Volume 2, Chapter 81 – Out of Control

Looking at the excited legendaries of the Graveyard before him, Sargus would be lying if he said he wasn’t feeling conflicted. But some things couldn’t be accomplished through hatred alone.

Sargus understood very well what the undead desired.

Revenge.

For the undead, revenge was a form of release. For hundreds of thousands of years, these legendaries had survived by clinging to the desire for vengeance. But the word “revenge” carried a weight so heavy that for hundreds of thousands of years, they repeated that single thought in their hearts every day.

Some might say that undead could live forever, wasn’t it a waste of endless time to only think about revenge? If they possessed eternal life, why stay obsessed with vengeance?

But…

Sargus knew the so-called undead were never truly immortal beings.

They were not.

Even if the body endured, the soul flame would one day go out. When that time came, the undead would become nothing more than a husk that could no longer move, truly, the dead in every sense.

Undead life was eternal, but their souls were not.

In truth, there was no such thing as eternal life in the world. And even if one did live forever, the price was unimaginably heavy.

Yes, undead life could span millions of years and still continue, but who could understand what kind of existence those millions of years truly were?

A world where only black and white could be seen. A realm without sun or moon, where the lonely stars were the only light.

They could not feel pain.

They could not feel hunger.

They could not feel touch.

Nor could they have a future.

They simply watched, numb, under a sky that never changed, day after day, year after year.

For millions of years, almost all undead lived this way. Their desire for vengeance had become so obsessive it was almost madness. It was precisely that obsession that let them endure the loneliness and solitude of those million years.

Sargus understood what the Graveyard undead were thinking, because every undead in the Graveyard had been gathered by him, one by one, from the outside world over the span of those million years.

In a sense, Sargus had given them a home, one that belonged only to them. And the role Sargus played was akin to that of a father.

“I understand your opinions…”

Slowly, Sargus’s dignified voice echoed throughout the grand hall. In an instant, the previously noisy chamber fell silent.

“But I hope you will follow my command. Cease the war. Begin building the plane portals at any cost!”

“The war cannot stop, Grand Duke!”

No sooner had his words fallen than the Headless Knight Fischerna stepped forward from the ranks of legendaries.

“Our Graveyard stands on the verge of destroying the Kingdom. If we halt now, we’ll only give the Kingdom a chance to rally allies and counterattack! Hundreds of thousands of years ago, I was once a human Paladin, I know the Kingdom’s ways all too well, Grand Duke! If we give up on the war now and let them recover, once they unite with other factions and strike back, how will our Graveyard ever sweep across the Main World?”

It was a logical argument.

But Sargus was furious at Fischerna’s direct defiance.

“You are disobeying my order, Fischerna! Watch your words!”

Despite Sargus’ angry tone and the crushing Throne-class aura descending over the hall, Fischerna showed no sign of backing down.

“I… I am not, Grand Duke. I’m only speaking the truth.”

“Stand down!”

The moment those words left his mouth, a heavy set of footsteps echoed through the silent hall. Along with them came the metallic clatter of chains dragging across the floor.

“Grand Duke, I think Fischerna is not wrong.”

The speaker was a grotesque Legendary creature, its body stitched together from dozens of mangled corpses, the Abomination.

“Even though I, the Abomination, am nothing but a fool, I can still tell right from wrong, Grand Duke.”

Saying that, the Abomination took another step forward, standing beside the Headless Knight.

Before the furious Sargus could respond, the Lich King Kersu slowly floated to their side.

“Grand Duke, I too think you’re being overly cautious this time. Our Graveyard’s momentum is at its peak. The three million Bone Dragons nearing epic rank are the accumulation of our Graveyard’s strength over a million years. With such power, even if the seven remaining factions joined forces, why should we fear them?”

“Even if we take a step back, as far as I know, Inferno and the Sanctuary have been bitter enemies for a million years. The Dwarves of the Fortress and the Elves of Nature look down on each other and constantly clash. The Academies are filled with those old fossils who care only for arcane knowledge, not the outside world.”

“Not to mention, the Stronghold and the Kingdom are both already on their last breath. They can’t stir up anything meaningful.”

“In this situation, there’s no way the seven factions could unite against us. And the Kingdom’s Throne-class is nothing but a Paladin King who’s lived a few hundred years, while the Stronghold’s Throne-class is an old Shaman so ancient most have forgotten his name.”

“With your strength, Grand Duke, defeating either of them would be effortless. So why withdraw now, when the time is so favorable?”

True to his reputation for calm and intellect, the Lich King’s reasoning was so precise that even Sargus nearly doubted himself.

As Kersu’s words sank in, almost every Legendary present, save for the newly joined Death Knight Karl, stepped forward together to stand beside Fischerna, the Abomination, and Kersu.

“You all…”

Though their movements were silent, their stance was unmistakable. They were showing Sargus where they stood, revealing their shared resolve.

And that was… to never stop the war.

‘…Perhaps I should never have started this war in the first place.’

Sargus knew that from this moment on, he would no longer be able to restrain these legendaries.

In truth, when he decided to call this meeting, he already expected this scene might unfold. Even knowing this, he still did it.

Because he knew, even if not today, this moment would come sooner or later.

In that brief daze, Sargus suddenly recalled how confident he had been when he first decided to ignite this war.

A faint doubt surfaced unbidden in his heart.

Strange.

Why had he been so confident back then?
