Chapter 165: Something Happened to Zhang Weihong
Chapter 165: Something Happened to Zhang Weihong
Chen Zhiyuan and Xu Fengbin left, but Chen Dachun stayed behind.
Chen Zhiyuan was a formidable figure in Jiangnan Dao, but Chen Dachun was somewhat lacking; the kid’s IQ seemed to be offline. Naturally, "offline" here meant he wasn’t as slick and experienced as Chen Zhiyuan. In reality, Chen Dachun was a very smart guy whose brain worked just fine. This was because the guy knew how to bend his back, bow his head, and, above all, kiss up!
Therefore, in less than a day, he had seemingly replaced Qin San’Er’s current position, becoming Lin Jian’s dedicated lackey—the kind who would even follow him to the restroom.
Towards evening, Lin Jian had dinner with Chen Taohua and Fan Jingqiang. After the meal, they signed a new equity distribution agreement. He acquired forty-nine percent equity in Longfu Industrial’s overseas mining venture, but he also owed Fan Jingqiang 350 million. This money would be deducted from the mining profits! Anyway, without spending a single cent, he gained an additional thirty-five percent of the shares.
Actually, Lin Jian could tell that repaying him was only one reason for Fan Jingqiang and his wife; the other was that they were doing their utmost to win him over. Moreover, Fan Jingqiang and Chen Taohua had probably learned about what he did in Capital City!
This meeting took place in the same independent courtyard as before, but there was an extra person in the study. Aside from the man and woman from last time, there was also a middle-aged man at the Innate Ninth Grade. However, none of the three came out. Instead, they quietly eavesdropped on the conversation from the study.
Lin Jian did not point this out and pretended to be unaware of their presence. It wasn’t until the gathering happily concluded and he left that the three people in the study finally emerged.
"Third Uncle, what do you think?" Chen Taohua poured a cup of tea for the Innate Ninth Grade expert.
The Innate Ninth Grade man, addressed as Third Uncle, picked up the cup and downed it in one gulp. "What could I possibly tell just from listening? It’s not like I exchanged blows with him..." He spoke very quickly and with a heavy regional accent.
"You’d better drop the idea of exchanging blows with him!" Chen Taohua said with a straight face.
Third Uncle rolled his eyes. "I’m not that bored. He can kill a Grandmaster. I’d rather hide from him while I still can..."
"Alright, let’s go. We’re heading back!" Chen Taohua called out to Fan Jingqiang, then led the man and woman out of the independent courtyard.
After getting into the car, Chen Taohua said, "You should go abroad for a while too."
Fan Jingqiang was taken aback, then frowned. "It shouldn’t be a big problem, right?"
"This time is different. I’m afraid they’ll dig into our past," Chen Taohua said, shaking her head.
Fan Jingqiang thought for a moment. "I’ll listen to you!"
Chen Taohua was his wife. Although both were on their second marriage, Chen Taohua had been his Fuxing and his lucky general for all these years! It was precisely because of her that Longfu possessed its current strength. Furthermore, Chen Taohua had a background in law, so her perspective on issues and her analysis of the political landscape were often very sharp.
She felt a storm was coming. Although Longfu was on the right track, Fan Jingqiang still had a lot of dark history, and those secrets couldn’t withstand an investigation.
Fortunately, over the years, the couple had purchased real estate abroad. Going on a vacation and using his recent cerebral hemorrhage as an excuse to recuperate would leave no room for anyone to gossip! Once the storm passed, he could just come back and continue running his business.
"Take Third Uncle with you when you go!" Chen Taohua added.
Fan Jingqiang smiled and nodded. Third Uncle was Chen Taohua’s biological uncle, and the Chen family was actually an Ancient Martial Family. However, their family had a rule to pass down their techniques to sons but not daughters, so she wasn’t qualified to learn the Chen family’s Secret Technique.
Even though the Chen family had a Secret Technique, they hadn’t produced a Grandmaster in recent generations because resources were simply too hard to find.
Moreover, Chen Taohua’s family were genuine farmers. It was only in recent years, after she became successful, that she brought Third Uncle and two younger cousins to the big city.
