Chapter 33: The Villain Senior Brother Turns Dark, the Crazy Junior Brother Pretends to Be Blind [33]
Bai Yan originally planned to return to his quarters first, settle the little fox, and then deal with those two.
Perhaps the news of the Demon Sovereign summoning him yesterday had reached the ears of those two, for before he could go looking for them, they came to him instead.
Just as Bai Yan returned to his residence, a demon clansman quickly approached and spoke in a low voice:
"Young Lord, the First Prince and the Third Prince have arrived. I've arranged for them to wait in the side hall. Would you like to go see them now?"
Bai Yan raised an eyebrow slightly, his voice cool and languid as he said:
"Offer them some tea first. I'll be there shortly."
"Yes, my lord."
The man clasped his hands in a salute, then turned and left.
Bai Yan carried the little fox back to his bedchamber, but the little thing refused to leave his arms.
His two little paws clung tightly to Bai Yan's wrist, his tail coiled around as well, and no matter what he did, the little guy wouldn't let go.
Bai Yan felt helpless, gently poking the little fox with his fingertips, watching the little guy's comfortable and content expression with a soft smile.
"Be good. Once I've taken care of things, I'll be back to keep you company."
The little fox blinked up at him, still not letting go.
He raised a paw, as if asking Bai Yan to take him along.
After all, he had heard earlier too—Bai Yan was going to kill those two demon cultivators.
But they were demon princes after all—whether in talent, strength, cultivation, or magical treasures, they were top-tier.
Although he let Bai Yan do whatever he wanted, and even pushed him into the position of Demon Sovereign for his own selfish reasons, that didn't mean he was willing to see Bai Yan get hurt... not even the slightest risk of it.
He couldn't gauge the strength of those two, and the best solution he could think of was to tag along with Bai Yan.
If things really went sideways, he could always drop the act.
It was just that—he had finally gotten his senior brother to be so gentle with him, and he really couldn't stand to lose that.
These past two days, he'd willingly sunk into that tenderness, unable to pull himself out, wanting only to fall deeper.
The thought that if he revealed his identity, Bai Yan would look at him with that disgusted expression again, still stung.
Bai Yan didn't know what he was thinking. He simply couldn't resist the little fox clinging to him and acting spoiled like this.
He let out a soft sigh and ultimately didn't have the heart to leave him behind.
"Fine, you can come along."
The little fox's eyes lit up, and the next moment, Bai Yan lifted him up with both hands and pulled him close.
For a moment, it was hard to tell whose heartbeat was pounding wildly.
The little fox's eyes went wide, his entire body stiffening, frozen in place.
His senior brother! He actually—he—he!!
He actually made the first move and pressed against him! Rubbed his face on him!
The little fox was left dizzy by Bai Yan's sudden move, completely disoriented, the corners of his mouth about to split into a huge grin.
Bai Yan's rare show of affection really got to him, making him wish he could transform back into human form right now and lock his senior brother in his bedchamber
But the last shred of rationality held him back, and he barely managed to hold himself together.
Bai Yan narrowed his eyes and rubbed his face against the fur once more, inwardly marveling at how comfortable the little guy's fur really was.
So soft and fluffy. He loved it.
"Too bad it's a bit small. If it were bigger, that'd be better—probably even more comfortable..."
Bai Yan murmured softly to himself, totally oblivious that there was anything wrong with what he was saying.
The little fox fit perfectly in his arms right now, but if he were a bit larger, he'd probably be even better to cuddle with in bed.
Ye Beiyu, who had been over the moon just moments ago, narrowed his eyes at these words.
His senior brother actually thinks he's small... Would bigger really be more comfortable?
Ye Beiyu buried his head in the crook of Bai Yan's arm, pretending not to understand anything, but silently filed those words away in his heart.
Bai Yan eventually carried the little fox to the side hall. Seeing the two already waiting for him, he calmly walked over and sat down.
Before he could speak, the two of them couldn't wait any longer.
The First Prince, Mo Yu, set down his teacup and got straight to the point:
"A Yan, I heard Father summoned you a couple of days ago and put you in charge of handling the assassination attempt from last time?"
"That's right."
Bai Yan didn't beat around the bush either, settling his little fox on his lap and idly toying with the bell around its neck.
"So that's why you're here today?"
The Third Prince, Mo Qing, also spoke up with a smile: "A Yan, what are you talking about?"
"We're brothers—flesh and blood. Can't we just come to hang out with you?"
"Since Father has entrusted this matter to you, he naturally believes in your abilities, and we have no doubts either."
Mo Qing got up and walked over to him, pausing as his gaze landed on the little fox on his lap, then said thoughtfully:
"They say A Yan keeps a little fox—this must be it... If A Yan likes little things like this that can't shift into human form, I could have the fox clan send over a couple more."
