Chapter 49: Bo Le
Chapter 49: Bo Le
“Being recognized as a first-level Magic Apprentice by the Branch President” and “passing the assessment to become an official first-level Magic Apprentice” — these two identities actually had subtle differences in the records of the Mages Guild, but Luo Yan didn’t care about that right now. All he needed was an identity as a Wizard.
A first-level Magic Apprentice might be unremarkable, but he was still a proper, legitimate Wizard!
When he heard Abraham come in to report that all the procedures had been completed, Branch President Wes Anseld said to Luo Yan with a grin, “Alright, little guy, come on~~ I’ll take you to collect your various allowances!”
The Branch President personally leading the way? What kind of honor was that?! The hall immediately buzzed with commotion again. Archmage Wes Anseld looked round-faced and genial, but in reality he was a man of principle. Since becoming the Branch President of the Lons Pompey City branch of the Mages Guild, this kind of thing had apparently only happened three times in total.
But who would have thought that while Abraham and all the examinees in the hall were staring at Luo Yan with envy, jealousy, and resentment, the object of all that envy and jealousy actually waved his hand and said, “No need, no need~~ Grandpa President, you walk too slowly. I still have things to do later, so I’ll just go get them myself! Goodbye, Grandpa President!!”
Without even waiting for Branch President Wes Anseld to respond, Luo Yan scooped up the little Pinecone Bear, grabbed Isaiah, and ran out the door, leaving everyone frozen in place. The hall fell completely silent!!
Alright, alright~~ there had been too many surprising things today, and after being surprised again and again, one just got used to it…
But this time, even Branch President Wes Anseld was somewhat stunned. It took him four or five seconds to react. Watching the little guy sprinting away, Wes Anseld couldn’t help but shake his head and chuckle, muttering, “This little rascal.” Then he quickly chased after him.
When he reached the hall, he saw Luo Yan leaning over the front desk, waving his little hand and saying something to the receptionist. Wes Anseld couldn’t help but smile slightly. But when he took a closer look at that receptionist, he was suddenly taken aback: “Why is Annia here?”
While he was thinking, he had already approached the counter, and from a distance he heard Luo Yan say in a clear voice, “Ma’am, I’ve already filled out all the documents you mentioned. I still have things to do later, so can you give me my professional badge now?”
Ma’am?! Hearing Luo Yan address Annia, who was not even twenty years old, with the word “ma’am” — even Wes Anseld, who had seen all kinds of things in his life, couldn’t help but break out in a cold sweat. Truly, children say the darndest things. Children say the darndest things.
Fortunately, Annia’s attitude remained very gentle when she heard this. She didn’t fly into a rage at all. Instead, she quickly pulled out a large pile of items from behind the counter, and then said softly, “Alright, Mr. Luo Yan, this is your professional badge, and these… these are some material allowances provided to you by the Mages Guild, including a full set of apprentice robes and a standard apprentice wand. As for the ten Gold Plangs of living allowance provided by the Empire, they have already been transferred to your account. Please go to the nearest bank to check.”
Another wave of cold sweat — she actually said “Mr.”…
Hearing this, Luo Yan couldn’t wait to “snatch” the professional badge over, then tossed all the other things into Isaiah’s hands. He nodded and said in a clear voice, “Alright then, thank you, ma’am. See you next time!”
Annia quickly said, “Ah, sir, I still need to introduce to you the various rights and obligations that a first-level Magic Apprentice is entitled to. Also, there will be an Imperial Baronet conferment ceremony later…”
Before she could finish, Luo Yan interrupted, “Thank you, ma’am, but let’s talk about those rights, obligations, and that ceremony some other time. I still have things to do, so I’ll be going now!”
With that, Luo Yan waved his hand and hurriedly ran out the door with Isaiah, leaving Annia standing there dumbfounded… In all these years, she had truly never heard of anyone who dared to just toss aside a conferment ceremony like that!!
On the other side, seeing this scene, Branch President Wes Anseld actually quite appreciated Luo Yan’s behavior. He had always believed that a Wizard should focus on the pursuit of truth, and that other things like status and money were merely external possessions that should not become the goals a Wizard cared about.
In fact, Luo Yan really didn’t care. And it wasn’t just him — even the Imperial officials probably didn’t care much either. Back when Isaiah Thomas had been conferred the title of Imperial Baronet, there hadn’t seemed to be any special ceremony, had there? A mere baronet, in the eyes of the Empire, really wasn’t much of a dish…
Watching Luo Yan quickly disappear through the main entrance, Branch President Wes Anseld narrowed his eyes thoughtfully. Just then, Mosla, the chief executive of the branch who was known as “Lance Pompeii’s Loyal Hound,” hurried over upon hearing the news. Seeing the Branch President standing in the hall, he silently moved up beside him from behind.
The Branch President didn’t turn to look at the chief executive. He simply said calmly, “Have someone follow him and keep an eye on things. If the little guy needs help, help him sort it out.”
Mosla was slightly taken aback at this, but he raised no objection at all. He immediately walked over to Annia, the third-level Magicist who was temporarily serving as the front desk receptionist, and whispered a few words to her. After hearing his instructions, Annia also showed a surprised expression, but she quickly nodded and got up to head toward the door.
Seeing this, Abraham, who had been following beside Branch President Wes Anseld, hesitated for a moment before stepping forward and saying respectfully, “Honored Master Wes Anseld, um… about what happened in the assessment hall earlier…”
Before he could finish, Branch President Wes Anseld waved his hand and said, “Alright, you don’t need to say anything. I saw everything that happened just now.”
With that, Wes Anseld turned his head and quietly looked at Abraham. Though he said nothing, it made Abraham feel a chill run down his spine. He immediately lowered his head and stepped back, not daring to say another word.
Turning around silently, Archmage Wes Anseld couldn’t help but sigh inwardly — Mosla’s choice was correct, having Annia rather than Abraham keep an eye on that little guy… Although Vice Branch President William Smoya thought highly of this Abraham, believing him to be diligent and hardworking, a rare good student, Wes Anseld himself didn’t think so.
Wes Anseld admitted that he had never seen anyone more hardworking than this Abraham. He also had enough talent. But his capacity was simply too small. If he couldn’t correct his narrow perspective and develop a broad mind, how could he steadily advance on the path of seeking truth?
Over the years, Wes Anseld had seen far too many gifted talents lose their way on this path…
