Chapter 40: My Son Has Become Successful

Lin Jian’s heart hadn’t stopped pounding since he left the antique shop. It wasn’t until he arrived at the bank, deposited the eight-million-yuan check into his own account, and saw his name on the receipt that he finally realized this wasn’t a dream. It was real. Afterward, he sat on the steps outside the bank, staring at the text message on his phone over and over again.

It was a balance alert from his bank. He now had over 8.2 million yuan. With all those zeros at the end, it was safe to say he had practically become a multimillionaire overnight! It all came from a single Taobao run last night—just one item. If the incident of catching Old Cat hadn’t interrupted him, he probably would have snagged a couple more pieces, right? Just one item, and four thousand yuan had turned into eight million! Anyone’s heart would give out from the shock. This was even more badass than winning the lottery.

"Has my Luck been a little too good lately?" he muttered.

Lin Jian recalled his heaven-defying Luck over the past few days, and the source of all this incredible fortune seemed to trace back to Ye Ziqiu. That night, he had been running his book stall, and Ye Ziqiu had crouched right in front of him to read. Then, he caught a glimpse of her large, snowy-white cleavage and ended up with a bloody nose. After that, a thief smashed a brick over his head. But the blow somehow granted him Invisibility, unlocked his Thought, and gave him superhuman strength.

A Dao Tree and its fruit had appeared in his mind. When he started his new job, he bumped into Ye Ziqiu again. Even while driving her car, he managed to do a heroic deed, which resulted in someone gifting him an apartment. And now, he had practically won an eight-million-yuan jackpot from an antique. All of this seemed inextricably linked to meeting Ye Ziqiu.

"Yes, yes, yes! That stunning beauty is my Fuxing, my God of Wealth!" he thought excitedly.

Lin Jian’s eyes lit up. He absolutely couldn’t quit his security guard job. No matter what, he had to stay by Ye Ziqiu’s side! As long as he stayed near her, the good Luck would keep rolling in.

"Oh, right. I need to go pay for the apartment in full. The workers are coming this afternoon to install the furniture, so I have to head back and wait."

Lin Jian immediately drove to Donghu Imperial Garden. He stopped by the sales office first to update the contract and pay the balance in full. Then, he bought an underground parking space before finally heading up to his new home.

It was on the fifteenth floor, offering a wide, unobstructed view. The apartment was eighty-five square meters, featuring a two-bedroom, two-bathroom layout. For some, this size and layout might feel a bit cramped, but since it was just him and his mother, over eighty square meters was more than enough.

After a busy afternoon waiting for the furniture to be installed, Lin Jian hurried non-stop to the Agricultural Bank. He arrived just as Lin Jing was getting off work.

"Mom, over here!"

Lin Jing usually took the bus home, so she was heading straight for the bus stop after leaving the bank when she heard Lin Jian calling out from behind her.

"Lin Jian?" Lin Jing turned around, extremely surprised to see him. Didn’t he have a shift today? Why was he at her workplace? She hurried over, worried that he might have gotten into trouble again. "Lin Jian, what are you doing here? Did something happen?" she asked anxiously.

"Mom, what could possibly happen to me? Just come with me!"

Lin Jian grabbed Lin Jing’s arm and practically half-carried her to the parking lot, opening the passenger door for her. He didn’t dare let her sit in the back. He hadn’t gotten the car washed yet, although the smell was completely gone.

"Whose car is this? You..." Lin Jing felt very uneasy. This was an Audi, wasn’t it? It looked like the exact same car her bank manager was chauffeured in.

"It belongs to the Young Master, my boss. I’ve been driving for the boss these past two days," Lin Jian said with a laugh. "Mom, I’m taking you somewhere."

"Where to? Are we eating out? That works. Let’s celebrate you getting a job. It’s on me—what do you want to eat?" Lin Jing asked with a smile.

"We’re not just celebrating my new job. I got a promotion today! I’m now the deputy head of security, just like Liu!"

"What? Deputy head? You’re at the same level as Liu now? Really?" Lin Jing asked, shocked.

