Chapter 182: I’m Here to Do Bad Things
Chapter 182: I’m Here to Do Bad Things
"Hello, hello, Mr. Lin. My name is Pete, Pete Wang!"
The airport guide was also a Chinese immigrant from the Continent, speaking with perfect enunciation. Lin Jian smiled and shook hands with Pete Wang. Pete Wang was tall and thin, sporting a faint stubble. He wore a neat suit jacket and European-style sneakers.
"Sorry for the trouble," Lin Jian said politely before leading Sha Shun and Dachun, who had come to pick him up, out of the airport.
Outside the airport, Pete Wang had brought a black stretch Lincoln. He understood the temperament and mindset of people from the Continent very well. This was because Chinese people who had just gone abroad practically never shook off their desire to show off. The folks back home had a very strong urge to compare themselves with others, always emphasizing face and grand extravagance in everything they did.
Pete Wang knew this perfectly well, so his company arranged the most expensive options possible. The hotel they checked into was one of the best in the area, and their room was actually a presidential suite.
Lin Jian didn’t say anything all the way to the presidential suite. Even though he didn’t have to spend a single penny on this trip to Migu Country—since Chen Taohua would settle the accounts with the company later—he still felt it was too extravagant, a complete waste of money.
"Mr. Lin, what are your plans next? I am at your service twenty-four hours a day." Pete Wang had clearly received a massive commission. He beamed with joy as he spoke, bowing and scraping in a way that made him look exactly like a total sycophant.
"I don’t need anything for now. I’m probably still jet-lagged, so let’s talk about it tomorrow. We’re going to rest first, alright?"
"Of course, of course! This is my phone number. I’m on call anytime you need me, anytime!" Pete Wang handed his business card to Lin Jian and backed out of the presidential suite.
As soon as Pete Wang left, Lin Jian took out his phone and dialed Chen Taohua’s number. "Taohua, cancel the arrangements here."
"Cancel them? What do you mean?" Chen Taohua asked in confusion.
"I mean I don’t need a guide, and I don’t need them to arrange my food and accommodation. I know people here."
"But..." Hearing that Lin Jian’s tone was off, Chen Taohua quickly asked, "Is there a problem with their service?"
"No problem with the service, it’s just a bit too expensive. They used a Lincoln for the airport pickup, booked the best hotel, and even got a presidential suite. I feel like this is just throwing money away."
"Just because of that?" Chen Taohua asked, her tone odd.
"I just think they might be scamming you. When it comes time to settle the bill, you’ll end up full of anger."
"Lin Jian, you need to change your mindset," Chen Taohua said, not knowing whether to laugh or cry. "Have you ever thought about your current net worth? With the wealth you have now, what’s wrong with riding in luxury cars, staying in luxury hotels, eating the best food, and using the best services?
"Besides, you don’t need to worry about them scamming me. I actually own shares in this company. Two of my former classmates from back home went abroad to study. Later on, when they ran out of funds, I lent money to the couple, which they converted into shares for me..."
"If that’s the case, then I really have to get them to pull out!" Lin Jian laughed, not waiting for Chen Taohua to finish. "I might do a few things that violate the laws of Migu Country, and I’m afraid I’ll drag this company down with me!"
Chen Taohua was speechless for a moment. She only knew that Lin Jian was going to Migu Country to handle some business, but she had no idea what that business was. Now that Lin Jian was blatantly telling her he was going to do bad things, she didn’t know what to say.
"Taohua, tell the reception company to withdraw. I’m hanging up!"
"Lin Jian, stay safe."
By the time Chen Taohua finished her sentence, Lin Jian had already hung up. He stood up and headed outside, with Sha Shun and Chen Dachun immediately following him. A moment later, the three of them went downstairs. Dachun hailed a taxi, and they all got in. Chen Dachun knew English because he had studied abroad. His half-baked English was just enough to hold a basic conversation with the locals.
Their destination was Chinatown.
San Francisco’s Chinatown was one of the most famous Chinatowns overseas. Because San Francisco had the largest population of Chinese people, it was also one of the largest Chinese communities. As early as the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, men with long braided queues had crossed the ocean to pan for gold here. Many movies had depicted this history. The Huang Feihong film series, for example, had scenes showcasing this exact era. Over time, as more and more Chinese people arrived, this massive community was formed. It could be said that living in Chinatown was no different from living back home. Even if you didn’t know a word of English, it wasn’t a problem at all.
While the taxi was on the road, Jiang Xue called.
"Lin Jian, why are you always out of the service area? Why is it so hard to get a hold of you?" Jiang Xue asked in exasperation.
"I was on a plane," Lin Jian said with a smile. "Do you need something?"
"Of course I do! I’m in San Francisco. Let’s talk in person."
"You’re in San Francisco too?" Lin Jian froze for a moment, then pondered briefly before saying, "We don’t need to meet just yet. I have a few things to take care of."
"What do you mean? Let me tell you, don’t get careless. Over here, just knowing martial arts isn’t—"
Before she could finish her sentence, Lin Jian hung up on her!
On the other end of the line, Jiang Xue listened to the busy tone, thinking for a moment that she had misheard. But a second later, she let out a hysterical scream.
