Chapter 242: She's So Young
Chapter 242: She's So Young
Liu Chengran took Xie Wanying’s notes from each patient’s file, as per his superior’s orders, and put them in his pocket to review in the operating room.
While waiting for the teachers to return and take her to change dressings, Xie Wanying reviewed the dressing procedures. As she was preparing the necessary supplies, the head nurse approached her.
“Dr. Xie, right?” the nurse asked warmly.
“Yes, that’s me, Teacher,” Xie Wanying replied.
Seeing her polite demeanor, the head nurse relaxed and said, “If you ever need any help from the nurses, just let us know. I’ve informed the others.”
Xie Wanying understood the head nurse was trying to build a good relationship with her. She replied, “I always call the nurses ‘sister’ when I’m in the emergency room.”
The head nurse beamed, “You’re so young, probably just over twenty. It’s fine to call us ‘sister.’ How old are you?”
“I’m twenty-one.”
Luo Yanfen, passing by the nurses’ station, overheard and quickly walked forward. The two male doctoral students following her seemed to understand her urgency.
A twenty-one-year-old intern?
When they entered the office, someone revealed, “I heard she’s an accelerated student from an eight-year program, set to graduate with a PhD in two years.”
So, she wasn’t an undergraduate but a PhD student. The realization hit Luo Yanfen and her team like a thunderbolt.
“I’m twenty-eight,” Luo Yanfen mumbled in disbelief as she sat down.
At twenty-eight, she was only in her second year of the PhD program, while Xie Wanying, at twenty-one, was already doing clinical internships. The age and experience gap felt overwhelming.
If Xie Wanying had been an underperforming intern, Luo Yanfen wouldn’t have felt so pressured. But just within a single afternoon, Xie Wanying had made her look inept.
The teachers looked at them as if they were clueless.
Before Xie Wanying’s arrival, their performance had been deemed acceptable. Now, with Xie Wanying’s strong comparison, their skills seemed inadequate.
Luo Yanfen, feeling dejected, turned to the two male doctoral students. “Why didn’t you two speak up earlier? We should have clarified her intentions. Look at how the teachers see us now. Do you think she’s trying to grab the teachers’ attention?”
The two male doctoral students stood silently, unsure of what to do.
Getting into a PhD program at Guoxie was already extremely difficult, often requiring years of experience. Facing a younger intern who outshines them in clinical practice only added to their stress.
Luo Yanfen felt more pressure, as female medical students were often compared more harshly. The two male students decided to stay quiet.
Seeing them not speak up, Luo Yanfen scorned, understanding their intentions.
In clinical settings, female students often face challenges that male students don’t, such as physical strength and practical skills.
“Why not apply to switch teams?” someone offered a kind suggestion when the teachers were absent. “Being compared to her will be tough. Have you learned anything useful from this team?”
Everyone knew that Tan Kelin wasn’t fond of mentoring students. Whether it was luck or misfortune to join this team was unclear. However, learning Tan Kelin’s unique surgical skills secretly was an opportunity they didn’t want to miss. With only a month in the rotation, missing out on learning in the operating room would be a huge loss.
