Volume 5, Chapter 56 – Besiege Three Sides, Leave One Open
A burly figure suddenly appeared on top of the city wall and, with that figure’s appearance.
A dazzling streak of sword light suddenly flashed out.
“Not good!”
A few Assassin players who had climbed onto the wall managed to avoid that fierce sword light by a hair thanks to being farther away and reacting quickly.
But the Assassin players close to that figure were not so lucky. With a flash of sword light, one player after another holding daggers or short swords turned into pale white light and vanished.
“If you want to open the city gate, you should ask my sword first!”
A dull voice rang out. As the voice echoed, an invisible and terrifying aura began to spread from the figure that had cut down several dozen Assassin players in a single stroke.
The players were unfamiliar with this figure. To the NPC soldiers charging toward the wall though, this figure was all too familiar.
Because the one who had stepped forward was Julius.
“Could that guy have stayed on the wall the whole time and never gone down?”
The Legendary player commanding the army sensed Julius’ Legendary aura. From the moment Julius appeared on the wall, he already knew that his plan of sending Assassin players to secretly open the gates had completely fallen apart.
“But if you are here, that makes things easier for us next…”
The Legendary player leading the army was extremely confident.

There was a reason behind that confidence.
Before Subworld had even launched, this player had specialized in virtual real time strategy games and had made a name for himself in those games purely through his own skill.
It was precisely because Yunchou had taken a liking to his unique talent for war that he was given a Legendary Template personally by Yunchou and became the commander of a player army under his own banner.
Now, after leaving the main force behind to pin down the NPC main army, he had decided to personally lead a host of players on a rapid strike toward the NPC capital.
In his view, if the NPC capital fell, it would undoubtedly be a heavy blow to the NPC main force at the front line.
Once news of the capital’s fall reached them, the morale of the NPC main force would definitely drop and with low morale, he would suffer fewer casualties when wiping out the NPCs on this side afterward.
Earlier, although he knew the NPCs had someone commanding them, he was not sure whether that someone was Julius.
Now that he sensed Julius, the only Legendary on the NPC side, had appeared in his field of view, the Legendary player instantly formed what he felt was the optimal method for taking this capital.
“Everyone.”
Having thought of this method, the Legendary player decisively began to put it into action.
After speaking up and drawing the attention of the several dozen players around him whom Yunchou had sent as reinforcements, the Legendary player in charge of the army finally spoke slowly.
“Next comes the actual siege. According to the battle plan I am about to lay out, I will need you all to lead your own player squads and begin attacking the city from two other directions.”
“Three directions at once? Wouldn’t that spread us too thin?”

One player with Legendary strength clearly did not understand.
“Wouldn’t it be enough to just mass our forces and charge straight in? Why make it so troublesome? And if we really want to attack from several directions, why not go from all four sides?”
“No. For us, the best way to reduce losses in a siege is to besiege three sides and leave one side open.”
“Concentrating our forces on one point is workable, but the enemy Legendary is there too. If we just pile everyone into a single assault, the cost will be too high. Attacking from three sides at once has its own advantages. They only have one Legendary. To keep the capital from falling, that Legendary will definitely try to cover all three fronts.”
“And because he has to make sure none of the three walls falls, that Legendary will be forced to rush back and forth between all three sides, constantly putting out fires. That way, we can wear down the enemy Legendary’s combat strength as much as possible.”
The Legendary commander spoke at length and with ease.
“As for why we are not attacking from four directions, that is actually so we don’t give the NPCs in the city a chance to fight to the death.”
“Huh? What do you mean by that?”
“I am not completely sure how these NPCs think. But I am deliberately leaving one direction untouched to give the NPCs in the city the illusion that even if they cannot hold the city, they still have a route to escape.”
“And because they will think they have a way out, those NPC soldiers will not fight to the death to defend the city. If we attacked from all four sides at once, they might decide to go all in against us since they no longer have any retreat.”
“Granted, our player army outnumbers the NPCs by ten to one. Even so, with NPCs whose individual strength far surpasses that of most of our players, this siege is bound to cost us a lot.”
“I chose to attack from three sides in order to cut down those losses as much as we can.”

One had to admit, his reasoning was stunning. Just looking at the expressions on the dozen or so players present, they went from initial disdain, to growing surprise, and from surprise slowly shifted into respect.
“God.”
“So you are a god-tier strategist… we learned something today, we really did.”
“Since God says so, of course we will follow the orders and act accordingly. Though that reminds me, God, would you mind telling us your name?”
In Subworld, player IDs could be hidden. Out of caution, this Legendary player who commanded the army had kept his ID hidden the entire time.
“My name?”
A meaningful look appeared on the player’s face.
“Yushan Lunjin.”
“Then we will just call you God Lunjin!”
“You flatter me. You flatter me.”
Julius had blocked the Assassins’ plan to secretly open the city gate in time.
Although he had ruined the players’ scheme, the fact that the players were about to begin their siege did not improve much.
As time passed, the silent player army began their formal assault.

Siege ladders, wooden barricades, siege towers.
All kinds of methods for scaling the walls went into action one after another and, with the start of the siege, Yushan Lunjin set up a temporary respawn point right in the middle of his central command.
With that in place, even if the players storming the walls died, they would respawn nearby and could jump straight back into the fight.
As the siege went on, Julius also received reports that the north wall and the south wall were both under attack from players.
To hold the capital, Julius had no choice but to rush back and forth between the east, west, and north walls.
Thanks to the advantage of the walls and his own Legendary strength, it was hard for the players to actually get up onto the battlements. Even so, Julius knew that this was only the beginning.
Because…
He knew that among the outsider army, the player host, there were still three players with Legendary strength who had not even made a move yet.
However… his stamina was already being forced down bit by bit by his constant dashing between fronts.
In the blink of an eye, two hours passed.
At that moment, one of the three Legendary players who had remained still in the distance finally moved.
