Volume 3, Chapter 49 – Sneak Attack
Volume 3, Chapter 49 – Sneak Attack
Not long after the knight girl Fisiel left the Kingdom army at the Northern Fortress, the Beastman army stationed not far away quietly began to move.
To be precise, after learning that Fisiel would be leaving, Grinrui began preparing to launch a sneak attack on the Kingdom army that no longer had a Legendary sitting in command.
For this sneak attack, Grinrui personally led the Wolf Cavalry of the Skullcrusher Legion at the very front, and behind Grinrui marched thirty thousand fully armed Beastman soldiers, faces sharp and spirits high.
As for why Grinrui did not bring the rest of the Beastman soldiers, there was a reason for that as well.
As had been mentioned before, the Beastmen were already severely lacking in weapons and equipment, so the only forces that could still be sent into battle now were the Wolf Cavalry and the thirty thousand fully armed Beastmen behind Grinrui.
You could say that if this sneak attack failed, this army of three hundred thousand Beastmen would face a complete collapse.
They might even be routed and wiped out by the Kingdom army advancing on the momentum of their victory.
However, as for this sneak attack, even though the Kingdom had tightened security somewhat after Fisiel left, it was only to a certain extent, just a small increase in alertness.
And with one side prepared and the other unprepared, the Kingdom only suspected that the Beastmen might launch a sneak attack, while the Paladins of the Kingdom army did not know that this time, the Beastmen would definitely attack.
Moreover, it would be a sneak attack where they would go all out.
Precisely because the Beastmen had made their preparations early, even when their army had already crept up to a spot not far from the Kingdom army, the sentries the Kingdom had posted still had not discovered them.
Of course, the Kingdom had also arranged hidden sentries farther out from the camp, but under the overwhelming strength of Legendary Grinrui and the sharp sense of smell of the Wolf Cavalry’s mounts, the War Wolves, those covert Kingdom lookouts lurking in the shadows had long since been silently erased by the Beastmen.
And now…
The Beastman army that had reached the outskirts of the Kingdom camp could no longer move forward, not even one more step.
The reason was that there were no longer any obstacles or terrain ahead that could conceal the Beastmen if they tried to keep sneaking closer.

But at this distance, Grinrui felt that there was no need to sneak any further.
“From where we are standing now to the Kingdom army’s camp, this distance is already enough for us to launch a charge…”
Hearing the report from the Wolf Cavalry captain below, Grinrui nodded in understanding.
“Since the distance is enough for us to charge, then there is no need for us to tread carefully any longer…”
“Pass down my order. All Beastmen, begin the attack!”
“Understood!”
As Grinrui’s order was relayed down the line, Beastmen mounted on giant beasts throughout the army drew in deep breaths, then began hammering away at the huge war drums strapped to the backs of their mounts.
In an instant.
Thunderous yet perfectly synchronized drumbeats rolled through the entire Beastman army.
Thump. Thump.
“Roar!”
“Roar!”
With the drumbeats echoing in their ears, the Beastmen opened their mouths one after another and let out wild, bestial roars.
In the very next second, Grinrui raised the massive warhammer in his hand high above his head.

“Wolf Cavalry, charge with me!”
“Charge! Charge!”
Grinrui spurred forward at the head of the army, and behind him, countless Wolf Cavalry surged forth like a raging torrent, kicking up great clouds of dust as they charged toward the Kingdom’s camp.
It was only at this moment that most of the human army on the Kingdom’s side finally reacted.
“Enemy attack! Enemy attack!”
“It is an enemy attack!”
“Damn it, the Beastmen suddenly launched an attack!”
You could say that the Kingdom army right now looked exactly the same as the Beastmen had when they were ambushed before.
Their lines were in chaos, the soldiers panicked and flustered, not knowing what to do.
Even so, there was still a group of people who remained very calm.
This group was the ten thousand strong Paladins of the Round Table.
“Lancelot. The Beastmen seem to be attacking. What do we do next?”
Aside from Fisiel, Lancelot was the strongest and also the most senior Paladin, and at this moment he had become the main pillar the Paladins relied on.
“The Beastmen’s attack is so sudden, they must have come prepared. What we need to do now is organize a counterattack.”

As the most senior Paladin, Lancelot very calmly made his decision.
“We Paladins will go and hold back the Beastman assault first. Gawain, you go steady the rest of the Kingdom army and then organize them.”
“Understood!”
Once he had been called by name, Gawain did not hesitate in the slightest and turned to leave at once.
“Everyone, the worst possible situation has come to pass after the captain’s departure. Now is the time to test us and temper our resolve.”
Lancelot swept his gaze around them, his eyes firm and solemn.
“Now, draw our swords and raise our shields, mount our warhorses, call upon the Holy Light, and go to face the Beastmen.”
“For the Holy Light!”
The Paladins shouted in unison.
Then they quickly went to find their warhorses. After drawing the weapons in their hands, the Paladins once more silently gathered at Lancelot’s side.
By this time, Lancelot was fully armored, sitting atop his warhorse clad in barding.
The gathered Paladins gazed at Lancelot in silence.
Lancelot returned their looks with a firm gaze of his own, then let out a low shout, spurred his horse, and galloped toward the part of the camp that was under Beastman attack.
As Lancelot moved out, every Paladin present spurred their warhorses and followed after him.

At this moment, the Wolf Cavalry under Grinrui’s command had already charged right up to the wooden palisade of the camp. Although the Kingdom had set up some large wooden obstacles to impede Beastman cavalry charges, these obstacles were meaningless before the nimble War Wolves.
You could say that with Grinrui leading them, the Wolf Cavalry advanced unhindered until they reached the very outermost perimeter of the camp.
“A wall made of mere wood is supposed to stop me?”
Looking at the towering wooden wall before him, Grinrui, astride his War Wolf, could not help letting out a quiet laugh.
Right after, a faint glow began to emanate from the head of the great hammer in his hand.
“Now then, for me…”
Grinrui urged his War Wolf forward until he was right next to the palisade. Ignoring the scattered arrows raining down from within the camp, he swung the warhammer in his hand and brought it crashing down fiercely toward the three meter high wooden wall in front of him.
“Break it!”
With a roar, the glowing warhammer smashed into the wooden palisade of the camp, and in that instant, the wall where the hammer struck began to crumble, turning inch by inch into fragments.
In the next second, the towering wooden wall before Grinrui… turned into nothing but a field of splinters.
It was hard to believe that with just a single clash, the camp could be broken open so directly by the Beastmen…
And it was only at this moment that Lancelot and the reinforcing Paladin knights finally arrived.
