Chapter 64: Flashing Swords and Gleaming Blades
Chapter 64: Flashing Swords and Gleaming Blades
It was unclear when it started, but Jiang City, after a half-month wait, finally saw rain. The weather forecast had been quite accurate—it predicted heavy rain for tonight, and indeed, it poured.
Lin Jian sat in his car, chain-smoking. He never stepped out, keeping his eyes fixed on the man and woman sitting on the rooftop. Naturally, he was also eavesdropping on their conversation. After a few moments, he gleaned from their exchange that they were coming for him tonight—and they were planning to "take him out."
That’s right, he had explicitly heard words like "take him out" and "bury him." Thanks to his Thought, he heard them loud and clear.
The duo had even casually discussed two different plans. The first was that, if everything went smoothly, they would stage a suicide by making Lin Jian jump from the very spot they were currently sitting. The second involved a graveyard in the suburbs where they had already dug a hole. If they couldn’t cleanly dispose of the scene here, they would silently bury Lin Jian in that grave.
Hearing this, a chill ran through Lin Jian’s entire body. The word "assassins" suddenly popped into his mind. Judging from their attire, they had to be professionals. They were here solely to kill him.
Although Lin Jian frequently got into street fights, he had never dared to actually take a life. But... they were going to kill him. What should he do? He sat in the car, lighting one cigarette after another, genuinely at a loss for how to handle the situation. He had initially assumed they were thugs sent by some enemy to beat him up or break his legs. But this enemy wanted his life! Who could it be? Master Si, Su Zhiwei, or perhaps Young Master Chen? Regardless of who it was, he had to make a choice tonight.
Assassins showing up at his door was no child’s play. It wouldn’t end with a simple scuffle and some traded insults. They had come fully intent on burying him; one wrong move, and he would be dead. It was a good thing he possessed his Thought and could overhear their conversation. Otherwise, if he underestimated them during a fight or held back, he wouldn’t even know how he died!
The heavy rain stopped and started in fits, but the man and woman remained motionless, letting the downpour drench them. However, the two on the rooftop could never have dreamed that their target was sitting in a car right below them, waiting for them in turn. It wasn’t until ten-thirty at night, when the rain temporarily ceased, that the pair finally stood up in unison and rapidly descended the exterior fire escape.
Upon reaching the ground, they slipped into an ordinary sedan. Clearly, they were freezing. Being battered by heavy rain while sitting still for so long was more than anyone could bear. Lin Jian remained still. The other car started its engine but didn’t move, merely blasting the heater. About five minutes later, the sedan finally shifted into gear and accelerated out of the residential complex. Lin Jian immediately followed.
Right at that moment, however, Lin Jian’s phone suddenly rang. It was Ye Ziqiu. It was already ten-thirty, and since Lin Jian still hadn’t returned, the beautiful woman was actually calling to hurry him along!
Lin Jian quickly answered and joked, "Old Ye, did you miss me?"
"Ahhh! And you said there was nothing between you two!" It sounded like Jiang Xue was also there, as she immediately started screaming upon hearing his words.
Ye Ziqiu sounded incredibly flustered and annoyed on the other end. "If you’re not coming back now, don’t bother coming back at all."
CLICK.
With that, she hung up.
Evidently, the two women had called together. Lin Jian’s joke had sent Jiang Xue into a frenzy and caused Ye Ziqiu to fly into a humiliated rage. Lin Jian shook his head with a smile, ignoring the incident as he slowly brought his car to a halt. The car ahead of him had pulled over, so he pulled over right behind it! The driver of the leading car seemed to realize something and suddenly sped up. Lin Jian immediately accelerated to keep pace.
In the leading car, Yanzi and Heizi’s faces were so dark and gloomy they could practically drip water. Actually, they were literally dripping water. Having been pelted by the rain for two or three hours, they were drenched like drowned rats, their body heat severely depleted. Yet, the target they had been waiting so bitterly for had been downstairs the entire time, watching them get soaked as if he were enjoying a circus act.
They had actually seen this Audi A6 pull into the complex a long time ago, but no one had gotten out. Later, the car had moved slightly before parking and remaining stationary. At the time, they assumed the heavy rain was keeping the driver trapped inside. Even later, when the rain stopped for a while, the driver still didn’t step out. And then, just after they returned to their own car, they felt something was off. There was something wrong with that A6. It seemed to be monitoring someone; otherwise, it was impossible for a driver to stay inside for that long without getting out.
Therefore, when they started their car and left the complex, the A6 unsurprisingly started up and followed them out. To confirm if the car was indeed trailing them, they had deliberately pulled over. And the trailing car had blatantly parked right behind them!
In that moment, Yanzi and Heizi completely understood. They had been exposed from the very beginning; they were the ones being counter-tracked. And they had sat foolishly on the rooftop all that time, letting the rain drench them. Their lips turned pale with fury. Furthermore, the driver in the trailing car was arrogant and gutsy, daring to openly announce that he was tailing them.
Yanzi took out her small corner-knife once again and began tending to her nails. Heizi, wearing his jacket, remained completely silent as he sped the car toward the suburbs.
Outside a suburban graveyard, Heizi brought the car to a stop. They had spotted this graveyard on their way to Jiang City. The road ended at rural farmlands, meaning it was purely an access road for the cemetery. On a rainy night like this, no cars would venture in. They had even dug a hole here during the day. And this hole was prepared specifically for Lin Jian.
The A6 behind them also stopped, and unexpectedly, Lin Jian was the first to step out! But by this point, he had already made his decision. Those destined for greatness could not be constrained by trivial hesitation. If he wavered now, the only thing he would forfeit was his own life. He was facing assassins who wanted him dead! Why should he hesitate when dealing with people who wanted to kill him? In this moment, he buried all his complicated thoughts and inner fears deep within his heart. His current objective: counter-kill!
After stepping out, he walked to the front of his car and leaned against the hood, smoking a cigarette to alleviate his extreme tension. The heavy rain fell in intermittent bursts. Lightning flashed and thunder rolled in the distance, while not a single soul could be seen on the pitch-black road.
Heizi pulled on a hat, and together with Yanzi, got out of the car. The two sides were separated by roughly twenty meters, with the headlights of both vehicles piercing the gloom. A light, sporadic drizzle fell from the sky. After pausing for a few seconds, Heizi stuffed his hands into his pockets, lowered his head, and began walking toward Lin Jian.
Then, Yanzi followed suit, taking measured steps forward. Her high heels were so tall that when she stepped into the puddles on the road, the water completely submerged her toes with their red-painted nails.
After covering about a dozen meters, Heizi suddenly accelerated into a sprint, his hands reaching toward his ribs. Lin Jian took one deep drag of his cigarette, flicked the butt away, and charged forward! Yanzi began to sprint as well. All three of them were rushing forward at the same time.
A flash of lightning!
A roar of thunder!
The glint of knives!
The flash of steel!
