Chapter 27.1
Chapter 27.1
Chu Xiaoxiao put in quite a bit of effort to choose what to study for the tutoring classes. She researched on her own for a while to determine her interests.
Xiao Bi looked concerned and helplessly said, “Is Chu Xiaoxiao suitable for taking classes?”
Yang Yin would probably choose high school courses, which were large-group lectures. Chu Xiaoxiao definitely couldn’t attend those, and there was no need for her to take tutoring classes at this point. It would be better for her to take some interest-based classes.
Chu Xiaoyi nonchalantly remarked, “What’s suitable or not? She can choose the interest-based classes she likes. Nowadays, many kids take art and singing classes on weekends.”
Chu Xiaoyi had also taken interest-based classes before and thought they were meant to cultivate hobbies and refine one’s character, which wasn’t meant to force his sister to become an artist.
After much consideration, Chu Xiaoxiao exclaimed, “I’ve made my choice!”
Chu Xiaoyi responded, “Alright, I’ll enroll you in the class. Also, I should get going to work.”
This time he had come to talk to his parents about the filming project. He guessed that they would have to start recording at home next week, so he wanted to ensure they were all on the same page regarding the time.
Chu Xiaoyi originally thought his little sister might choose to do something fun and cute, but her choice was quite specialized.
Chu Xiaoxiao said loudly, “I want to learn Latin!”
“?”
Chu Xiaoxiao continued, “Although Greek is an option too, I’d rather learn Latin…”
Chu Xiaoyi facepalmed, “Do you still want to learn languages? Can’t you do that at home?”
Chu Xiaoyi felt that his sister had a strong affinity for languages.
Was she planning to become a linguist when she grew up?
Since she could learn languages by imitating videos at home, why did she need to take classes?
Chu Xiaoxiao gave him a dissatisfied glance and confidently said, “Latin doesn’t have cartoons, how can I learn it on my own?”
??? You’re learning languages through cartoons?
Chu Xiaoxiao’s foreign language learning mainly relied on imitating pronunciation. She could mimic videos perfectly, and with further expansion of vocabulary and grammar, she could use the language effectively in various contexts.
When she accumulated enough languages, learning a new one wouldn’t be difficult anymore, especially since many foreign languages share common features in their grammar.
However, Latin couldn’t be learned this way. It has evolved into languages like Italian, Spanish, and French in different regions. While Latin couldn’t be considered completely dead, it had certainly transformed in its transmission.
Very few people used Latin now, and it was mostly used for translating documents. Chu Xiaoxiao couldn’t find interesting videos to learn from.
Although Chu Xiaoyi thought that even a Latin teacher wouldn’t teach her through cartoons, since she had a request, he had to comply and enroll her. The course institution even called Chu Xiaoyi to remind him that Latin had a certain level of difficulty and the class size for kids might be small, making it less suitable for children to learn.
Since the Latin teacher at the institution was a foreigner, they were concerned that kids might have difficulty understanding the teacher’s broken Chinese.
Chu Xiaoyi reassured them, “It’s okay, as long as the foreign teacher doesn’t use Latin to communicate with her, she should be able to understand.”
Unless the foreign teacher is an extraterrestrial, then it would indeed be beyond Chu Xiaoxiao’s language skills, and there’s nothing we can do about it.
After Chu Xiaoxiao and Yang Yin had selected their courses, they happily set off on a weekend morning with packed lunches, heading to the educational institution. They took a bus and took two or three stops together before they arrived at the building where the tutoring institution was located.
Since their classes were on different floors, Yang Yin dropped off Chu Xiaoxiao at her classroom first and entrusted her to the teacher before going downstairs to find her own class.
Yang Yin instructed, “Xiaoxiao, I’m in Room 5312. I’ll come find you at noon. Don’t wander off and get lost.”
Chu Xiaoxiao’s classroom was in Room 7005. Fortunately, her floor wasn’t very crowded, and with surveillance cameras, there shouldn’t be any issues. Yang Yin’s fifth-floor classroom had a lot more people, probably because many high school students were taking weekend classes, unlike the less common Latin class.
Chu Xiaoxiao nodded, said goodbye to her older sister, and entered the classroom with her backpack. She realized the truth behind her brother’s words that her class had a small number of kids. In fact, the Latin class was not just small; it was basically a one-on-one lesson with the foreign teacher.
The foreign teacher was a male teacher from Italy. He probably hadn’t anticipated that his only student would be so young, and he scratched his head embarrassedly while explaining, “Actually, there used to be more students in the class…”
Though the Latin class had always been sparsely attended, having just one student was indeed rare.
With only one student in the classroom, their class atmosphere was much more relaxed. Before long, they switched to communicating in Italian. During the break, the foreign teacher was concerned about the student’s young age and took her to the pantry to get some water.
The seventh-floor corridor was quiet, completely different from the bustling noise at the entrance of the building in the early morning, like a different world. Curiously, Chu Xiaoxiao asked, “Teacher, why is this floor so empty?”
The male foreign teacher helped her get a cup of warm water and clumsily explained in Chinese, “There are people here. That side is the music room; you just can’t hear the sound.”
The Latin class was held in a regular classroom, but there were specially designed music rooms at the end of the corridor. The walls were soundproof, so no noise could be heard in the corridor.
As expected, a few doors of the music rooms were pushed open, and numerous noisy little kids popped out. It looked like they were on break.
