walked to a desk near the entrance. An old woman sat behind it. She had silver hair pulled back in a bun and spectacles perched on her nose. She looked up when they approached.
"New members?" she asked.
Paul nodded. "They’re F rank. First time here."
The old woman looked at Daniel. Then at Lyra. Then at Fluffy, who was hiding behind Daniel’s leg.
"Rules," she said. "No food. No drinks. No loud noises. Books must be returned to their proper shelves. If you damage a book, you pay for it. With contribution points or coin. Understood?"
Daniel nodded. "Understood."
Lyra nodded eagerly. "Understood."
The old woman gestured at the shelves. "F rank members can access the first floor. E rank and above can access the second and third floors. The restricted section is on the third floor. Only B rank and above can enter."
Daniel looked at the shelves. "What’s on the first floor?"
"General knowledge. History. Geography. Basic combat manuals. Fiction." The old woman paused. "And novels."
Lyra’s eyes lit up. "Novels?"
"Yes. Over there." The old woman pointed toward the far corner. "The fiction section."
Lyra grabbed Daniel’s arm. "Let’s go."
She pulled him toward the corner. Fluffy followed, her ears twitching. Paul trailed behind, looking amused.
The fiction section was smaller than the rest of the library. A few shelves. A few hundred books. But to Lyra, it was paradise.
She let go of Daniel’s arm and walked toward the shelves. She ran her fingers over the spines. She pulled books out. She read the titles. She opened them. She read the first pages.
Daniel watched her. She was smiling. A real, genuine smile. The kind of smile that lit up her whole face.
"Find something you like?" he asked.
Lyra looked at him. She was holding a book. A thick one. Leather-bound. The title was embossed in gold.
"The Adventures of Sir Aldric," she read. "Volume One: The Dragon’s Lair."
Daniel nodded. "Sounds exciting."
"It is." Lyra’s voice was breathless. "I’ve heard of this one. Travelers used to talk about it. It’s about a knight who goes on quests. Fights dragons. Saves princesses. The whole thing."
Daniel smiled. "Then that’s the one."
Lyra hugged the book to her chest. "Really?"
"Really. I promised, remember?"
Lyra nodded. Her eyes were wet. "I remember."
Daniel looked around. He found a small table near a window. "Let’s sit. I’ll read it to you."
They sat down. Daniel took the book. Lyra sat beside him. Fluffy climbed onto the table and curled up. Paul sat across from them, his arms crossed.
Daniel opened the book. He cleared his throat. Then he started reading.
"Chapter One. The sun was setting over the kingdom of Aldoria. Sir Aldric, the bravest knight in all the land, stood at the edge of the Dark Forest. His sword was drawn. His armor gleamed. His heart was steady."
Lyra leaned in. Her eyes were closed. She was listening. Really listening. The way she used to listen when she was blind. Absorbing every word. Every detail. Every emotion.
Daniel continued. His voice was calm. Steady. He wasn’t a professional reader. But he did his best. He gave the characters different voices. He paused at dramatic moments. He sped up during action scenes.
Lyra smiled. She laughed. She gasped. She clutched Daniel’s arm during the scary parts.
Paul watched them. His expression was unreadable. After a while, he spoke.
"You know," he said quietly, "you’re not what I expected."
Daniel looked up from the book. "What do you mean?"
Paul shrugged. "When I first saw you, I thought you were just another pervert. Another guy who only cares about himself. But you’re not."
Daniel raised an eyebrow. "I’m not?"
"No." Paul leaned forward. "You care about her. You care about Fluffy. You keep your promises. You’re... decent."
Daniel stared at him. Then he laughed.
"Don’t tell anyone," he said. "I have a reputation to maintain."
Paul grinned. "Your secret’s safe with me."
Daniel turned back to the book. He kept reading. Lyra kept listening. Fluffy kept sleeping.
And for a while, everything was peaceful.
