Chapter 63: Ambush

Half an hour later, Lin Jian walked out of Imperial Treasure Studio with Ye Ziqiu and Jiang Xue.

He didn’t sell the ginseng, nor did he sell the box. He had only come today to ask about the price. However, he hadn’t expected the Spirit Jade Pendant he was wearing to be so incredibly valuable. There was an entire market dedicated to collecting these kinds of Spiritual Jade Ornaments. That meant he wasn’t the only one in the world who could sense the Spiritual Qi on these antiques; others could feel it too.

"I’ve been a frog in a well," he thought. "It seems keeping a low profile is the best policy from now on."

Lin Jian had originally believed he was the only one in this world who could sense Spiritual Qi, but he no longer saw it that way. There were definitely formidable experts in this world whose abilities surpassed those of ordinary humans.

In the backseat of the G-Wagon, Ye Ziqiu and Jiang Xue remained silent. The two women simply hadn’t recovered from their shock yet. The lowly security guard driving in front of them casually wore a jade pendant worth fifty million. Just moments ago, Jiang Xue had even insulted him for being a country bumpkin. But comparing herself to him now, she was the one who looked like a bumpkin. Everything she was wearing combined didn’t even amount to fifty million!

"Lin Jian, the money you spent at the charity gala auction yesterday... you made that from selling antiques too, right?" Ye Ziqiu suddenly asked.

"Yeah, I like browsing the antique markets. I sold a few small trinkets a few days ago, so I have some savings on hand."

"So that’s how it is!"

It suddenly dawned on Ye Ziqiu. That explained how a lowly security guard like Lin Jian could afford to shell out two million for a ginseng root.

"Lin Jian, why don’t you sell me that jade pendant around your neck? How about I give you sixty-five million? That’s five million more than what Old Wang offered. Will you sell it?" Jiang Xue suddenly piped up, struck by inspiration.

"Not for sale," Lin Jian rejected her flat out.

"Tch... killjoy!" Jiang Xue rolled her eyes.

"Lin Jian, I’ll still buy that ginseng root from you at the price of two million. Please don’t sell it to anyone else, okay?" Ye Ziqiu chimed in again.

"Alright, I didn’t sell it precisely because I was saving it for you," Lin Jian said with a nod.

Ye Ziqiu nodded gently. The box alone was worth a million. Taking this back as a gift for her grandfather would give her immense face, so technically, she was the one taking advantage of Lin Jian. It was laughable that she had previously worried about him losing money. Thinking about it now, he probably knew exactly what he was doing when he won that bid.

After accompanying Ye Ziqiu and Jiang Xue for lunch, he drove them back to the villa. Afterward, he drove the Audi A6 back to the Agricultural Bank District. He had to go back and finish moving with Lin Jing. It had to be completed this afternoon. So, by the time he arrived, the moving company’s truck was already waiting for him downstairs.

Lin Jing had actually been packing for the past few days. The clothes were bagged up, and the pots and pans were boxed. They were leaving all the old furniture and appliances behind, so there weren’t many large items to move. Even so, moving was an incredibly tedious chore. It took them four to five grueling hours to finally finish. Plus, Lin Jing still had to slowly organize the new place.

"Mom, I won’t be coming home to sleep for the next few days."

Lin Jian and Lin Jing were having dinner together at a small restaurant just outside their new neighborhood.

"For one, I’m actually really busy now that I’ve been promoted to deputy supervisor. Secondly, the boss is going on a business trip and taking me along since I’m moonlighting as his driver."

Lin Jing wasn’t angry. Instead, she asked with a knowing smile, "Are you seeing someone?"

"Huh?" Lin Jian froze.

"Am I seeing someone?" he thought. "Sort of? Or maybe not?"

Still, Lin Jing’s intuition was incredibly sharp.

"I watched you grow up. Do you think I wouldn’t know if you were dating?" Lin Jing plucked a long strand of hair from his shoulder. "Besides, whose hair is this?"

Lin Jian opened his mouth to speak but stopped. "Her observation skills are way too terrifying," he thought.