Mo Qing was trying to get closer to Bai Yan.
As his words fell, the little fox that had been quietly lying on his lap pricked up his ears, waiting to hear Bai Yan's answer.
Ye Beiyu thought of how Bai Yan had treated him these past two days, feeling both nervous and expectant, while silently committing Mo Qing's face to memory.
In a corner where no one could see, he bared his teeth with a grin, a dark glint tinged with killing intent flashing through his eyes.
Trying to push other foxes on his senior brother—if his senior brother didn't deal with this demon today, he was going to go off and kill this bastard tonight anyway!
Mo Qing felt a sudden chill run down his spine, but he didn't give it much thought.
He wanted to say more, but Bai Yan simply ignored him and said flatly,
"No need. One fox is enough. I like this one; I don't need any others."
"Ah, alright."
Mo Qing rubbed the tip of his nose. Though he didn't press further, he went ahead and sat down next to Bai Yan.
Seeing how cold Bai Yan was being, he poured another cup of tea, toying with the cup as he said offhandedly,
"But that aside, Father's getting up there in years, and there's a lot he can't handle anymore."
"Since he's trusted you with something this important, A Yan, you better handle it right. Don't disappoint Father, my dear brother..."
Meanwhile, Mo Yu, sitting across from them, couldn't take it anymore.
Mo Yu gave Mo Qing a helpless look.
Then he walked up to Bai Yan and set a brocade box on the carved sandalwood table beside them.
Bai Yan stopped what he was doing, raising his eyes to Mo Yu, waiting for him to go on.
Mo Yu twirled his finger on the box, then tapped it, chuckling lightly,
"A Yan, aren't you going to open it? There's something inside you've always wanted."
Bai Yan still didn't move, but Mo Qing beside him looked like he couldn't wait, eyes sparkling as he laughed,
"I'll open it! I'll open it!"
And with that, he immediately opened the box in front of him.
Bai Yan finally looked over, and the second he saw what was inside, his brows knit and his face turned serious.
"This is..."
He raised his eyes. "Where'd you get this?"
In that instant, Bai Yan understood why these two had shown up so boldly, without a care in the world.
They hadn't even tried to hide it. They knew exactly why he was here, and they still acted like this.
So it was because they had this thing in their hands...
"This Moon Spirit Herb is a real treasure, you know. They say it can cure every poison in the world... including gu. My brother and I went through a lot to get it," Mo Qing said with a hint of awe, a flicker flashing through his eyes.
He turned to look at Bai Yan, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips and eyes.
"A Yan, my brother and I really do see you as our little brother, which is why we brought you this Moon Spirit Herb that only blooms once every thousand years."
"With this herb, the Twin Gu Worm inside you can be taken care of. Isn't that exactly why you came to the demon realm?"
Mo Qing kept smiling, but his eyes were colder than the snow on Tianshan, with a hint of frost in them.
Mo Yu spoke up too: "If I'm not wrong, Father doesn't have any proof that we did it."
"So he offered you this Moon Spirit Herb as a deal, hoping to use you to kill us for him."
"In that case, why not just make a deal with us instead?"
With that, Mo Yu slid the Moon Spirit Herb closer to Bai Yan and went on,
"As you can see, we're being sincere. The herb is in our hands, not his, so there's no way he can give it to you."
After saying that, Mo Yu went quiet, just watching Bai Yan calmly, waiting for his response.
Even so, neither he nor Mo Qing thought Bai Yan would turn them down.
Bai Yan stared at the Moon Spirit Herb in front of him, silent for a long time, as if really thinking over whether this deal was worth it.
He suddenly asked, "You say I should deal with you instead of him—so what exactly do you want me to do?"
"You brought out the Moon Spirit Herb; it can't just be to keep me from killing you, right?"
Bai Yan found it amusing. He hadn't been interested when the Demon Sovereign mentioned something that could fix his Twin Gu Worm, and he hadn't asked for details.
After all, he'd tried everything, and nothing had worked. How could the Demon Sovereign possibly come up with something useful?
But now these two had actually brought out the Moon Spirit Herb.
This was supposed to be for the protagonist, yet here it was, sitting in front of him—the villain.
Bai Yan's eyes darkened for a moment, his long lashes casting a shadow as they lowered, hiding the flicker of interest that rose in them.
Things were turning out more interesting than he'd expected...
It also made Bai Yan wonder what Mo Yu and the others wanted him to do.
"Haha, brother, I told you A Yan would agree, but you didn't believe me," Mo Qing laughed at Mo Yu, a hint of pride in his brows. He stifled his grin and chuckled, "Hehe, I won the bet. Don't forget to hand over your flute when we get back."
Then Mo Qing turned back to Bai Yan, catching his slightly confused look, and said,
"It's actually not a big deal—we just want you to do us a small favor..."
