Chapter 202: It Doesn’t Work Anymore
"Laine, have Fenni read my mind," Lin Jian said.
"Okay." Laine immediately translated his request.
Fenni looked to be in her late thirties or early forties. She was out of shape, and her face was dotted with small freckles. Filled with immense anticipation and awe, she slowly unleashed her Mind Reading Technique on Lin Jian.
Lin Jian silently waited for a sensation, but... he felt absolutely nothing!
Fenni looked incredibly surprised. She said something to Laine and then continued to stare at Lin Jian. The entire process was silent. Mind Reading was intangible—it was a reading of thoughts or Spiritual Power.
After a short while, sweat began to bead on Fenni’s forehead. She tried two more times before finally speaking to Laine.
"Fenni says she can’t read your thoughts," Laine translated. "Her Mind Reading Technique doesn’t work on you!"
"Why is that?" Lin Jian asked, curious.
Laine said she didn’t know either.
Lin Jian thought for a moment. "Tell Fenni not to be nervous. Since she can’t read mine, have her read Dachun’s!"
"Ah? Read mine? I..." Dachun was momentarily bewildered, wondering what the hell this had to do with him.
Fenni immediately turned her gaze toward Dachun. Her eyes lit up, and then she glared at him furiously! She snapped something to Laine. Dachun, who understood English, hastily began explaining himself to Fenni in the same language.
Laine explained, "Fenni says she can read Dachun’s mind directly. He was thinking that she is ugly and smells bad..."
Lin Jian’s face darkened. He wondered why that bastard Dachun would think about something like that at a time like this. Wasn’t that just asking for a beating?
"Then read him!" Lin Jian pointed at Sha Shun.
Sha Shun sat up straight, full of curiosity.
Fenni began to use Mind Reading on Sha Shun, but her brows furrowed once more, and sweat reappeared on her forehead.
Sha Shun scratched his head. "Don’t make it too hard on her."
Fenni spoke to Laine, who translated, "Shun’s mind is very difficult to read, but not completely unreadable. Fenni says Shun is a little hungry."
Sha Shun gave a thumbs up. "Impressive!"
It was difficult to read, but not impossible. By this time, Fenni had turned pale. She pulled out a piece of candy and popped it into her mouth.
"Excessive exertion drops Fenni’s blood sugar, which can lead to a coma," Laine explained.
"Oh, tell her to give me her hand," Lin Jian said, reaching out.
Fenni immediately offered her hand to Lin Jian. He half-closed his eyes and circulated a Thought through her body. However, the Dao Tree didn’t react, Fenni didn’t twitch, and everything seemed perfectly normal! He tried two more times, only to find it still didn’t work. He scratched his head, wondering what was going on.
"What about the other two?" he asked, looking at Laine.
"I’ll call them back!" Laine quickly made a phone call.
At noon, the other two organizers returned to the bar with Thomas. They were a man and a woman. The man looked to be twenty-seven or twenty-eight, while the woman was around thirty. She was exceptionally beautiful, bearing a slight resemblance to Marilyn Monroe—elegant and possessing a refined temperament.
The two sat politely across from Lin Jian and introduced themselves. The man’s name was Daniel. His Superpower was the ability to hold his breath underwater for nearly half an hour. The woman’s name was Emily. She was a Mind Hypnotist.
In truth, Western names and Chinese names shared some similarities. For example, you would always hear people with the same given names, such as Michael, Jack, or Paul. This was just like how Chinese people with the surname Wang might be named Wang Degang, someone with the surname Guo might be named Guo Degang, and someone with the surname Liu might be named Liu Degang. The surnames could be different, but the given names were often the same. Therefore, there were plenty of people named Paul, Jack, and Michael abroad.
Lin Jian asked Emily to hypnotize him, but after ten minutes, her attempt ended in failure. Instead, Emily successfully hypnotized Dachun, who fell into such a deep sleep that he started drooling. Even Sha Shun got a bit drowsy; although the hypnosis wasn’t completely successful, he dozed off for a split second! This was similar to his experience with Fenni.
As for Daniel, Lin Jian didn’t think he was a Superpower User at all. His abilities might be extraordinary, but he wasn’t necessarily a true Superpower User. This was because his lungs were different from everyone else’s; they were swollen and significantly larger than a normal person’s.
Lin Jian asked about Daniel’s background in detail and became even more certain that Daniel might not be a Superpower User. Daniel had grown up by the sea as a fisherman. He had gone out to fish at sea since childhood, which had trained his lung capacity. It was common knowledge that a person’s lung capacity could be increased through training. There were plenty of special forces soldiers who could hold their breath underwater for six or seven minutes. In the Guinness World Records, there were also many people who could hold their breath for over twenty minutes. Thus, holding one’s breath for nearly half an hour, while extraordinary, didn’t necessarily make someone a Superpower User!
However, whether it was Daniel, Fenni, or Emily, Lin Jian couldn’t extract any energy from their bodies. The Dao Tree didn’t react at all! Lin Jian was completely baffled. For the moment, he simply couldn’t figure out the reason!
