Volume 1, Chapter 54 – Starting to Understand This World

“Wow… look, there’s an NPC over there posting a quest, and she’s super cute…”

“For real… and she’s got silver hair, the legendary kind… I’m melting…”

“As expected of this game, even a quest NPC is this adorable…”

The moment Tianyin appeared, even though there were only a few dozen players in the Job Change Hall, every single gaze was drawn to her irresistibly cute figure.

“Bro, how about we go take that quest? Maybe we can even gain that NPC’s favor~”

One player suggested to his companion, though judging by his tone, it was clearly Tianyin’s cuteness that motivated him.

“……”

But after taking a closer look at Tianyin’s face, so cute it transcended gender, the companion’s eyes also began to waver.

That said, getting a quest that offered a good amount of experience points would make any normal player interested.

And so, the two players began walking toward Tianyin’s direction.

But what was Tianyin doing at that moment?

Of course, if someone thought she was just sitting there idly waiting for players to take her quest, they’d be completely wrong.

After all, Tianyin wasn’t just the type to sit around and daydream. While practicing her Life Skills in action, she was also studying and learning about this game world.

Or rather, to be precise, she was learning about the background of this world.

Although Yivrea had already explained a lot to her earlier, even after learning that this world had Eight Great Factions, Tianyin still had no real grasp of its geography, power distribution, or overall structure, just like a player fumbling around in the dark.

However, as an NPC, Tianyin did have one clear advantage over players.

She could easily access information about the game world.

Well… that description only really applied to her, because so far, Tianyin was the only NPC who had actually made contact with the core of this world, the entity known as the System.

Because of that contact, Tianyin could directly request information from the System, about the world’s history, background, and structure. So, yes, getting world info was basically effortless for her.

And in the end, Tianyin managed to obtain the right to view what the System called the “surface-level information.”

Emphasis on surface-level.

For the past few days, Tianyin had been alternating between posting quests and sitting in the Job Change Hall while quietly reading and learning about this world’s structure.

The first thing she studied was the Sanctuary faction.

Each faction had a Supreme Being, the highest ruler of that faction. The Sanctuary’s Supreme Being was the one already mentioned earlier, the so-called “Heavenly Father.”

Among all the Eight Great Factions, Heavenly Father was said to be the oldest and most powerful of the Supremes. The earliest record of Heavenly Father’s appearance dated back a million years, to the ancient era.

Heavenly Father had created the race of angels and opened the Sanctuary Plane outside the Main World for them to live in. To the angels, Heavenly Father was not only their creator but also the very object of their faith.

Across the span of a million years, Heavenly Father had rarely taken action, but each time they did, it was against another faction’s Supreme, and every single time ended in overwhelming victory.

Thus, among the Supremes, Heavenly Father’s power was said to be unfathomable.

Though powerful, the Sanctuary still had an enemy, the Inferno.

The Inferno faction, though immensely strong, was chaotic by nature. The lords within the faction constantly warred among themselves. Beings as powerful as Heavenly Father were numerous there, yet they all remained hidden deep within the Abyss, rarely revealing themselves.

And among them, the main rival of the Sanctuary was the Inferno.

The reason was because Heavenly Father’s former right hand, the holy archangel Lucifer, had been seduced by one of the Inferno’s Supremes and ultimately fell, becoming one of the Inferno’s mighty lords, the Fallen Angel Lucifer.

It could be said that the Inferno, which had caused Lucifer’s fall, was seen as the sworn enemy of Heavenly Father and the entire Sanctuary faction.

Aside from these two eternal rivals, the Sanctuary and the Inferno, the Main World also had its own native powers.

The Main World consisted of a single, vast continent, divided among three major factions.

The Kingdom faction, dominated by humans, occupied the central and most prosperous region of the continent. Within it existed multiple nations, the Seven Northern Kingdoms and the Three Southern Empires formed the entirety of the Kingdom faction.

To the north of the continent lay the strongholds of the Beastmen faction, whose lands stretched across vast grasslands and deserts.

Because their territory consisted mostly of arid plains and sand, food shortages often forced the Beastmen to wage war against the human Kingdoms every year to seize supplies.

Thus, the Kingdom and the Stronghold (Beastmen) factions engaged in large-scale wars almost every single year.

“Wuu… so that’s how it is… then, let’s see what the third faction on the continent is…”

After reading up to that point, Tianyin was about to scroll further through the System’s data, but suddenly, she heard a sound notification, indicating that a player was approaching.

“Wuu…”

Curious, she looked up and saw two players walking toward her.

Normally, to accept a quest, one simply clicked on the exclamation mark above an NPC’s head.

However, that method didn’t really work in this kind of game world…

After all, in a virtual reality game, no sane person would literally “click” an exclamation mark floating in the air.

“Um, excuse me, do you need any help?”

Yes, that was the proper standard opening line for taking a quest.

Usually, at this point, the NPC would respond with something like, “Yes, I have a rather troublesome matter that I need someone’s help with…”

“Wuu,”

But Tianyin wasn’t the kind of NPC who followed those canned dialogues.

“Yes! Outside the city is a forest. I need you to gather some materials for me there, please~”

“Uh… alright, got it…”

The two players were stunned. Normally, accepting a quest required going through a proper dialogue sequence, so how had they managed to receive one so easily from this little loli NPC?

Though they were confused, the System notification chimed in their ears, confirming that they had indeed successfully accepted the quest.

“Well… Even though I wanted to chat with that little girl a bit, maybe raise her favorability…”

As they walked away, one of the two players sighed regretfully.
