Chapter 199: Self-Discipline of Medical Students

Xie Wanying hesitated to spend her senior brother’s money.

Another person joined them and said, “It’s not Huang Zhilei’s money; it’s the hospital-issued meal card. Feel free to order.”

Xie Wanying and Huang Zhilei turned to see Zhou Junpeng.

“Why are you here?” Huang Zhilei questioned, as of late, this fellow seemed to be hovering around like an unwanted presence.

“I brought a patient for a CT scan, and I stopped by to have lunch,” Zhou Junpeng replied.

Upon hearing that the patient had undergone a CT scan, both Huang Zhilei and Xie Wanying were curious about the results. So, the three of them sat down to have lunch.

“How did the scan go?” Huang Zhilei asked.

“The results are with the attending physician, not with me. You can’t expect a written report from the CT room so quickly,” Zhou Junpeng explained.

“But you were there, you must have seen something,” Huang Zhilei persisted.

“In general, her assumptions seem to be correct,” Zhou Junpeng said, glancing at Xie Wanying.

In other words, his junior sister’s assessment was accurate. Huang Zhilei was quite pleased and discreetly clenched his excited fist.

Xie Wanying focused on her meal, lowering her head.

The other two watched her eat. They were surprised to see a female colleague with a portion of food on her plate that was comparable to what the two men had ordered.

Eating is about replenishing energy, and the amount one consumes should match their expenditure. Overeating can lead to excess weight gain, while eating too little can result in inadequate nutrition. Although this concept may seem simple, very few people can accurately adjust their nutritional intake according to their body’s needs.

This requires a high degree of self-discipline.

Medical students, in particular, have high energy demands. Teachers often assign them various tasks, and aside from the physical labor involved, the mental strain is significant. Any medical student knows that mental exertion, also known as intellectual labor, can be quite energy-draining.

Apart from work, medical students and doctors need to maintain physical fitness. Having a healthy body allows them to care for patients instead of requiring care themselves. Physical exercise also consumes energy.

Some medical students deliberately restrict their food intake to maintain an attractive physique, eating less. However, they may encounter occasional clinical work that is physically demanding, leading to compensatory weight gain. This phenomenon is common among both male and female medical students. Essentially, medical students with their medical knowledge often find it challenging not to follow popular dietary trends.

To maintain a good physique, medical students must understand how to eat and exercise appropriately. Maintaining a regular diet to cope with times of high clinical energy expenditure is necessary, and the rest of the time should be devoted to exercise.

The problem is that clinical work, study, and exams are exhausting, and adding exercise on top of that can be very challenging. Most medical students, including some working doctors, struggle to achieve this.

Those who can are truly exceptional and often become experts because their willpower exceeds that of the average person.

Xie Wanying’s plate had a lot of food, but she chewed slowly, taking her time with each bite and chewing thoroughly. Properly chewing food ensures that the digestive system is not overburdened.

Watching her eat, Zhou Junpeng commented, “Is she like Dr. Fu, preferring to eat alone?”

Eating alone without conversation allows one to focus entirely on the meal. However, this can make them appear antisocial to others. This is why Dr. Fu Xinheng had earned the nickname “Robot” – because who needs to chat while eating?

Hearing Zhou Junpeng’s comment, Huang Zhilei was not pleased. “Who said that? She has had several meals with us.”

Even though they were often quiet while eating, Huang Zhilei felt that his senior brotherDr. Cao, was not very talkative during meals, which often led him to eat without much conversation.