"Well, I don’t object. You’re at the right age to start dating. Do you have enough money? I’ll transfer ten thousand to you."

"Mom, why are you suddenly so generous? Are you even my mother?" Lin Jian asked in disbelief.

"My son earned enough to buy us a whole new house," Lin Jing said proudly. "You’re sensible and all grown up now. If you’re getting a girlfriend, of course your mother is going to support you.

"As a guy, you need to buy her gifts frequently.

"You haven’t gotten your salary for this month yet, so you must be running low on cash, right?"

"I have money. The company gave me a bonus," Lin Jian muttered, looking down.

"Then I’ll give you five thousand. You can’t be stingy when it’s time to be generous, understand? Girls don’t like men who penny-pinch, but you can’t be too extravagant all the time either. You need to find the right balance."

"Mom, I get it," Lin Jian said, his head throbbing from the nagging.

"Alright, I’ll stop talking. To think you still know how to be shy!" Lin Jing laughed.

Lin Jian hurriedly wolfed down the rest of the rice in his bowl and stood up. "Mom, you get the bill! I’m taking off. I won’t be back for the next few days!"

"Drive safely! Don’t go too fast—" Lin Jing called out after him.

Before she could even finish her sentence, Lin Jian had already bolted. In truth, aside from his knack for getting into fights, she didn’t really need to worry about him. By the time Lin Jian was twelve or thirteen, he was already washing his own clothes, both outerwear and underwear. As a result, he was highly independent. Besides, he was a boy. As long as he wasn’t breaking the law while running wild outside, Lin Jing let him be.

After driving away, Lin Jian didn’t head straight back to the villa. Instead, he called Ye Ziqiu to ask if she had eaten and to exchange other pleasantries. Naturally, showing concern was only part of the reason; he also wanted to check if anything unusual had happened at the villa.

He was now fairly certain that the Su Family or that Master Si would likely use underworld methods to cause trouble for him. The fact that the police still hadn’t shown up meant the other party hadn’t reported him. For them to suffer such a massive loss and not call the cops clearly meant they had other plans. That was exactly why he had been in such a rush to move this afternoon. Once Lin Jing moved to the new place, she wouldn’t come back. Consequently, those guys who knew his home address would only be able to find his old apartment!

"Well, it’s dark now. I should go take a spin around the old place," he thought.

Lin Jian wanted to see if anyone was actually going to come looking for trouble.

At 7:50 PM, he parked downstairs at the Agricultural Bank District. Sitting in the car, he extended his Thought toward his old apartment. The rooms were completely empty. There was no one inside, nor was there anyone in the stairwell or outside.

Lin Jian let out a sigh of relief. It seemed no one had tracked him down yet. He started the car, preparing to turn around and leave!

However, just as the car was turning, he casually glanced up at the building across the street and abruptly hit the brakes!

He saw two people smoking!

But the location where they were smoking was all wrong—they were on the rooftop terrace of the opposite building. A man and a woman were sitting on the edge of the roof, their legs dangling over the side. They were incredibly bold; normally, only people looking to jump would dare sit like that. But it was obvious these two smokers had no intention of jumping.

The woman was heavily made up with a colorful, bird’s-nest-like hairstyle, and the massive, dark circles painted around her eyes made her look like a ghost. The man wore ear studs and a leather jacket.

Wearing a leather jacket on such a scorching hot day? Was he out of his mind?

But Lin Jian knew the man wasn’t crazy, because concealed inside that leather jacket were two blades—one on each side. Both were curved blades, similar to Mongolian skinning knives. As for the heavily made-up woman with the bird’s-nest hair, she actually had a flexible blade coiled around her waist! No, it was a flexible sword, just like the ones in the movies. Wrapped around her waist, it perfectly masqueraded as a belt.

Lin Jian took a deep breath. "Just who are these two?" he thought.

That rooftop directly overlooked the balcony of his old bedroom and the living room! If anyone went inside and turned on the lights, those on the opposite roof would have a crystal-clear view.

Evidently, they were here for him.
