Volume 1, Chapter 1 – The Villain Boss? I Can’t Do This Job

“Princess, what’s wrong?”

A gentle voice sounded in her ear.

Chen Anran raised his right hand and pressed it against his groggy head. Even now, his whole mind was still in a daze. He felt dizzy and awful, with a nauseating urge to throw up.

“Princess?”

The voice came again, this time tinged with urgency.

Who was speaking?

Chen Anran was bewildered. Could everything that had just happened have been a dream?

He struggled to open his heavy, exhausted eyes. His vision was blurry at first, but Chen Anran quickly adjusted to the soft light around him.

The moment he got a clear look at his surroundings, he froze in shock.

What met his eyes was an extremely luxurious room. The walls were coated in paint that shimmered like starlight, and bright lengths of cloth hung down from the ceiling. It had a vaguely East-meets-West feel to it, but the combination was a little crude. It wasn’t breathtakingly beautiful, though it was passable.

In this somewhat old-fashioned room, Chen Anran found himself sitting on a soft sofa, staring blankly at the cup on the tea table.

And the one who had just called out to him was a young girl in a white guard uniform.

“Huh? What’s going on? Didn’t I just get blown to death by an exploding secondhand monitor?” Chen Anran couldn’t make heads or tails of the situation. His head was throbbing badly, as though a lot of extra stuff had suddenly been crammed into it.

Princess, pirates, supreme bounty… what was all this supposed to be?

For a moment, Chen Anran just sat there dumbly.

Had he been dreaming the whole time? Was getting blown up a dream, and was this still a dream too?

“Your Highness?”

The pretty guard girl called out again from beside him.

Huh!

Princess?

Are you calling me?

Chen Anran lifted his head in surprise and met the guard girl’s eyes.

A title as lofty and exalted as princess was usually attached to women, wasn’t it? So why was this guard girl calling me that…

Holy shit!

Chen Anran lowered his head and nearly cried out in fright.

Rolling hills, two flashes of white at the neckline, a swaying skirt. One look was enough to tell this was a girl’s body.

Wait, is this body mine?

In shock, Chen Anran put a hand on his chest and squeezed. It hurt a little. So it really was.

“Princess!” The guard girl was startled by Chen Anran’s action.

“Ah!”

Only then did Chen Anran realize he had just done something like that in front of someone else.

What the hell was going on here?

“You can leave first.” Drained and overwhelmed, Chen Anran spoke, and what came out was a soft, clear voice.

I turned into a woman. This has to be fake. Fake, fake, all fake. There’s no way I transformed, hahaha…

The guard girl nodded, obeyed the order, and left the room.

I’m done for, I’m done for. Chen Anran flopped onto the sofa, then spotted a huge standing mirror in the corner and immediately scrambled back up, hurrying over to it.

A pretty young girl appeared in the mirror.

Her flaxen hair was slightly wavy and hung loose instead of being tied up. Then there was the face, the chest, the waist, the legs. Wasn’t this the exact same character Chen Anran had spent half an hour creating in Night of the Stars, Anran?!

The outfit had changed, though. A princess dress. Noble, practical, and judging by the material…

Super wear-resistant!

Dejected, Chen Anran sat down, only to discover in shock that she could very easily perform the legendary duck-sit technique 1 Also known as Wariza/W-sitting . .

So, excited, Chen Anran followed it up with the salteddead-fish sprawl.

I transformed.

In some ways, this was pretty great, but life was already impossible now.

I can’t go on like this!

Screw this, screw this!

Chen Anran suddenly curled up and clutched her head. Just now, a torrent of chaotic information had erupted in her mind, and the impact made her head feel like it was splitting apart.

After quite a while, Chen Anran finally regained consciousness, her eyes unfocused, like she had been completely broken.

In fact, she realized that fate really had broken her.

Anran. That was the name of this body now.

As for her identity, she was the interstellar criminal ranked sixth on the Supreme Starry Sky Bounty List, the captain of the Red Spider Lily Space Pirate Crew, and was universally addressed by her subordinates as Princess. The guard girl from before was Yulianna, captain of her personal guard unit.

But none of that was the key point. The key point was that Anran was an NPC in Night of the Stars.

“I transmigrated into the game?” Anran was stunned.

The flood of information that had suddenly appeared in her mind made her eyes widen like a shocked salted fish.

Night of the Stars, this mad age of the great cosmos.

Night of the Stars, the super online game that had burst onto the scene.

Night of the Stars, the “gold rush” known as humanity’s second world.

This was a super online game with the same name and the same theme as the one Anran had registered in before, but on a completely different technological level.

In the real world, although it had not yet been officially released, Night of the Stars had already caused a massive uproar across the globe after two closed beta tests. Its popularity was unprecedented, and the attention it drew had reportedly even made two small countries call a ceasefire.

It was a revolutionary online game built with countless brand-new technologies. A boundless interstellar map, innumerable development paths, a fully realistic interstellar age, and an in-game time ratio of 10:1 compared to reality. Any single one of those features was enough to drive people wild.

This was humanity’s second world!

Just ten days ago, Night of the Stars announced that its official open beta would begin in half a month. The new era was finally about to arrive.

The starry sky, the journey countless people longed for.

It was hope, it was dreams, it was freedom, it was yearning, it was boob—

Smack smack smack!

What a scam!

Anran struggled and slapped the floor hard a few times. What did any of those incredibly tempting slogans have to do with her? She wasn’t a player. She was a native, an NPC, an NPC with only one life.

More importantly, she was an NPC from the evil camp, a famous BOSS.

And what were BOSSes in games for? Did that even need to be said?

To be killed, of course. To be farmed.

A high-risk profession. That was what it meant to be a boss in a game.

If things followed the plot, then the ending of a villain boss seemed already set in stone.

Getting killed was inevitable.

But in the completely open-world Night of the Stars, a boss’s fate did not necessarily have to be certain death. He or she might be able to strike a deal with players and gain a chance to keep barely surviving. Or maybe they could hide somewhere players would never find.

I’ve got money, ships, and people. How could I just sit around and wait to die? Kill… kill my ass.

First, I need to find a place to hide!

Anran made her decision at once.

The villain boss? I can’t do this job.

The salted fish who had found hope flipped over and sprang to her feet.

“One-minute countdown begins now: 59, 58, 57…”

A prompt suddenly sounded beside her. Anran looked around in confusion. A one-minute countdown? What was that supposed to mean? Was the spaceship about to explode?

Before she knew it, a status panel had also appeared in front of her eyes.