After parting ways with Chen Taohua and Fan Jingqiang, Lin Jian went to the supermarket, bought some toys, and picked up some nutritional supplements.
It was the weekend again, and last week he had mentioned visiting Zhang Weihong and Dongfang Wan.
So, after making his purchases, he signaled Chen Dachun to drive. He took out his phone while opening a file folder.
This folder was given to him by Chen Taohua. It not only contained the equity agreement and his passport but also an overseas fax he received during the day. The fax contained some information regarding the Ye family.
While reviewing the documents, he called Dongfang Wan.
The phone rang three times before it was answered. "Oh, it’s you. Is... is there something you need?"
Dongfang Wan’s voice was very hoarse and nasal, as if she had a cold or had been crying.
Lin Jian realized that his timing was terrible; Dongfang Wan and Zhang Weihong must have had a fight.
"Wan, are you... crying? Did you have a fight with Weihong?" Lin Jian asked, biting the bullet.
"SOB, SOB, SOB..."
It would have been fine if Lin Jian hadn’t brought it up, but at the mention of Zhang Weihong, Dongfang Wan began to weep uncontrollably.
Lin Jian’s head throbbed. It was highly inappropriate for her to cry her heart out to him over a marital spat, as it could easily lead to misunderstandings.
"Wan, how about I call Weihong? I’ll ask him out for a drink," Lin Jian said, preparing to hang up.
"It’s not what you think... Weihong, he... he..."
"Hmm?" Lin Jian raised an eyebrow.
At that moment, Dongfang Wan said sorrowfully, "Never mind, let’s not talk about it. If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up."
"Wan, don’t hang up just yet. What’s wrong? Did something happen to Weihong?" Lin Jian began to understand that this wasn’t a lover’s quarrel; something had actually happened to Zhang Weihong.
"I don’t know either. It’s just... he went on a mission and then lost contact. It was a very dangerous mission behind enemy lines!"
"GASP..."
Hearing Dongfang Wan’s words, Lin Jian drew a sharp breath of cold air.
"Wan, where do you live? I’m coming over right now," Lin Jian said directly.
"I..." Dongfang Wan hesitated for a moment before saying, "I’m over at Wulin Road..." She proceeded to give him the specific address.
Lin Jian was quite familiar with the Wulin Road area. When she finished giving the address, he was very surprised, because that was a residential area for high-ranking officials. He had heard that many provincial civil servants lived there.
"To Wulin Road," Lin Jian instructed Dachun.
Dachun had now become his full-time driver. Without a word, he turned the car around and drove towards Wulin Road.
"Later, call Qin San’Er, Hui, and Wang Qinglong. Tell them to go to Weimin Law Firm tomorrow and hand their ID cards to Lawyer Chen Taohua so they can get their passports processed as soon as possible," Lin Jian said.
"I need to get one too, right?" Dachun asked carefully.
"If you want to go out to sea with us, then get one."
"Okay, okay." Dachun nodded repeatedly. He didn’t have many friends, and the ones he did have were just fair-weather companions. Hanging out and building ties with Lin Jian and his group sounded like a lot of fun.
Half an hour later.
Lin Jian arrived at a residential compound. The security guard had already been notified, so after a brief registration, Lin Jian entered the premises. This was a compound for officials.
Dongfang Wan and Zhang Weihong’s cozy little home was right here; it was a place of their own.
When Lin Jian arrived at Dongfang Wan’s home, the nanny from before, as well as a teenage girl wearing an army-green shirt, were also there.
"Come in and have a seat," Dongfang Wan said. She looked extremely haggard and lacked any hint of a smile. The atmosphere in the house was incredibly oppressive.
The boy-girl twins were playing games in a small room. The girl in the army-green shirt poured Lin Jian a cup of tea and then retreated to her room.
"Thank you for coming to see me," Dongfang Wan said. What she desperately needed right now was someone to talk to, which was why she hadn’t rejected Lin Jian’s visit over the phone.
"Can you tell me exactly what happened? Let me see if I can help." The very reason Lin Jian came was that he intended to offer his assistance; otherwise, he wouldn’t have bothered.
