Chapter 263: Dr. Tan’s Legendary Skills
Chapter 263: Dr. Tan’s Legendary Skills
After the students left, Tan Kelin spoke to his team. “The two doctors covering emergency duty and attending the conference will return next week. Other than Zhang Haofan, who will continue his in-hospital training.”
Their team had been operating with fewer staff than usual, so hearing that the doctors would be back was a huge relief for Sun Yubo. He could finally stop running himself ragged, handling everything.
Still, Sun Yubo couldn’t resist asking, “Can Xie Wanying be officially assigned under my supervision?”
“Keep dreaming,” Tan Kelin replied coldly, instantly shattering his hopes.
Clearly, someone as capable as Xie Wanying, practically superhuman in her multitasking, wouldn’t be under his authority. Sun Yubo could only watch in envy.
Liu Chengran smirked and gave his junior a light slap on the head. “Seriously, stop fantasizing.”
After receiving instructions to take over Beds 3 and 7, Xie Wanying immediately set to work. She located the patients’ records, wrote prescriptions, and updated medical notes—typical responsibilities for an intern managing patient beds.
That morning, while the three PhD candidates skipped a minor surgery to focus on other tasks, Tan Kelin simply checked in briefly on the procedure before moving on to his other responsibilities.
In the afternoon, the patient in Bed 7 was scheduled for a laparoscopic surgery. Xie Wanying personally escorted the patient to the operating room.
Laparoscopic surgery, praised for its minimal invasiveness and quicker recovery times, had become increasingly popular with patients. However, it also required a higher level of technical skill from surgeons.
Not all surgeons excelled at traditional open and laparoscopic procedures since the techniques differed. Yet, Tan Kelin’s laparoscopic skills were reputed to be exceptional.
Although the three doctoral candidates frequently praised Dr. Tan’s abilities, they couldn’t offer concrete examples, implying that much of what they knew was second-hand hearsay.
Inside the operating room, Xie Wanying overheard staff discussing it further.
“Is Director Lu here to consult with Dr. Tan?”
“I heard Director Lu’s relative insisted on having a laparoscopic procedure, but Director Lu isn’t particularly skilled at it.”
“How is that possible? He’s the chief of colorectal surgery. Can’t someone from his own department handle it?”
“Apparently, the issue is a particularly tricky area. Their team tried but couldn’t manage it and said open surgery was the only option.”
The departments of colorectal surgery and general surgery were somewhat competitive. If it hadn’t been for the personal connection between Director Lu and his relative, he likely wouldn’t have sought outside help.
To save face and address the challenge, Director Lu likely coordinated with Dr. Shen from General Surgery Two to involve Tan Kelin.
Why Dr Tan specifically?
This stemmed from an old practice in China where patients could directly choose their surgeon, provided they paid extra. While convenient for patients, it stifled the development of less-experienced doctors. To address this, reforms were introduced so that senior doctors would oversee surgeries while junior surgeons handled the actual procedures under supervision. These reforms were a significant step towards ensuring the quality of care and the professional development of junior doctors. Hospitals would call upon the best-qualified doctors for assistance in particularly challenging cases.
Tan Kelin had become one of those go-to surgeons whose expertise was unmatched and regularly summoned to handle the most complex cases.
After hearing this, Xie Wanying fully understood. To truly excel as a surgeon, one had to reach the mastery that Dr. Tan had achieved. That was the actual definition of “legendary.”
Once the patient from Bed 7 was anaesthetized, the operation was ready to begin.
