Chapter 1: The Gaze That Changed the Future
Chapter 1: The Gaze That Changed the Future
By the time Xiao Fen was 5 years old, he already knew that he could see things that others could not.
They were not things like UFOs or ghosts, but something grander, the World.
It was not a dream; while walking in Reality or spacing out, he could see different Otherworlds through his eyes. In those worlds, there were various forms of life. After some time, these things that could be called illusions would slowly disappear.
Seeing too many things that others could not see, and being unable to explain them to others, he could only deal with these anomalies alone. This situation happened repeatedly, eventually giving Xiao Fen a calmness and steadiness far beyond that of his peers.
On the day of Xiao Fen’s 18th birthday, he suddenly had a premonition that there might soon be an answer as to why those Otherworlds appeared in his eyes, and this answer might completely change his life.
On a certain day in July, the Gaokao results came out, and his classmates agreed to gather in the afternoon as a gift to bid farewell to their three years of high school life.
Xiao Fen left home early in the morning, planning to read in the library for a while, and then rush to the School in the afternoon. When he went out, the entire residential area was very noisy.
Just as Xiao Fen walked down the stairs, he suddenly felt something was wrong.
Before his eyes, this World suddenly underwent a completely different change. This new World completely surrounded Xiao Fen, seemingly within reach, rather than just appearing in his eyes as before—the scorching cement ground, the dazzling spots of light outside the tree shade, the bicycles parked by the flowerbed, and the monotonous, sharp chirping of cicadas—although the Real World was still plain and unremarkable, the World before his eyes presented a peculiar transparent phenomenon, as if two photos were overlaid together to wash out the colors on top. Outside this Real World, Xiao Fen saw a new World.
It was a dense Jungle; huge trees that Xiao Fen could not name pierced the sky. Although he was currently in the hallway on the fifth floor, he could still only see the thick trunks covered in scaly bark in the middle of these trees. Looking up, the crowns of the towering trees stretching upward almost completely covered the sky, and looking down, dense ferns and crisscrossing roots covered the ground in the Jungle.
Newborn green filled his eyes; the limited Space seemed to be squeezed and pressed by these revived plants. Even on exposed rocks, there was thick fresh green moss. Snake-like vines tangled with each other, crawling to occupy every inch of Space.
In the Jungle, the falling of a needle could be heard; the scenery before his eyes was like a static painting, but beneath the painting, the cruelest and most tragic life-and-death struggles of nature were being staged—natural selection, survival of the fittest.
However, within the vibrant and prosperous life force of the Jungle, there was another kind of lifeless, cold silence. These two feelings were opposing and contradictory, yet neither could cover the other.
The airtight Space, for a moment, even gave a viscous feeling because of this lush, palpitating green, just like some kind of thick jelly. Xiao Fen could not hear any sound in this World; the sound of wind or the cries of animals did not exist in this World.
Beneath the calm wind and waves, killing intent was hidden.
This translucent Jungle World completely overlapped with the Real World, not affecting each other, like two straight parallel lines, running independently in two different times and spaces.
But such a marvelous sight only made Xiao Fen slightly stunned for a moment.
As if it were nothing strange, he just glanced outside indifferently, then turned his head and continued downstairs along the stairs; if the heart does not move, one is not moved; if the heart moves, one suffers various harms.
Just as Xiao Fen thought he could continue to walk calmly until this Jungle World disappeared from his eyes, a sense of vibration suddenly began to appear in the Jungle World, accompanied by a series of huge sounds of crashing against the ground.
That terrible sense of vibration seemed to be able to spread from the Jungle World to the Real World; Xiao Fen even vaguely heard the glass of several nearby households rattling.
That was some kind of terrifying Monster, powerful enough to change the quiet scene of this Jungle World.
Xiao Fen did not look back; the analysis was already in his mind.
The sound came so fast, in the blink of an eye, it was behind Xiao Fen. Just at this moment, Xiao Fen just walked down a flight of stairs, began to change direction, and happened to look up.
A prehistoric beast that should be called a Tyrannosaurus Rex was charging straight towards Xiao Fen; those big trees covered in armor were nothing in front of this behemoth more than 10 meters high.
Under the impact of this beast, trees thicker than a person kept falling, like fragile reeds.
In an instant, the silent fighting situation in this Jungle World underwent a complete change. Xiao Fen could even vaguely hear some wind sounds, as if these trees were crying softly.
Such a beast was certainly terrible, but what surprised Xiao Fen was that on this beast, which was vaguely seen covered in heavy armor and therefore not afraid of any tree impact, there was actually a rider controlling this Tyrannosaurus Rex.
On its shoulder blade, the steel armor extended backward in a strange way, and on the back of the Tyrannosaurus Rex, it transformed into a basket-like device. The Human rider sat upright in it, holding a whip that seemed to emit a strange light, shouting loudly at the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
But Xiao Fen clearly heard that the voice should be a very young woman.
This voice sounded very pleasant, completely without the ferocity that should be there when scolding a Tyrannosaurus Rex, but obviously, the Tyrannosaurus Rex was very obedient to such scolding.
After almost every command issued by the woman, Xiao Fen could see the Tyrannosaurus Rex make a slight correction in its posture or running trajectory.
Such a scene was very spectacular, but it had nothing to do with Xiao Fen.
Xiao Fen, who had made such a judgment and decision from the beginning, pouted slightly and quietly continued to walk downstairs.
At the same time, that strong and fierce Tyrannosaurus Rex had penetrated several large buildings of the Real World, and without causing any impact on the Real World, began to charge straight towards Xiao Fen.
Xiao Fen was not as bold and calm as he imagined.
Facing such a terrible and huge creature, even standing at a considerable distance from the Tyrannosaurus Rex, he could vaguely smell the thick smell of blood wafting from the Tyrannosaurus Rex’s mouth. All this made Xiao Fen feel a little fearful.
Finally, he subconsciously moved a little to the left, just brushing past the body of the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
That was a real brush past; Xiao Fen, who was now on the 3rd floor, had an actual height in the Jungle World exactly at the position of the Tyrannosaurus Rex’s shoulder. The Tyrannosaurus Rex, not noticing Xiao Fen, ran past Xiao Fen wrapped in the sound of wind, and the wind pressure brought from behind even made a part of Xiao Fen’s clothes rustle loudly.
Xiao Fen was slightly stunned, looked up, and just happened to see that female rider look over. The four eyes met, and then they separated instantly. Not long after, the Tyrannosaurus Rex ran very far away, and gradually no sound could be heard.
So beautiful!
This was the only thought in the mind of the eighteen-year-old boy.
Red hair that burned one’s vision, fair skin almost transparent, making one’s heart beat faster just by looking at it, eyes that seemed to see through one’s heart, and so on. Although Xiao Fen had other descriptions in his mind, these descriptions piled together, ultimately just became this one word at the moment: so beautiful.
The so-called stunning beauty is probably this feeling.
Xiao Fen thought so, then shook his head. No matter how beautiful the girl was, she was a person from another World, and had nothing to do with the Real World. This time they met, probably there would be no chance to meet again in the future; thinking wildly here was meaningless.
Strangely, not long after this female rider drove the Tyrannosaurus Rex away, the World before Xiao Fen’s eyes gradually returned to normal, the sense of transparency completely disappeared, and those Jungles were gone without a trace.
