Volume 6, Chapter 9 – Melee Mage?
Surviving between the cracks.
In the next instant, a barrage of spells that seemed to blanket the sky, so dense in his field of vision it almost blotted out the sun, came roaring toward him.
Those instant cast spells were not all the same. Although there were some repeats among them, the vast majority were all different types of magic.
As those spells launched their assault at him, Danqiu Yibai decided he would do everything he could to evade them, then get close to the Dark Elf Seles and take this NPC out with close combat.
In fact, Danqiu Yibai did an excellent job.
With the speed of a Legendary and the sharp perception befitting that rank, he easily avoided Seles’ first wave of spells.
Even though the spells that followed seemed endless, at the start Danqiu Yibai still relied on his powerful Legendary strength to get through it all without taking a hit.
Of course, apart from Danqiu Yibai himself, the players he had brought along did not have it nearly so easy. Faced with the overwhelming spell barrage, the first wave was almost entirely wiped out.
“Huh? You are actually fine?”
After that first volley, Seles noticed that Danqiu Yibai was still safe and sound, his condition more or less normal.
“Honestly, would it kill you to just let me kill you nicely?”
Seles’ brows furrowed slightly as she spoke, her tone carrying a faint note of troubled puzzlement.
“Are you kidding me, why should I just stand here and let you kill me?”

Danqiu Yibai was still plenty stubborn. Hearing Seles’ words, he shot back without a second thought.
“Oh my, if you talk like that, then you are not being obedient at all…”
Her eyes narrowed slightly and the Elven girl’s gaze took on an even more cheerful curve.
As her words fell, one profound and intricate magic circle after another began to surface without pause behind her and in the air above her head.
With the appearance of those spell arrays, all kinds of powerful spells followed in their wake.
Lightning, flame, ice lances. These three forms of magical attacks were the most common.
Of course, despite how overwhelming and sky-filling those spells looked, for the moment Danqiu Yibai found that if he focused only on dodging, it was unexpectedly easy.
As he continued to dodge spell after spell, Danqiu Yibai was also steadily closing the distance between himself and the Dark Elf.
And as luck would have it, Seles seemed not to care at all that Danqiu Yibai was deliberately getting closer. She continued to do as she pleased, flinging out wave after wave of spells that blanketed the field.
“Mm…”
Right then, Danqiu Yibai suddenly let out a muffled groan.
That sound came because he had just been accidentally clipped by one of Seles’ spells.

Even though he had been dodging perfectly up to that point, when you are constantly evading, a few mistakes are inevitable.
“I really do not get why she gave me that unbeatable feeling before… she is obviously just a Legendary who only knows how to toss out spells…”
He had taken some damage, but Danqiu Yibai knew very well that he could not just back off now. Either he was going to be killed by the NPC in front of him, or he was going to kill this NPC.
Because he understood that clearly, once he felt he had even a sliver of a chance, Danqiu Yibai began to question why he had had that illusion earlier that he was no match for Seles.
“I can do this… something like this…”
“No matter how strong an NPC is, they still cannot compare to players. After all, our understanding of the game was bought with countless deaths and resurrections… and NPCs, who only ever have a single life, can never have as much experience as we do with certain things…”
Dodging Seles’ attacks, Danqiu Yibai kept thinking about what he should do next.
The wind stirred by magic blew gently around him.
As time passed, Danqiu Yibai finally reached the range he had been waiting for to make his move.
Of course, when it came to distance for a melee Legendary, the actual attack range for Danqiu Yibai was still about a little over ten meters away from the Dark Elf Seles.
For Danqiu Yibai, that distance was something he could cross in the blink of an eye and appear right in Seles’ face.
“Now!”

He had just reached the ideal distance to strike, and at that moment there was also a brief gap in Seles’ stream of spells.
Seizing this short opening, Danqiu Yibai took his chance.
Almost the instant the thought of attacking flashed through his mind, his body in the real-feeling world moved at the same time and exploded into motion.
At that moment, Danqiu Yibai’s speed broke the sound barrier. With a thunderous sonic boom, his sword-wielding figure vanished from everyone’s view.
In the next instant, Danqiu Yibai appeared in front of the Dark Elf Seles.
The moment he appeared, Seles’ unreadable gaze met Danqiu Yibai’s slightly triumphant eyes.
“You wanted me dead… but do not say things like that if you are not absolutely sure you can pull it off…”
Right then, Danqiu Yibai instinctively believed that the Dark Elf Seles was already a turtle in a jar. After all, as a Mage she had allowed a melee fighter like him to get into close range, and fragile spellcasters were naturally countered by melee warriors.
“Oh? So you mean when I said I would kill you just now, I was bluffing?”
What puzzled Danqiu Yibai a little was that after he got into melee range, Seles was still completely calm. The feeling she gave him was as if she did not care at all that he had already closed the distance.
“Or is it that you think you can kill me?”
While Danqiu Yibai was secretly grumbling in his heart about how Seles was too carefree, the Elven girl in front of him spoke another line whose meaning he could not quite grasp.

“Is that not the case?”
He reflexively shot back with a question of his own.
And in that instant…
Danqiu Yibai suddenly swung his sword.
Yet just a second before the blade could slice into Seles’ neck, the sword, which carried an aura of unstoppable momentum, came to an abrupt, jarring halt.
“Urgh… you…”
Because his Template had already fused with his body, while Danqiu Yibai possessed great power, injuries in the game also brought with them pain that was just as real as in the real world.
At the same time, an indescribable pain surged up from his abdomen.
As he slowly lowered his head, Danqiu Yibai finally saw that a beautifully crafted dagger was buried deep in his stomach.
“What is it? Why are you so shocked? Can a Mage not know a bit of melee combat?”
