Chapter 148: Meeting Shen Ke

Actually, Lin Jian had another reason for choosing to protect Shen Ke in secret—her team was simply too unreliable!

After all, Old Cat had already been caught, yet he managed to injure someone and escape right under their noses. This was human error. Furthermore, during the crematorium incident, if he hadn’t gone to her rescue, she would be pushing up daisies by now.

Therefore, these two consecutive incidents made it impossible for Lin Jian to trust Shen Ke and her comrades. Once might be an accident, and twice could be a coincidence, but every accident could be fatal. And he absolutely would not allow Shen Ke to come to any harm.

Since he had nothing else to do, he returned to the scene, walked back to Renhe District, and hid near Building Seven. But before he had been hiding for long, Shen Ke hurried downstairs with three team members.

"There’s a situation!"

Lin Jian immediately perked up. He didn’t follow Old Cat; instead, he chose to tail Shen Ke.

Shen Ke and the others got into two cars. Shen Ke’s car started but didn’t rush to leave. About five minutes later, she finally sped off.

Seeing her leave, Lin Jian rushed outside the district’s gates and hailed a cab to follow her. However, he soon realized something was wrong. Shen Ke’s car was heading straight for the outskirts of the city. Moreover, there were no other vehicles ahead of her. In other words, Shen Ke wasn’t tailing Old Cat. The other two were doing that, while she had chosen to head out of town!

About fifteen minutes later, Shen Ke’s car got off the national highway and turned onto a rural road. But once on the rural road, her car pulled over and stopped!

Lin Jian felt a bit helpless. It was obvious that Shen Ke had noticed the taxi tailing her. She stopped by the side of the rural road just to see if the taxi would follow! By the time he tried to stop the driver, the taxi had already turned onto the rural road.

"Are we still following?" the driver asked, looking at Lin Jian.

"No," Lin Jian said, not knowing whether to laugh or cry as he paid the fare and got out.

He knew that Shen Ke and her older team member in the car ahead were very tense right now. They had probably both drawn their guns and were waiting for the taxi to approach!

However, when Shen Ke saw who stepped out of the taxi, she was instantly dumbfounded and rubbed her eyes hard. She thought she was seeing things. She figured she must have been missing that little rascal so much over the past two days that she was projecting Lin Jian’s face onto a random stranger! But after rubbing her eyes, she realized that this person was indeed Lin Jian!

"Captain Shen, he’s coming. Be careful," the older team member said, even slowly flicking off the safety of his gun.

They were tracking a dangerous murderer, so they couldn’t afford to be the least bit careless!

"Wang, put your gun away. He’s one of us!" Shen Ke quickly signaled her partner to lower his weapon. She holstered her own gun and opened the door to step out.

"Shen Ke, it really is you!" Seeing her get out, Lin Jian pretended to be pleasantly surprised by a chance encounter and ran over excitedly.

Shen Ke crossed her arms and stared at him coldly. She thought, "Keep acting. Just keep acting! You followed me, and now you’re pretending this is a chance encounter? Do you really think I’m that easy to fool? Do you think I have no counter-reconnaissance awareness?"

Seeing her reaction, Lin Jian scratched his head. "Shen Ke, I was just worried about you, so I..."

"Impossible. My phone has been off for the past few days. How did you find me? Tell me the truth," Shen Ke said coldly.

"Alright!" Lin Jian took a deep breath, grabbed her by the arm, and pulled her behind the car. "Shen Ke, I’ve actually been investigating Old Cat too. Well, not personally, but a few of my friends came to Anxi and Lantian to help me find him.

"They found out he was in Building Nine of Renhe District!

"I came over this morning, walked around Building Nine, and staked it out. Then I saw you at noon..."

Shen Ke took it and carefully scrolled up and down. As she scrolled, her expression gradually softened. A moment later, she tossed the phone back to him. "Are you crazy? You had your people secretly look for a murderer? What if something happens to them?"
