Chapter 82: Hero Saves the Beauty
Chapter 82: Hero Saves the Beauty
The lights in the crematorium’s operating room refused to turn on, because whoever touched the light switch would let out a bloodcurdling scream!
Thus, the screams were incessant, yet the room remained pitch-black.
The tied-up Shen Ke had fallen to the floor, knocked over when someone overturned a mortuary cot in the chaos. She was absolutely terrified. Although she was an atheist, everything happening before her eyes defied all logic and science. She was now convinced that something unholy had entered the room.
However, the arrival of this unholy entity also presented a perfect opportunity to escape. She struggled to inch her way toward a corner of the incinerator. She intended to use the incinerator’s iron edge to saw through the ropes binding her wrists. Despite the horrifying situation, her will to survive was incredibly strong.
Gradually, just as she managed to reach the corner, the noises in the room abruptly ceased. The screams came to a sudden halt.
Shen Ke was so terrified that she didn’t even dare to breathe. The silence was simply too eerie.
Right at that moment, she suddenly felt someone scoop her up by the waist. She almost screamed in shock. Fortunately, she could feel that the person holding her was made of flesh and blood—a living human being.
While her entire body tensed up in bewilderment, a warm breath suddenly brushed against her ear, carrying the faint scent of tobacco.
"Shen Ke, Jiang City’s biggest smart-mouth is here to save you!"
"Uh..."
Hearing that voice, Shen Ke’s brain instantly short-circuited.
Lin Jian? Jiang City’s biggest smart-mouth? That was the nickname she had given him. The "smart" didn’t mean intelligent, but having a smart mouth. She was actually hearing Lin Jian’s voice at a time like this! She realized that this wasn’t some ghost; he was simply an Angel!
While she was still in a daze, Lin Jian carried her out of the operating room, and moments later, out of the crematorium building.
Lin Jian had already revealed himself the moment he picked her up. Although his Invisibility lasted for three minutes, he could toggle it on and off during that time as long as the total duration didn’t exceed the limit.
"Lin Jian, untie me, quickly." As soon as they were outside, Shen Ke snapped back to reality and hurriedly asked him to untie the ropes.
"Let me hold you a little longer," Lin Jian said shamelessly.
"Stop fooling around. I’ll let you hold me when we get back after closing the case. Untie me now, this case is too huge!" Shen Ke urged anxiously.
"You said it. I get to hold you when we get back." Grinning, Lin Jian untied her ropes.
"Quick, your phone," Shen Ke demanded.
Lin Jian handed it over. "Where’s yours? I just managed to get through to you earlier."
"Ah? That was you calling? They confiscated it while I was in the car."
Only then did Shen Ke realize that Lin Jian had been the one calling her earlier, which was how he had tracked her down. She quickly dialed a number and shouted, "Chief, get to the funeral parlor immediately! Not only are they trafficking organs, but they’re also committing murder!"
"Stay safe! We’re moving out now!"
The person on the other end seemed to have been waiting for her call. Before Shen Ke even hung up, Lin Jian could hear the WEE-WOO of police sirens blaring to life!
"Lin Jian, do you dare go back inside with me?" Shen Ke asked boldly.
"Shen Ke, I’m not going back in. There were twelve of them inside. Except for the one in the mailroom who ran away, I knocked the rest out cold. They won’t wake up for at least another ten minutes.
"Also, I chopped off a few hands with a knife. If I hadn’t, they would have started shooting blindly.
"And one more thing, Shen Ke. Could you not tell your precinct that I was here?"
Lin Jian added urgently, "I only came today because I heard you were in danger over the phone.
"Plus, with so many people injured, I’m worried I won’t be able to clear my name. So just pretend I was never here, okay? Nobody saw me anyway."
"Well..." Shen Ke wanted to refuse. If she didn’t mention Lin Jian, there was no way to explain what had happened.
On second thought, this case was extremely convoluted, and the true mastermind hadn’t even shown their face yet. Feng, the leader from earlier, had held off on acting because he was waiting for a phone call. Therefore, this was a massive crime syndicate. If she dragged Lin Jian into this, would his actions even be considered justifiable self-defense? Given how many people he had severely injured, it might not even count as self-defense, and he could be held jointly liable. If that happened, Lin Jian would inevitably face a lot of trouble.
"Fine, I won’t say you were here!" Shen Ke was a fiercely loyal woman. Having weighed the pros and cons, she decisively agreed to his request.
"You’re the best, Shen Ke!" Lin Jian gave her a thumbs-up.
Shen Ke looked up at him, then glared and ordered, "Lower your head."
"Huh? I didn’t say anything bad. I just said you’re the b—"
Lin Jian thought she was going to smack him on the head. However, as he instinctively lowered his head, Shen Ke suddenly grabbed him and planted a kiss on his cheek! The kiss lingered for three or four seconds before she finally pulled away!
Then she raised her leg and delivered a swift kick to Lin Jian. "Get out of here! Consider yourself lucky to steal my first kiss, you brat!"
With her face flushed crimson, she abruptly turned around. In truth, she knew exactly what she was doing. Tonight, after realizing she was in danger over the phone, Lin Jian had rushed over immediately. It showed just how loyal and dependable he was! And he had literally saved her life tonight! Thus, she had given him that kiss completely willingly. In her moment of despair, this man had descended like a deity from the heavens to save her. He was more than worthy of her kiss!
"I object!" Lin Jian suddenly sidled up next to her. "That doesn’t count, Shen Ke! A kiss on the cheek doesn’t count. It has to be on the lips!"
"Pushing your luck, are we? Get the hell out of here..."
Using her long legs, Shen Ke kicked and swatted Lin Jian until he scurried away. Moments later, Lin Jian vanished into the night!
At the same time, a fleet of police cruisers arrived at the scene.
Although Lin Jian didn’t know the exact details of the case, he figured it had to do with organ trafficking. The fact that this massive syndicate could freely use a funeral parlor’s crematorium meant they had friends in incredibly high places. He couldn’t help but feel a little worried about Shen Ke. Of all the professions a young woman could choose, being a violent crimes detective seemed far too reckless.
However, he remembered Shen Jun mentioning that everyone in the Shen Family—men and women alike—either joined the military or the police force. They originally came from the capital, only relocating to Jiang City after Shen Jun and Shen Ke’s father was transferred to Jiangnan Province.
At eleven o’clock that night, Lin Jian arrived at the Rejuvenation office building and called Ye Ziqiu. He actually felt quite embarrassed. He was truly a terrible chauffeur.
Fortunately, when Ye Ziqiu answered, she didn’t get angry, nor did she ask any questions. She simply said she would be right down.
A few minutes later, Ye Ziqiu walked out of the building. She didn’t look happy, but she didn’t look angry either. She calmly settled into the passenger seat.
Seeing her eerie composure, Lin Jian felt a pit form in his stomach. He hastily tried to explain, "P-President Ye, I..."
"Let’s just go home. It’s late," Ye Ziqiu said mildly.
"Right, going home." Lin Jian dropped the explanation and drove them back.
While Lin Jian and Ye Ziqiu were heading home, up in the presidential suite on the top floor of the Rejuvenation Hotel, the Young Master from Modu was holding a glass of red wine, listening to Rejuvenation’s security chief, Zhang Qiang, with keen interest.
On the coffee table in front of Zhang Qiang sat over a dozen stacks of crisp, hundred-yuan bills.
