Chapter 77: The Chicken Beast

Chapter 77: Chapter 77: The Chicken Beast

Brick Head was busy.

Very busy.

He walked through the crowd of scared civilians. His eyes were scanning. His head was turning. He was looking for something. Someone.

"Excuse me," he said to a young woman. "Can I have your panties?"

The woman stared at him. Her face went red. Then white. Then red again.

"What?" she hissed.

"Your panties," Brick said. "I need them. For hero reasons."

The woman slapped him.

Brick stumbled back. He rubbed his cheek. He didn’t look angry. He looked confused.

"Was that a no?" he asked.

The woman stormed away. She was muttering something under her breath. Something about perverts and idiots.

Brick shrugged. He moved on.

"Excuse me," he said to another woman. "Can I have your—"

Slap.

"Excuse me—"

Slap.

"Excuse—"

Slap.

Brick rubbed his cheek. It was red. Very red. But he didn’t stop.

"There has to be someone," he muttered. "Someone who understands. Someone who appreciates a hero’s needs."

Lyra watched him from a distance. She was sitting on a broken wall. Her gun was in her lap. Her eyes were tired.

She had given up trying to stop him. It was useless. The man was incorrigible.

"Why me?" she whispered. "Why did I get stuck with him?"

She looked at the sky. At the dark clouds. At the fading light.

"Daniel," she said. "Please hurry."

---

Then the monster appeared.

It walked out of the shadows. A humanoid figure. Tall. Muscular. But not human.

It had the body of a man. Arms. Legs. Torso. But its head was a bird’s head. Beak. Feathers. Eyes.

And it had wings. Large wings. Feathered wings. They stretched from its back. They flapped slowly. They created gusts of wind.

It was a mix of bird and human. A humanoid bird. The size of a full-grown man.

It walked toward them. Its taloned feet clicked on the stone. Its beak opened. It spoke.

"Co ko," it said. "I am not a bird. I am a chicken beast that has evolved to a new form. Co ko."

Brick Head saw it. His eyes widened. He pointed at it.

"HOLY DUCK!" he shouted. "IT’S A MONSTER BIRD!"

The crowd screamed. They ran. They hid. They cowered.

Brick held up his hands. "Everyone stay calm! Stay calm!"

He was shaking. His hands were trembling. His legs were wobbling.

"Stop shaking!" he shouted. "Who is shaking? Am not shaking! You’re shaking!"

The bird creature looked at him. Its beady eyes were cold. Unimpressed.

"Co ko," it said. "I am not a bird. I am a chicken beast that has evolved to a new form. Co ko."

Brick stopped shaking. He smiled. A wide, confident smile.

"A chicken?" he said. "I eat chickens for breakfast."

He charged.

His fist was raised. It was telegraphed. Obvious. Slow.

The bird creature didn’t even bother. It just raised its wing.

The wing connected with Brick’s body. The impact was thunderous. Brick flew backward. He crashed into a wall. The stone cracked. Dust fell.

The crowd gasped. Lyra face-palmed herself.

"Idiot," she muttered.

She stood up. She raised her gun. She aimed at the bird creature.

But then Brick stood up.

He was fine. No injuries. No blood. No broken bones. He looked like he hadn’t just been smashed into a wall.

"Ha!" he shouted. "That tickled!"

He charged again.

The bird creature raised its wing again. Another impact. Brick flew again. He crashed into another wall.

He stood up. He charged again.

The bird creature raised its wing. Another impact. Another crash.

Brick stood up. He charged again.

This happened over and over.

Each time, Brick charged. Each time, the bird creature hit him. Each time, Brick flew. Each time, Brick stood up.

The bird creature was getting annoyed. Its beady eyes were narrowing. Its beak was twitching.

"Co ko," it said. "Why aren’t you dying? Co ko."

Brick stopped. He looked at the bird creature. He took a heroic pose.

"Plot armor," he said.

The bird creature tilted its head. "Co ko?"

"Plot armor. At least, that’s what this dumb floating screen only I can see says."

The bird creature stared at him. "Co ko?"

"It also says my class is Protagonist. Whatever that means. And there’s a lot of dumb shit in this screen. But I just ignore it because a real hero survives through hard work."

The bird creature was confused. It didn’t know what this guy was talking about. Floating screen? Protagonist? Plot armor? None of it made sense.

Brick continued. He was looking at something in front of his face. Something only he could see.

"Oh man," he said. "Another dumb quest. It’s giving me an SSS rank talent. Why would I want whatever that is? They should tell whoever SSS rank is that I don’t want his talent. It might be something like sell my soul in return. Blah blah blah."

He paused. He tilted his head.

"Well, if it was a panty-stealing talent, then I would accept. But this one? Am just going to reject this one too."

He looked at the bird creature. He smiled.

"Alright, bird man. Let’s dance. Chicken style."

The bird creature didn’t wait.

It glided toward him. Its wings were spread. Its talons were extended. It was fast. Faster than before.

"WING SLICE!" it shouted.

Brick tilted his head.

"I know am dumb," he said. "But isn’t a skill called Wing Slice supposed to be for cutting wings? Why not name it Wing Blade?"

The wing was about to slice him in two.

Brick looked down. He saw something on the ground. A copper coin. Shiny. Gleaming.

"Oh, a coin!" he said.

He bent down to pick it up.

The wing passed over him. It missed. It hit the wall behind him. The wall exploded. The bird creature crashed into the debris.

Brick stood up. He looked at the coin in his hand. He frowned.

"It’s just a button," he said.

He threw it away. It flew toward the bird creature.

Then a skill activated.

[Plot Twist]

The button transformed. It glowed. It grew. It became a bomb.

The bird creature didn’t even look at it. To him, it was just a button. A stupid button.

The button-bomb hit the bird creature.

The bird creature exploded.

Bits of feather and flesh flew everywhere. The crowd screamed. Lyra stared. Brick smiled.

"Wow," he said. "That was lucky."

He looked at the floating screen only he could see.

[Quest Complete: Defeat the Chicken Beast]

[Reward: SSS Rank Talent - Luck of the Dumb]

Brick read the words. He frowned.

"Luck of the Dumb?" he muttered. "What kind of talent is that?"

He shrugged. He dismissed the screen.

"Whatever," he said. "I don’t need it. I have plot armor."

He turned to the crowd. He struck a pose.

"Fear not, citizens!" he shouted. "The monster is defeated! Thanks to me! Sir Brick Head! The greatest hero in all the land!"

The crowd stared at him. They didn’t cheer. They didn’t clap. They just stared.

Lyra sighed. She lowered her gun. She shook her head.

"Daniel," she whispered. "Please come back. I can’t deal with this alone."
