I imagine us sitting on the edge of the world,
feet dangling, exhausted but happy because
somehow we made it through
Our laughter floats in the thick, sweet evening air
as August swallows us whole, filling our hearts with
the ache of summer leaving; our mouths are heavy
with the flavour of blackberries ripened in the sun,
freshly picked with stained, scratched fingers
Summer doesn’t let it’s spoils go easily, but neither
do we; no, we just grin at the purple sky, wine-dark
as the seas of old, our smiles bright and tongues sharing
childhood memories of hikes and swimming in lakes
while sweat runs down our backs
If I could lock summer in a cage for you, I would,
if only because, love, you look so perfectly
magnificent in it’s light
