The driver was dead, and the school bus had ground to a halt. Shortly after, police cars arrived with red and blue lights flashing. The students disembarked one by one and were escorted to the police station.
Ke Mingqing gave a statement, but he conveniently left out his own actions.
Crimes like this were incredibly common in this world—perhaps as ubiquitous as middle-aged women dancing in public squares. The police were completely unfazed by it all.
Since the culprit had already been apprehended by Rain Crow and locked up at the Superhero Association, the officers didn't make things difficult for the students. They quickly contacted the parents to pick them up one by one.
Ke Mingqing, however, left on his own because he wasn't used to contacting his "family."
He used to be an orphan in his previous life, also named Ke Mingqing, but the original owner of this body—who shared his exact name—had a different background.
The family dynamic he found himself in was slightly complicated. It was a household of seven: a dad, a mom, an eldest brother, a second and third older sister, himself, and a younger sister... seven people in total. The original owner of the body was an adopted son.
His father, Ke Mingwei, had discussed it with his mother, Xia Wenna, and brought him home from the orphanage.
According to the memories that came with his transmigration, the original host initially felt completely out of place and struggled to integrate into the family. Fortunately, his older siblings took good care of him and never treated him like an outsider.
In this world where the Superhuman Species were everywhere, Ke Mingqing was now sixteen years old.
He didn't develop any psychological issues, nor did he feel like a burden living under someone else's roof. Instead, he changed his surname, blended into his new family, and got along perfectly with everyone.
They were all normal people, living together in a warm and happy home. Their only worry was the random chance of a family member being suddenly crushed into pulp by a Superhuman Species falling from the sky. However, as long as they bought insurance from the Superhero Company, it was a guaranteed safety net. At the very least, it ensured that the surviving family members would be taken care of for the rest of their lives.
In this day and age, everyone bought an insurance policy for themselves or secretly purchased one for their family members.
By the time his thoughts wandered to this point, it was almost dark. Ke Mingqing walked along Old Jingmai District for a while before stopping in front of his house.
He looked up at the three-story residential building with its red brick exterior. It clearly showed its age.
"I've transmigrated, yet they still shoved a family onto me. Is this to make up for the regrets of being an orphan in my past life?" Ke Mingqing sighed softly, stuffing his hands into his school uniform pockets.
He kept his head down in silence for a moment before fishing the keys out of his pocket. He slowly inserted the key into the lock, turned it, and pushed the door open.
The door swung inward. At that moment, the setting sun spilled into the pitch-black entryway, stretching his shadow across the wooden floor.
Ke Mingqing lifted his head and saw a middle-aged man with a scruffy beard and deep, piercing eyes leaning against the wall in the entryway. His arms were crossed, and his head hung low. He looked weighed down by heavy thoughts, his expression gloomy.
This was his father, Ke Mingwei.
Ke Mingwei's expression was off; he had probably learned something from the police.
But Ke Mingqing didn't think it was a big deal. The whole family were Muggles, anyway. The worst they could do was scold him severely; it wasn't like they would kill him in a fit of rage—just like when Harry Potter accidentally used Magic to inflate his aunt into a balloon and watched her float into the sky.
If push came to shove, he would just run away from home. Being an orphan like he was before his transmigration was much more relaxing, far better than playing house with these people.
Ke Mingqing's mind contained the original host's memories. He understood every single one of his family members, knowing all their habits and quirks, both big and small. The only thing he lacked was any emotional attachment to them.
It was an awkward situation. It felt like looking at a group of people who were both familiar and entirely foreign, leaving his emotions deeply conflicted.
"Dad, I'm back," Ke Mingqing said dismissively, despite his inner thoughts.
But at that very moment, as he looked up again, he suddenly saw a Superhuman Introduction panel floating above Ke Mingwei's head. The text on the panel was eerily familiar.
[Superhuman Species Code: "Rain Crow"]
[Danger Level: A++ (Infinitely close to the pinnacle of the world)]
[Currently Known Weaknesses: 1. Superhero "Rain Crow" never kills criminals.]
Ke Mingqing froze in place.
He suddenly remembered the "Upright Crow People" he had mocked on the school bus earlier—the one who had remained completely indifferent. Immediately after, sixteen years of the original host's memories flashed before his eyes.
Images of Ke Mingwei repeatedly making excuses to go out and buy cigarettes, only to vanish for the entire night, raced through his mind. Clue after clue crashed together like cars in a massive pile-up.
Ke Mingqing stood stunned for a moment, slowly processing a staggering truth.
As it turned out, the middle-aged man standing in the entryway wasn't just a Superhuman—he was a member of the Round Table Conference, standing at the very peak of Superheroes. All these years, Ke Mingwei had been hiding his true identity from his family.
Ke Mingqing immediately opened his player friend list, found the name "Heimu Tong," used his mind to open the chat panel, and mentally typed out a message.
[Ke Mingqing: I'm completely screwed.]
[Heimu Tong: ...Huh?]
