Volume 2, Chapter 23 – [This Cake Is Poisonous!] Version 2-0
“We didn’t find anyone, Captain!” the subordinate searching the house reported to Wilson.
Wilson’s expression did not change. He picked up a green pastry from the table and stuffed it into his mouth.
It was as green as jade. The color alone was enough to whet the appetite.
Each pastry was only about half the size of Wilson’s fist. He opened his mouth and swallowed the whole thing with ease.
A little cold.
Wilson thought to himself that it had already gone cold, but since it was only meant to fill his stomach, there was no need to be so particular.
He began chewing the pastry in his mouth.
Though the little pastry was cool, it was still soft. The moment Wilson bit into it, it crumbled apart, and the fragrance of mung beans instantly spread through his mouth.
The soft yet not overly rich taste made Wilson raise an eyebrow.
The flavor was unexpectedly good. It made you want another one after finishing the first.
The place she lived in might be shabby, but with a television and food like this, it seemed this woman knew how to enjoy life.
Wilson swallowed the mung bean cake.
“Captain, there’s no one in the kitchen either!”
Another man came back to report to Wilson.
Wilson nodded and reached out to take another pastry from the table.
There were ten in total on the plate.
Chew, chew…
“Captain, there’s no one in the toilet either!”
Wilson said nothing and silently continued chewing his pastry.
The taste was good, and it filled the stomach. Other than being a bit cold, the flaw was hardly worth mentioning.

“Captain, we didn’t find anyone in the yard either!” The last two subordinates walked in from outside.
Wilson set his gun against the table and lifted his head. The structure of this house was very simple. The beam overhead was clearly too thin to hide anyone.
Was the person not home?
Wilson looked around.
The war had already broken out. If she had run away ahead of time, that would make things troublesome.
How were they supposed to find someone in this panicked crowd?
“Go check the roof too,” Wilson said.
They could not afford to miss any place.
“Yes!” One man turned and went out at once.
Wilson’s gaze swept over the faces of the remaining four. “Have something to eat. None of us has had anything since this morning.”
The four of them did not move.
When no one stepped forward, Wilson spoke again. “Don’t be shy. These pastries taste pretty good.”
Since Wilson had already said that much, the others stopped holding back and each grabbed a pastry, preparing to put it in their mouths.
Wilson picked up another pastry from the three remaining on the plate and was just about to take a bite. But the moment it reached his lips, his expression changed abruptly.
“Captain, what’s wrong?”
Wilson slowly lifted the hand that had been resting on his pistol and pressed it against his chest. His eyes gradually widened, and his expression suddenly turned twisted.
“This cake…”
Wilson’s right hand trembled, and the pastry he was holding dropped onto the tabletop. His steps faltered, and his right hand immediately braced itself against the table.
“It’s poisoned!!!”
“Captain!”

The sudden scene terrified the men, and they immediately threw away the pastries in their hands.
One of them had eaten quickly and had already swallowed his. The moment he saw Wilson’s condition, his face turned pale with fright, and he ran to the toilet and started gagging violently. “Bleurgh…”
“Ugh…”
Wilson felt as if his body had been hollowed out. A huge chunk of his strength seemed to have been ripped away all at once. Every muscle in his body stiffened, yet he had no strength at all. He was just about to slide to the floor.
Fortunately, a pair of strong arms reached out in time. Those powerful hands slipped under Wilson’s armpits and held up his limp body.
“Captain, Captain!” The subordinate holding him up was named Rabion. He shouted Wilson’s name, his eyes full of panic.
The other two also hurried over.
This is bad, this is bad.
Hearing the shouts inside the house, Stowe, who had been checking outside, rushed in as well. The moment he saw Wilson’s limp body, he froze in shock. “What happened to the Captain?”
Rabion said in a low voice, “The Captain ate one of the pastries on the table. He was poisoned.”
“Poisoned?”
Holy shit.
Stowe stood there dumbfounded for a moment, then immediately rushed into the kitchen, grabbed a ladle from the water jar, scooped up a large dipperful of water, and ran back out.
“Quick, quick, quick! Turn the Captain over!”
Stowe shouted.
Rabion and the others hurried to do as he said. Stowe began pouring water into Wilson’s mouth while patting him on the back.
“Wugh!” Wilson let out a strange choking sound.
If Anran or some player had been here, they definitely would have seen the constant stream of -15, -15 floating over Wilson’s head.
With everyone working together and a flurry of frantic effort, Wilson finally… stopped struggling.

The artillery had not stopped. The smoke of battle was still in the air.
Stowe stood frozen for a moment, then threw aside the ladle and tremblingly reached a hand toward Wilson’s nose.
Rabion and the other two stared at Stowe with burning eyes.
Stowe let out a sigh and shook his head.
There was no saving him.
“Captain!” Rabion shouted.
Stowe and the other two all fell silent.
The mission had failed before it had even truly begun, and their captain had already died. They had only managed to find one address, yet the captain had died here in such a baffling, meaningless way.
“Where’s Kane?” Stowe said.
“Kane?”
“I saw him go into the toilet just now.”
“Why did he go into the toilet?”
Stowe frowned. The captain was dead, and at a time like this, what the hell was Kane doing?
He strode quickly into the toilet, only to see Kane collapsed face-first toward the toilet bowl.
“Kane!” Stowe roared.
“What happened? What happened?”
Apart from Rabion, the other two hurried in at once.
…
In the combined living room and bedroom of Anran’s house, Wilson and Kane were lying there side by side in neat order.
Wilson was beyond saving, but Kane was still a little better off. Since he had eaten less, he still had a faint breath left in him.

Rabion remained silent, while Stowe had vaguely become the group’s leader.
“Logically, the other side shouldn’t have known we were coming,” Stowe said. “These pastries were cold too. They don’t look specially prepared. Unless…”
“Unless what?” Rabion asked.
Stowe said in a heavy voice, “Unless that local thug betrayed us and had already leaked our information to the person living here.”
The moment Rabion heard this, he became agitated. “Fine then! I’ll make him pay with his life for the Captain!”
He turned and was about to rush outside.
Stowe quickly grabbed Rabion.
“Not yet. If we’re going to act, we act together.”
With Stowe and the others trying to calm him down, Rabion finally managed to hold on to a shred of reason.
Taking Wilson and Kane with them, they headed toward Little Gold Tooth’s base. Before leaving, they did not forget to smash things up, destroying Anran’s television and hand-cranked juicer.
With Morningstar backing them, they were not afraid of Little Gold Tooth at all.
…
“I’ve been wronged, bosses! How would I dare do something like that? And about the poisoned cakes, no one could guarantee Boss Wilson would actually eat one, right? Who would be so bored they’d scheme over something like that on purpose?” Little Gold Tooth complained bitterly.
What he said did make some sense. Could it really have just been an accident?
Stowe asked, “We didn’t find that woman. Do you have any other information here?”
“Yes, yes, yes.” Little Gold Tooth nodded repeatedly like a pecking chicken. “There was one thing I forgot to mention just now. That girl has been working at Colin’s Repair Shop lately.”
Little Gold Tooth pointed at a spot on the map.
“Colin’s Repair Shop?”
Stowe pondered for a moment, then waved his hand. “Move! We’re going to avenge the Captain!”
