Chapter 18.2
Chapter 18.2
The opening ceremony finally began. Chu Xiaoyi no longer had to talk to the enthusiastic parents, and he couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. The ceremony was quite normal, with speeches by principals, student representatives, and selected parents.
The content of the speeches was not new, but the languages and vocabulary used were extremely abundant.
The principal was an old, blond gentleman. He finished his speech in Chinese, English, and French.
Chu Xiaoyi said blankly, “Is it so difficult to be a kindergarten principal now? Do you even need to know three foreign languages?”
He felt that ever since entering this kindergarten, he had spouted a continuous barrage of complaints with no way to stop.
Mother Anne replied, “What’s so hard about this? Xiaoxiao is even better than him. Xiaoxiao is coming! Xiaoxiao is coming!”
Chu Xiaoyi heard the excited voice of Annie’s mother and looked in the direction where she was looking. Sure enough, he saw Chu Xiaoxiao donning a small, dark robe on stage. Inside the robe was the school uniform she wore in the morning; overall, she looked quite dignified and well-behaved.
Like an exemplary role model!
The blonde headmaster smiled gently at Chu Xiaoxiao. Then he reached out, guided her forward, and adjusted the height of the microphone on the podium for her.
Chu Xiaoxiao thanked the principal and began to speak fluently without a script: “Respected teachers, dear parents, lovely students…”
Although Chu Xiaoxiao’s speech level was childlike, as expected of a three-and-a-half-year-old child, she still looked very cute as she stood in the center of the auditorium.
Chu Xiaoyi saw the little bun standing on the podium to speak, and for some reason his heart suddenly softened, and he reached out for his phone to take a picture of her.
Chu Xiaoxiao’s speech was not long, yet just when Chu Xiaoyi thought that she was about to step down, she suddenly changed her tone, and another language was uttered fluently from her lips. “ Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, dear teachers, and… ”
T/N: The text highlighted in bold was spoken in English.
Chu Xiaoyi was slightly stunned. Wanting to concentrate on listening to his ‘bilingual’ sister, he put down his mobile phone and focused on the stage. Yet after a while, her tone changed yet again as she continued, “Mesdames, messieurs, bonjour*…”
T/N: Madames, sirs, greetings
“?! ”
“This is…”
Anne’s mother exclaimed in admiration, “Xiaoxiao’s French is so good, no worse than Annie’s!”
Anne’s father was French, so the children in their family grew up speaking both Chinese and French.
“???”
After Chu Xiaoxiao finished speaking French, she continued to calmly say, “еди и дентлмен*…”
T/N: Ladies and gentlemen
Chu Xiaoyi said, unsure, “Is this Russian?”
Mother Anne acquiesced: “You are so good, you can hear it!” ”
No, no, not at all! I just remembered the experience of being humiliated by the tongue twisters that Xiaoxiao did that day.
Chu Xiaoxiao switched to two more languages, adding up to a total of six short speeches in different languages. After that, she finally stepped down calmly amidst the warm applause.
Anne’s mother applauded and regrettably said, “It’s a pity, I still can’t understand Spanish and Arabic.”
Chu Xiaoyi’s face was full of confusion as he asked, “Since you can’t understand them, how do you know that she spoke Spanish and Arabic?”
Anne’s mother responded, “Because Xiaoxiao’s speeches are all in the working languages* of the United Nations: Chinese, English, French, Russian, Arabic, and Spanish. That totals up to 6 total.”
T/N: The United Nations has six official languages, with those listed above.
“…”
I didn’t even know that my sister was a spokesman for the United Nations!
After Chu Xiaoxiao’s speech, the parent representative took over the stage to speak, and he used three languages like the principal.
According to Annie’s mother, this sincere father used to do simultaneous interpretation. In short, he was also a professional polyglot. Of course, he still did not receive as much applause as Chu Xiaoxiao. After all, he still spoke fewer languages.
Chu Xiaoyi witnessed his sister’s amazing performance at the ceremony and felt that he had deeply misunderstood her.
Could it be that this Peppa Pig scholar was a hidden genius?
Actually, Xiao Bi told her eldest son that her younger daughter was extremely talented in language. But she had always been an introverted and humble person and did not like to speak too much, so Chu Xiaoyi did not clearly understand the true meaning.
Chu Xiaoyi heard his parents’ efforts and was convinced that it was they who created the language environment for Chu Xiaoxiao. But her ability to learn was solely due to her strength.
Their family was different from Annie’s mother’s and others. In order for Annie’s mother to learn Spanish, she makes a plan to learn the language by herself first, then practice with Annie in order to let the children have an interactive learning environment.
Yahan’s father can’t learn a foreign language by himself, so he would ask a foreign language teacher to accompany Yahan to practice one-on-one. But this choice was obviously far less effective than the previous ones.
Parents at this kindergarten studied a variety of curricula, chose the best goals for their children, and also take them to travel around the world, both to learn and to broaden their horizons.
Just like Yahan’s father, they have long been preoccupied with finding suitable summer camps so that their children can be prepared early before attending Ivy League schools in the future.
Chu Xiaoyi was by no means a “qualified” parent compared to them. But the funny thing is, relying on the popularity of his sister due to her exemplary performance, his parents’ attention was attracted as they asked him about his teaching experience.
