Chapter 128: Shen Ke Gets Jealous

By the time Lin Jian crossed the street, police cars had already arrived one after another and cordoned off the area. He wasn’t in a hurry to get a hotel room, as a large crowd of onlookers had gathered. Although it was drizzling and well past midnight, it was summer in the south, meaning the nightlife was still in full swing. Naturally, quite a few people were crowded outside the police tape.

Lin Jian stood outside the cordon as well, taking a look at Xu Yunzong. The body was practically in pieces...

At that moment, his feelings were complicated. However, killers being killed was just the cycle of life. If Lin Jian hadn’t killed him, Xu Yunzong would have gladly returned the favor—all for the sake of nine million and getting into Master Jin Er’s good graces. So, there was no right or wrong—only winners and losers.

Lin Jian watched for a while. Just as he was about to head to the hotel in the building to book a room, a police car suddenly pulled up diagonally in front of him, and four officers hopped out. Lin Jian’s eyes lit up. Surprisingly, it was the long-legged Shen Ke. She had clearly spotted him first; that was why she had blocked his path with her car!

"Shen Ke!"

"Lin Jian, what are you doing here?" Shen Ke signaled her teammates to head to the scene while she eyed Lin Jian with suspicion. She wondered why he was here in the middle of the night, and whether he could be connected to the jumper.

"I’m here to book a room. I live across the street at Donghu Imperial Garden. It’s a new place. A few of my friends from Modu called me in the middle of the night, so I had to come out and get them a room!"

"You moved here?" Shen Ke teased with a sly smile. "Well, looks like we don’t live too far apart!"

"Oh? Where do you live? Which neighborhood?" Lin Jian asked, his eyes brightening.

"Heh, keep guessing. Though... these friends from Modu, they wouldn’t happen to be women, would they?" Shen Ke asked, a trace of wariness creeping into her voice.

Lin Jian nodded earnestly. "Three beauties with long legs, definitely on par with yours!"

"Hmph. Fine, go book your room. But be careful, our station might be doing surprise inspections tonight!" With that, Shen Ke pushed her way past the police tape in a huff.

Lin Jian watched her alluring figure walk away, feeling a sudden surge of heat in his chest. Not in a hurry to get a room anymore, he stepped back and stood behind the cordon once again.

Inside, the officers had begun their investigation—taking photos, cataloging the scene, and extracting items from the deceased. Lin Jian’s heart leaped into his throat. He worried that he might have accidentally left behind a stray hair or some dandruff. If the police managed to extract his DNA from the body, he would be screwed.

After watching for quite a while, it seemed the police had only checked the victim’s personal effects and hadn’t found any valuable clues. At the very least, it was currently impossible to determine whether it was a homicide or a suicide. A thorough investigation would be required.

A little while later, Shen Ke seemed to have finished her tasks. She walked back over to Lin Jian. "Weren’t you going to get a room with three women? Why are you still here?"

"Are you jealous, Shen Ke?" Lin Jian asked with a cheeky grin.

"Why on earth would I be jealous? Do we even have that kind of relationship?" Shen Ke scoffed coldly. "Get lost. You really came all the way over here just to gawk at a dead body? Are you sick in the head?"

"Well, you’re here, aren’t you? If you weren’t, I’d already be at the hotel!" Lin Jian pointed at the deceased. "What happened?"

"Fell from upstairs."

"A jumper, huh? He’s dressed pretty strangely!" Lin Jian noted with a puzzled expression.

"It’s traditional Hanfu clothing. It’s actually been quite popular the last few years." Shen Ke frowned. "Lin Jian, tell me the truth. What are you doing here? This is a crime scene. Loitering around a dead body in the middle of the night is highly suspicious!" It was her professional instinct kicking in.

"Damn, Shen Ke, you don’t actually suspect me, do you? I was just passing by. Isn’t your occupational hazard getting a bit out of hand?"

"Then why are you here? Are you really getting a room with someone?" Shen Ke asked doubtfully.

"Yep, really getting a room. Want to join? The four of us... wait, no, the five of us together?" Lin Jian smirked wickedly.

Shen Ke’s face instantly went ice-cold. "Lin Jian, I don’t appreciate those kinds of jokes!" With that, she turned on her heel and walked away.

At the same time, a deep sense of disappointment washed over her. It was entirely possible that he was actually here to book a room with other women. Given his half-joking demeanor, she genuinely couldn’t tell if he was lying or telling the truth. And what if it *was* true? Her emotions were a tangled mess, leaving her with an indescribable pang of sadness.

However, just as she greeted a few colleagues and got into her car, she cast an inadvertent glance in Lin Jian’s direction—only to see him waving at a Maybach! Shen Ke’s heart jumped into her throat. She stared intently at the luxury vehicle.

The Maybach pulled into a parking spot. After the engine cut off, two people stepped out from the back seats, one from each side. One was a middle-aged man in a traditional Tang suit, and the other was a greasy-looking uncle in a long robe. The driver who stepped out was a muscular guy sporting a topknot!

When she saw the three men shaking hands with Lin Jian, her aching heart suddenly felt much better. Her cheeks even flushed a light pink. "Useless idiot!" It was unclear whether she was scolding Lin Jian for being useless, or herself.

At that moment, after greeting the trio, Lin Jian started walking back toward her police car. Seeing him approach, Shen Ke felt completely mortified. She had lost her temper earlier for absolutely no reason! Lin Jian really had been waiting for people—not women, but friends from out of town. He was genuinely just getting them a hotel room!

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK.

Lin Jian tapped on her window. "Roll it down, hurry up and roll it down!"

"What is it? Keep your voice down!" Shen Ke hurriedly lowered the window.

"See that? My three best bros!" Lin Jian pointed at Chen Zhiyuan and the other two in the distance. Chen Zhiyuan and his companions even gave Lin Jian a polite nod.

Shen Ke’s face was thoroughly red, but she still stubbornly craned her neck. "What does that have to do with me!"

"Oh? I wonder who was just pouting with a face as long as a fiddle."

"Keep talking! Who told you to say you were getting a room with women..." Shen Ke paused, realizing she had just fallen right into Lin Jian’s trap. Her words completely exposed her inner thoughts and her feelings for him!

"Shen Ke, you just said your house is nearby. You have to tell me where it is right now, or I’m not leaving."

"What’s the use of knowing where I live? Are you actually brave enough to come over?" Shen Ke rolled her eyes.

"If you dare tell me, I dare go! I’ve got nowhere else to be tonight. I can’t go home because my mom is a light sleeper. So, Shen Ke, why don’t you take me in?"

"Heh, don’t you have your three best bros? Go drop the soap with them in the showers..."

"Damn." Lin Jian looked at Shen Ke in astonishment. "You actually know the soap-dropping joke?"

"I don’t know what you’re talking about. Hurry back, your friends are getting anxious waiting for you!" Shen Ke shooed him away.

"I’m not going unless you tell me where you live!"

"I... I’ll text the address to your phone in a bit, okay? Why are you being such a scoundrel? Hurry up and go, my colleagues are coming back!" Right on cue, her fellow officers started walking back toward the car.

"Then make sure you send that address ASAP, Shen Ke. I’ll sneak over in the middle of the night and we can wrestle or play poker..."

"In your dreams! You dirty-minded brat, get lost!" Shen Ke playfully kicked out at him from inside the car, and Lin Jian walked away with a wicked chuckle.