"It’s true." Lin Jian quickly explained, "On my first day of work, the day before yesterday, I stopped a kidnapping. The boss saw my outstanding performance and promoted me."

"Was it Zhang Erjun?"

Lin Jing and Zhang Erjun lived in the same apartment building, so the news of what had happened to him had already spread throughout the neighborhood. Lin Jian didn’t find it inappropriate to talk about and simply nodded. "Erjun was just being stupid. Throwing his life away for a woman really isn’t worth it."

"Yeah, Erjun’s mom even came to our place the next day to thank me. She said if it hadn’t been for you, Erjun probably would have been shot dead. I don’t know who started the rumor, but people were saying snipers were already in position."

Lin Jian nodded. Under those circumstances, Zhang Erjun really could have caught a bullet.

"Huh? Lin Jian, why are you driving into this Imperial Garden District?" As they were talking, Lin Jian had already driven into the East Lake Imperial Garden District.

"Mom, I bought an apartment. Now, don’t panic, just hear me out." Fearing that Lin Jing would start worrying over every little thing, Lin Jian preempted her before she could speak. "Last night at dinner, remember that scammer call offering me an apartment? You heard it, right?"

"It couldn’t have been real, could it?" Lin Jing asked, astonished.

"It was real!" Lin Jian nodded. "Anyway, I saved two kids and a driver back then. Today, they went to my company to show their gratitude, and the company accepted the apartment on my behalf. If I didn’t take it, they were going to give me the equivalent in cash. I figured it was about time our family got a new place, so I..."

Lin Jing remained silent for a long time, her expression turning serious. In truth, she shared Lin Jian’s strong moral compass. She firmly believed that good deeds shouldn’t be done for the sake of reward, which made accepting an apartment feel wrong!

But then...

She saw Lin Jian looking at her with a longing, almost pleading gaze in his small eyes, and her heart suddenly softened. Her son was grown up. He was an adult now, and whatever he did or decided was his own business. He had done a good deed and received a well-deserved reward. There was nothing inherently wrong with that. He didn’t steal or rob, and on top of that, it promoted positive energy!

At that thought, Lin Jing suddenly opened her arms and pressed her cheek against Lin Jian’s. "I’m so proud of my son. Lin Jian, you’ve finally grown up!" As she spoke, tears unexpectedly streamed down her face.

"Mom!"

It had been years since Lin Jian last received his mother’s approval. In his distant memories, it seemed she had only ever been this gentle when he was in the first or second grade of elementary school. After that, she had only been strict, constantly frustrated by his failure to meet her expectations.

His eyes grew red as well. He patted her back and said, "Mom, I really have grown up. You don’t have to worry about me anymore, and you don’t need to spend your days anxious and afraid for my sake. I’m going to make money so you can live a comfortable life!"

"That’s my good boy. Take your mom upstairs to see the apartment!"

Lin Jing wiped away her tears. Mother and son exchanged a smile, then got out of the car and headed upstairs. Inside the apartment, when Lin Jing saw the new rooms and fresh furniture, she couldn’t stop touching and examining everything. When she noticed the two independent bathrooms, she was exceptionally thrilled. She preferred her own space and was even a bit of a neat freak, so having a separate bathroom suited her perfectly.

"It’s wonderful, but we’re missing curtains, pots, and bowls. We’re missing so many things! Mom needs to make a list!"

"Alright, you stay here and make your list while I order you some takeout. I still have to go out and grab dinner with my coworkers. It’s not that I don’t want to bring you along—it’s just with the guys from the security department. Since I got promoted, I promised to treat them to a big meal!"

"As you should, as you should. Hurry up and go, then. Once I finish the list, I’ll head back on my own!"

"No, no, you can’t go back by yourself. You have to wait for me to pick you up!" Lin Jian quickly added. "Mom, look, the new place hasn’t really been cleaned yet. I’ll order you some food, and after you eat, you can do some cleaning here. When I’m done with dinner, I’ll come pick you up and we can go back together!"

"That works too. Then I’ll just wait in our new home for my son to pick me up!" Lin Jing laughed joyfully.
