Volume 3, Chapter 60 – Scream of Terror

The battle began all of a sudden without any warning.

However, the Fisiel of today was no longer the Paladin Tianyin had known who only handled class changes. She too had now been tempered by war.

Although the Kingdom’s army had suffered heavy losses from the Beastmen’s surprise attack, after around three days of rest and reorganization, they were still able to face another battle head on.

And after the Headless Knight Fischerna led the Dread Knights in a charge, Fisiel also calmly began directing the army to counterattack.

A cavalry charge, especially a charge of Undead cavalry, ranked among the strongest in the eight great factions.

After all, Undead cavalry did not fear death at all, and combined with the frightening appearance of Undead riders, the charge of Undead cavalry could not be called weak.

“Archers, volley fire. Shield warriors hold the front. Spearmen form a defensive formation. Mages, alter the terrain. Priests, grant buffs to the frontline soldiers!”

Fisiel gave her commands coolly.

After Fisiel’s orders were issued, the Kingdom’s army began moving like a machine. The tall warriors raised their shields and stood at the very front. The soldiers holding long spears set their weapons atop the shields.

The archers in the rear drew their bows and aimed at the sky in a slanted arc.

Further back, the robed mages began chanting spells. At the same time, on the Undead cavalry’s path of advance, the previously flat ground they had to pass over started turning muddy.

At the very back, the Priests shrouded in holy light began attaching one buff after another to the soldiers.

In truth, Fisiel did not want to sit and defend like this. As a Paladin, when it came to existences like the Undead, the only thing she wanted to do was so-called purification.

Purifying the Undead.

So Fisiel’s real intention had actually been to lead her Round Table Knights in a direct countercharge.

However…

The Round Table Knights were already reduced to less than a tenth of their former strength. They simply could not fight against the numerous Undead cavalry before them, so Fisiel chose to defend instead.

“They are coming…”

At this moment, in Fisiel’s eyes, the charging Dread Knights pushed through several waves of chaotic arrow rain and arrived at the very front of the Kingdom’s formation.

Then, under Fisiel’s gaze, they slammed straight into the Kingdom army’s defensive formation.

In an instant, horse and rider were thrown in all directions.

The attack mages had reshaped the flat terrain, since the Undead cavalry had already gone fully into their charge. Although the altered ground slowed the charge somewhat, it did not stop the Undead cavalry’s advance.

Sharp spearheads stabbed into the warhorses of the Dread Knights. If these cavalrymen had not been Undead, they might have suffered terrible losses under the obstruction of the spears.

But in reality, although the Dread Knights were hindered and struck by the spears, their charging speed did not decrease much.

They simply ignored the spears right in front of them, then crashed heavily into the shield wall at the very front of the Kingdom’s army.

This was when the true power of cavalry showed itself.

Empowered by the momentum of the charge, the moment the Dread Knights smashed into the shield wall, they immediately sent those warriors, who had been holding up their shields after receiving the Priests’ enhancements, flying one after another.

It was hard to imagine.

In only the blink of an eye, the defensive formation under Fisiel’s command was crushed like paper by the Dread Knights under Fischerna.

“Divide and surround the cavalry that broke through. Do not let them escape. If they manage to pull back and charge again, our army will be on the verge of collapsing.”

Fisiel remained very calm. She knew full well what state the Kingdom’s army was in. Compared to the Beastmen, who never surrendered, the Kingdom’s troops would collapse the moment casualties passed a certain point.

So, after their first line of defense was broken without suspense, Fisiel gave the order to surround those cavalry and deny them any chance to regroup for another charge.

Fisiel’s intent was very clear, and also very effective.

After all, cavalry that were unable to charge were only infantry riding on horses.

Of course, Fisiel’s intentions were also very easy to notice.

After the knight girl gave her orders, Fischerna, who had led the Dread Knights into the formation, looked around and quickly perceived the Kingdom’s intent to encircle them.

“Want to surround us? Looks like you have no idea why we are called Dread Knights.”

After cutting down several Kingdom soldiers who had rushed up, Fischerna immediately wheeled her horse around and led the Dread Knights in a withdrawal.

However, if they only tried to retreat, judging from the current situation, they would still be completely surrounded by the Kingdom’s army.

Except reality was not like that.

In the somewhat chaotic melee, the Dread Knights suddenly all let out sharp, piercing cries at the same time.

It was like the sound of fingernails scraping across glass, shrill and jarring, and it reached the ears of every single soldier on the field without missing anyone.

“Wait… this is…”

Hearing those sounds, Fisiel felt a bad premonition in her heart.

And just as Fisiel sensed that something was wrong, on the battlefield, the soldiers who had been preparing to fully surround Fischerna’s cavalry, the moment they heard the screams, all seemed to see something terrifying. They could not help dropping their weapons and began shrieking.

The true cause of this phenomenon was the Dread Knights’ sudden screams just now.

The skill Fear Scream, a skill unique to the Dread Knights among the Undead, could use a scream to plunge those nearby into terrifying illusions, causing them to lose combat ability for a period of time due to fear.

“To think there was a skill like this…”

Fisiel had not anticipated something like this at all.

In her previous battles against the Undead, Fisiel had never encountered Dread Knights. The ones she had faced were Death Knights, who were the counterparts to Paladins among the Undead.

As for Dread Knights, Fisiel had never had contact with them.

So when such a sudden development appeared, Fisiel herself had not seen it coming.

Due to Fear Scream, the encirclement that had originally been able to trap the Dread Knights now had a huge gap, and if they were not stopped in time and the Dread Knights managed to escape and launch another charge, Fisiel knew very well that the Kingdom army’s defeat would not be far away.

“Given the situation, I have no choice but to go.”

With the current state of the battle and that opening which had not yet been sealed, Fisiel knew that only she, a Legendary, could step in personally.

“Gawain, I am leaving command to you. I am going to stop those Undead.”

With that thought, Fisiel did not hesitate to hand command over to Gawain, the only Round Table Knight still remaining.

Then she led the remaining Paladins and charged straight toward the Dread Knights.
