Chapter 70 – The Veiled Haven
As the Trio circled from the sky, the terrain below them unfolded like a masterpiece of natural grandeur—a massive circular expanse divided into four distinct quadrants, each unique and rich with intricate details. The outer edges of the circle sloped gently upward, forming a harmonious incline terrian towards the central structure. Splitting the entire terrain into the inner and outer sanctum. The outer sanctum is split by four quadrants.
As the owl flew around, the northern quadrant immediately drew their attention, its beauty unmatched and its design almost surreal. Dominating this section was a series of cascading mini pools, their bluish-green waters shimmering like polished emeralds under the sunlight. The sunlight danced on the pools, casting shifting patterns of brilliance across the ground. The interplay of light and water created an effect so mesmerising it seemed as though the mini pools themselves were alive, radiating a gentle luminescence. The mini pools were layered naturally across the sloping terrain like liquid jade veins, feeding the lower basins with a soft, melodic trickling sound. Tiny rivulets branched outward, their paths cutting gracefully into the rocky ground.
As they circled lower, the finer details came into focus. The mini pools were layered across the slope in graceful, natural steps and seemed to hold a piece of the sky, their surfaces mirroring the endless blue above, giving the illusion of infinite depth, and finally flowed into a huge static lake at the bottom of the terrain
“I’ve never seen anything like this,” Selena whispered, her voice tinged with awe.
At the base edge of this quadrant from the static lake, the water flowed into a cascade that fell over a cliff edge, transforming into a breathtaking waterfall that sprayed down into the abyss, its mist rising like a curtain of silver falling into the neighbouring eastern quadrant.
The second quadrant unfolded like a dream, a vibrant tapestry of life and colour that sharply contrasted the serene waters of the first. This section was a sprawling field of roses, stretching endlessly in every direction. Each petal glowed with its own hue, ranging from the deepest crimson to the softest blush, but most striking were the golden and pure white roses, which dominated the landscape with their radiant, almost celestial beauty.
The roses were planted in perfect rows, each separated by pathways of crushed white gravel. The soft crunch of the gravel beneath their feet, though faint, became a rhythmic backdrop to the gentle rustling of the blooms swaying in the light breeze. The air was heavy with the intoxicating fragrance of roses, sweet and overwhelming, as if the very essence of this place was woven into its scent.
Golden bees, larger than any Shawn or Selena had seen before, flitted lazily from bloom to bloom. Their wings shimmered faintly in the light, and their low hum harmonised with the faint melody of rustling leaves and distant water. These creatures moved with an air of gentle purpose, as if they were the guardians of this sacred field, ensuring its perpetual bloom.
Following the rose fields quadrant lies the southern quadrant was a lake of tranquil enchantment, its centrepiece a lotus. The lake stretched endlessly, its surface impossibly still, as though frozen in time. It mirrored the world around it with such clarity that the lines between reality and reflection blurred. The jagged peaks of the distant mountains and the shifting hues of the sky danced upon the water, creating an ever-changing canvas of serene beauty.
The lotuses were an unparalleled sight—colossal blooms that floated like royal barges upon the water. Each flower spanned several meters, its petals curving gracefully outward in a display of elegance. They seemed to shimmer with a life of their own, shifting colours in a mesmerising dance—blushing pinks deepened to radiant golds, which then cooled into hues of cerulean and violet. The water itself was no ordinary liquid as it lay still like a mirror. Despite its stillness, faint ripples occasionally formed, radiating outward in perfect circles without any visible cause.
The trio’s gaze lingered on the largest bloom at the pond’s centre, a massive lotus rising majestically above, emitting a faint glow that illuminated the pond’s core like a crown.
The final quadrant, the western, which stretched continuously from the still lake, unfolded like a masterpiece of natural artistry, an expanse of pale white crystal garden that blanketed the land with an otherworldly beauty. These crystal gardens shimmered faintly under the muted sunlight, their surfaces smooth, reflecting a soft glow that shifted subtly with the changing light. The entire landscape was a study in contrast—sharp yet elegant with an intangible allure.
The crystal garden varied in size but remained humble in height, none towering higher than the small trees they so intricately mimicked. Some formations stretched into delicate crystalline trees, their branching limbs fractal-like and mesmerising in their detail. Each branch glimmered faintly, as though imbued with frozen sunlight, but their edges were sharp, capable of slicing through flesh with ease. Interspersed among these crystalline trees were clusters of flower-like formations, their razor-edged petals arranged in precise symmetry, resembling blossoms crafted from glass.
The ground beneath was a canvas of scattered shards, glinting faintly as if a thousand tiny mirrors lay broken across the earth. As air flowed through the crystal garden, the entire terrain elicited a faint crunch, a sound that echoed softly in the still air, amplified by the faint hum that resonated throughout the garden. This hum was omnipresent, a subtle, low-pitched melody that seemed to arise from the crystals themselves.
The air was cool and crisp, carrying a faint clarity that made every detail of the garden stand out. Sunlight filtered through the pale blue sky above, casting soft, diffused light across the crystals. This light refracted off the mirror-like surfaces, creating a subdued dance of reflections that shifted with every moment. Unlike other crystal formations that might dazzle with multicoloured brilliance, these crystals remained subdued, offering only pale, dull white glimmers that added to their serene and enchanting presence. The crystalline garden stood as silent sentinels, inviting admiration, and their beauty was undeniable.
A common between all four quadrants was a fifty-foot-high plain ground that gave rise to a slope of the inner sanctum. At the top of the rising slope of the inner sanctum lay a flat space, untouched by the terrain of the surrounding quadrants. The slope itself was a smooth, verdant expanse of grass, gently sloping upwards. On the two quadrants of the inner sanctum, at its perimeter, stood eight glimmering Veinstone pillars, with the northern and southern edges left open. The veins within the pillars resembled branching tendrils, winding and twisting with natural grace.
Delicate flowering vines climbed the pillars, their vibrant tendrils adding an organic touch. These vines, soft and alive with colour, contrasted beautifully with the smooth, translucent sheen of the Veinstone, creating a harmonious blend of nature and stone. The base of the pillars rested upon an expanse of carefully laid quartz stone, their smooth surfaces worn by time yet still sturdy, forming a neat boundary around the entire sanctum.
Beyond the pillars, a grass maze stretched outward, standing 10 feet in height and 5 feet wide. Its winding path was carved into the grass with precision, creating a deliberate route. The maze extended 90 meters in all directions, guiding those who ventured through it toward the heart of the sanctum. The maze itself was rich and green, giving the impression of a living, breathing entity.
At the very centre of the sanctum, beyond the maze, stood a small dome, gently tinted green, as if grown from the earth itself. The dome was shaped like a delicate garden structure, its curved walls offering a sense of enclosure and serenity.
Once the trio had surveyed the landscape below, they quickly assessed their options for a safe landing. Shawn broke the silence, his voice calm but firm. “The fragment is there, I can feel it,” he said, his gaze fixed on the dome structure in the distance, “but something tells me a landing there directly would be… unwise.”
Makara, arms crossed, gave a curt nod. “Yes, every inch of this area is out of the ordinary and ominous and….still, my sake gourd is frozen.”
Selena, still peering down at the fields, pointed towards the quadrant of blooming roses. “The flower fields,” she suggested, “we will be in the open, that will make us a target, but it is easier to navigate and easier to defend ourselves if a situation arises.”
Shawn said after a moment’s thought. “Fine then, let’s aim for the outer edge and work our way inward.”
