Daniel woke slowly.

The room was quiet. The morning sun was streaming through the window. Paul was still asleep in his bed, snoring softly. Fluffy was curled up beside Daniel, her head resting on his arm, her ears twitching as she dreamed.

Daniel blinked. He stared at the ceiling. Something felt different. Something felt... new.

Then a notification appeared in front of his face.

Daniel stared at the screen. His mouth fell open.

He looked at the rabbit girl sleeping beside him. Her face was peaceful. Her breathing was slow. Her little bunny tail was twitching.

Fluffy’s mouth fell open. Her ears perked up. Her tail started wagging.

Daniel nodded. "Very special."

Fluffy’s eyes filled with tears. She threw her arms around Daniel. She hugged him tight.

"Fluffy is not useless," she whispered. "Fluffy is special."

Daniel hugged her back. "You were always special. The bond just made it official."

Fluffy cried into his shoulder. Happy tears. Relieved tears.

Paul stirred in his bed. He groaned. He rolled over.

"Can you two keep it down?" he mumbled. "Some of us are trying to sleep."

Daniel laughed. "Sorry."

Paul opened one eye. He looked at them. At Fluffy’s tear-streaked face. At Daniel’s smile.

"What did I miss?" he asked.

Daniel grinned. "Nothing much. Just a new bond."

Paul sat up. His eyes widened.

"A new bond? You bonded her?"

Daniel nodded. "Yeah."

Paul looked at Fluffy. At her glowing eyes. At her perked ears. At her wagging tail.

"She looks... different," he said.

"She is different." Daniel stood up. He stretched his arms. "She’s a Shadow Scout now."

Paul stared at him. "A what?"

"A Shadow Scout. It’s a unique class. She can become invisible. She has enhanced senses. She’s going to be amazing."

Paul blinked. Then he laughed.

"You," he said, "are full of surprises."

Daniel shrugged. "I try."

Fluffy stood up. She looked at her hands. At her body. At the room around her.

"Fluffy can see in the dark," she said. "Fluffy can hear everything. Fluffy can..."

She stopped. She focused. Then she disappeared.

Paul’s eyes widened. "What the—"

Fluffy reappeared behind him. She tapped his shoulder.

"Boo," she said.

Paul jumped. He spun around. His face was pale.

"How did you—"

Fluffy giggled. A happy, innocent giggle.

"Fluffy is shadow," she said. "Fluffy is sneaky."

Daniel laughed. "That’s my girl."

Paul looked at him. Then at Fluffy. Then back at him.

"I need to sit down," he said.

He sat down on his bed. He stared at the wall. He looked like he was questioning his entire life.

Daniel walked over to the window. He looked out at the guild grounds. The sun was rising. Adventurers were starting their day. The training grounds were filling up.

Today was a new day. A new beginning.

He had a harem. He had a gun. He had a partner. He had a friend. And now, he had a shadow.

He smiled.

"Alright," he said. "Let’s get some breakfast."
