Chapter 25: The Villain Senior Brother Turns Dark, the Crazy Junior Brother Pretends to Be Blind [25]
"He even crawled his way into the demon realm."
717 hesitated, his feelings a tangled mess.
He'd figured that once Ye Beiyu crawled out, he'd either head back to the Spirit Mountain Sect or make for the Divine Sword Sect.
But here he was, all the way in the demon realm. The plot had completely jumped the tracks.
717 felt a bit torn about it.
But then again, it wasn't really their fault, was it? His Big Shot had been sticking to the villain script the whole time.
It was Ye Beiyu who'd started going off-script and wrecking the plot first!
If they failed the mission in this last world, they couldn't be blamed for that either, right?
Yeah, 717, seeing Ye Beiyu hiding his face and identity with some magical artifact and waltzing into demon territory, was already plotting out how to deal with the fallout if this world's mission failed.
If Ye Beiyu and Bai Yan got together, that'd be fine—that was the whole point of their new department, playing matchmaker for the protagonist and the villain.
In that case, the protagonist and villain wouldn't end up as enemies, no question.
Even if the protagonist's whole character fell apart, their mission would still be a success.
Too bad Bai Yan clearly wasn't into Ye Beiyu, and he hadn't expected those two to get together anyway.
Still, nailing the villain role wasn't a bad deal—they'd just get fewer reward points in the end.
But the current mess had 717 wondering if they'd fail the mission outright and get punished for it.
He filled Bai Yan in on Ye Beiyu sneaking into the demon realm in disguise and even sent him a snapshot of what he looked like now.
Bai Yan hadn't really given it much thought at first. After all, most of the demon realm was already in his pocket.
To him, Ye Beiyu walking right into his turf was a stroke of luck.
He'd even already dreamed up the perfect chain to lock down Ye Beiyu, the protagonist dripping with luck and destiny's glow.
But the next second, the image that flashed in his mind made him freeze.
Ye Beiyu had disguised himself as a demon beast—a fox spirit, no less.
Whether on purpose or by accident, the fox-spirit-disguised Ye Beiyu had landed right in his people's hands.
And from the looks of it, they were getting ready to hand Ye Beiyu over to him.
Fox spirits were the lowest of the low in the demon realm. Born gorgeous, but cultivating was a nightmare for them.
Only a rare few had real talent; most got caged by powerful demons for their looks.
Bai Yan squinted.
Ye Beiyu was locked in a carved wooden box decorated with epiphyllum blooms, wearing a flowing crimson robe, red silk ribbons tied around his wrists and ankles.
He looked out cold, curled up all obedient, fox ears drooping, fluffy tail draped over his waist—so docile it was almost unreal.
Seeing Ye Beiyu like that, even Bai Yan's eyes darkened without him meaning to.
He knew exactly how capable his men were.
Ye Beiyu had scored some lucky break by now; there was no way he was that weak. He must've let himself get caught on purpose.
But Ye Beiyu didn't get the demon realm, and he sure as hell didn't know the lay of the land here.
He'd probably just wanted to use those guys to sneak into the demon palace, not realizing they'd hand him right over to Bai Yan.
As Bai Yan mulled this over, he pulled himself together. Glancing down at the ointment he'd just mixed, he quietly got up and put things away.
He hadn't expected to run into Ye Beiyu again this fast. He'd need to get ready properly.
Thinking about the luck he'd siphoned off Ye Beiyu back then, a faint smile tugged at Bai Yan's lips, his eyes gleaming with something unreadable and a spark of anticipation.
Don't you dare disappoint me...
After his bath, Bai Yan wrapped himself in a crimson robe with dark patterns and gold embroidery, his long black hair still loose down his back as he stood. Just as he finished getting ready, a familiar voice came from outside the door.
"Your Highness, you in there?"
Bai Yan tilted his head—it was the guys who'd grabbed Ye Beiyu.
"Come in."
Bai Yan's voice was lazy as he casually swept his hair back.
The door behind him creaked open, then came the thud of something heavy hitting the floor.
Bai Yan looked up, eyes landing on the carved wooden box, then sweeping over the few people standing there all respectful.
They looked at him with sycophantic smiles. The guy in front cleared his throat and said:
"Your Highness, so here's the thing—today we..."
"Leave the thing here. If there's nothing else, scram."
Bai Yan's voice stayed cold, clearly not in the mood to chat.
"Yes, Your Highness."
They exchanged glances, faces flickering, but too scared to piss off Bai Yan, they said nothing—just bowed and backed out.
Once they were gone, Bai Yan raised a hand and threw up a barrier.
He'd been taking it easy the last couple days, and Ye Beiyu had just walked into his lap—how convenient.
Bai Yan's gaze was unreadable as he strolled to the wooden box, raised a hand, and flipped it open.
But what he saw made him narrow his eyes in surprise.
He'd expected to see what 717 had shown him—Ye Beiyu in fox-spirit disguise.
Instead, there was a pure white little fox curled up inside.
Bai Yan pressed his lips together. The thin chain coiled around his wrist was useless now.
If it'd been Ye Beiyu, he could've just tied him up right then and there.
But of all things, it had to be a little fox.
Bai Yan raised his hand and placed it on the little fox, stroking its fur with just the right amount of pressure. His gaze flickered as he silently asked 717,
[717, is this little fox Ye Beiyu?]
Or had Ye Beiyu snuck out while he wasn't looking...
[It's him! I've been keeping an eye on him the whole time! But I don't know why he turned into a real fox either.]
717 said, his tone unwavering.
Bai Yan raised an eyebrow at how serious he was but ultimately said nothing, and just scooped up the little fox.
He had to admit—even if Ye Beiyu in fox form didn't have that seductive look from earlier, he was really comfortable to hold.
Bai Yan's eyes narrowed slightly, and he couldn't resist rubbing the little fox's tail, which noticeably cheered him up.
He had no idea why Ye Beiyu had suddenly turned into a fox, but keeping him close was never a bad idea.
Meanwhile, Bai Yan's fingers toyed with the thin chain, still mulling over whether to slip it around the little fox's neck.
He completely missed that the little fox in his arms had cracked its eyes open...
